MLB Managers Love Their Uniforms

A lot of people who don’t follow sports ask why baseball managers dress up in uniforms like the players. I’ve never really had an answer for it. I can see why 1st-base and 3rd-base coaches wear the uniforms, they are in the field of play and are more like players than the manager. The argument is that the manager has to come out on the field for pitching changes, double switches, and the occasional heated argument with the umpire.

I know I can’t imagine Pat Riley wearing a basketball uniform or Bill Belichick wearing football gear (He would like the lack of sleeve). I guess I’m just used to seeing overweight, old guys trot out in cleats and stirrups.I’m torn with what the MLB should do if they ever re-think the manager’s uniform. I know baseball tried to fine the Red Sox manager, Terry Francona, for not wearing a uniform under his pull-over. Could you imagine Sparky Anderson or Earl Weaver coming out to argue balls and strikes with the umpire and they were wearing a Pat Riley suit? That is the argument that I like to throw back at the nay-sayers. It is easier to switch rules in the NFL and NBA than in baseball. Baseball fans are purists, they hate anything new. I’m surprised that the DH rule has lasted as long as it had.

If baseball does change the rule, I would like the manager to be able to wear a retro-jersey of a Hall of Fame player from their team’s history. This would be fun to watch and tie in the game of the present with something great from the past. I think I would like to see Bobby Cox sporting a retro Warren Spahn jersey as he’s getting tossed from another game.

The Song Of The Day – The Urge (Brainless)

I was recently talking to a girl and she mentioned that she liked The Urge. It made me nostalgic, ’cause I used to listen to their albums all the time, plus it probably earned me some points be having a common interest. We all know that “America’s White Boy,” a.k.a. Sweetbob, likes racking up them points.

I used to be all about ska music. I still enjoy it, but I’m not exactly cranking it up these days. I still like Reel Big Fish, Mighty Might Bosstones, old Less Than Jake, and The Urge. The Urge came into the mainstream in 1995 and stuck around until 2001. They broke-up due to “musical differences,” which is code for “we didn’t sell enough records to tolerate being stuck in a van/bus with dudes anymore.” They had a sound that wasn’t 100% ska, they mixed in harder guitars that made them sound more like 311 at times.

The Urge’s best albums were “Receiving The Gift Of Flavor” and “Master Of Styles.” I tried to embed the video for “Jump Right In,” but unfortunately it didn’t work, but here is the video for “Brainless,” the video isn’t that creative, but the song is still a classic.

Kansas Proved Me Wrong

My bracket-skills need some work, I usually do pretty well in tournament pools, but this year was a bad year for your local area “White Boy.” I had UNC/UCLA in the final game with UCLA winning the dance. Even though I think that game would have been amazing, the Memphis/Kansas game didn’t disappoint at all. I watched a few games that Memphis and Kansas participated in this year and the games I watched, neither team impressed me. I saw Memphis lose to Tennessee and I barely paid attention to the Kansas games I watched ’cause I have never believed that Bill Self was that great of a coach. I’m no fool though, I’ve seen highlights almost daily of Brandon Rush or Mario Chalmers making some great plays on Sportscenter, but I have never given them much dap. The dap-o-meter reading was extremely high during the National Championship game. Especially after that amazing shot that Chalmers drained with guys in his grill.I have to confess that I wasn’t really into the National Championship game from the start. I don’t really have much love for either of the teams. My opinion on Memphis is that they are a bunch of thugs that will not end up with a diploma and Kansas play is more boring than entertained (most of the time). I was watched the game at the Winking Lizard tavern and I was just minding my own business and watching the game and talking to my friend, like a sane person. Anyways, there was a group of guys next to me that were really into the game, excuse me, REALLY into the game. I happened to be sitting next to the guy who was screaming directives and plays at the Kansas team, I believe this gentleman may have been what the experts call “drunk.” This made me start wanting Memphis to make this game into a blow-out, just to shut this guy up. They let me down, they actually made this game into one of the most entertaining Final Four games that I can remember. As we speak, John Caliperi is currently petitioning the league to ban the free-throw.

Do you think Chalmers and Rush will have decent NBA careers? I believe Chalmers plays a lot like Tayshaun Prince. He is long and has good range for a guy his size. He can also play defense, which is just a plus when you think about what he would bring offensively. The jury is still out on Rush. His brother Kareem Rush, was a great player at the University of Missouri, but hasn’t panned out as a pro. He is still in the NBA, but has been a bench player. I don’t like to compare siblings like that, but Kareem was a much better college player than Brandon. I hope the best for him.

Bronson Arroyo Loves His Beef

Since I now live in Ohio, I get to see plenty of Reds games (I wish the Cubs played them more.) Anyways, there are some hilarious commercials for J.T.M. Beef, a sponsor of the Reds games. It starts Chris Welsh, a former Reds player and current color commentator for some Reds games, and Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo plays guitar and sings a pretty intense jingle about beef. Anyone who watches these commercials needs to watch it until the end, Arroyo gives the camera a weird look at the end of each video. I need to find the JTM Taco Mix commercial, I just saw it today and it was hilarious.

Song Of The Day – Girl Talk (Smash Your Head)

Girl Talk, aka Greg Gillis, is a DJ/producer from Pennsylvania. His last album “Night Ripper” propelled him into the mainstream. His style is “mash-up,” but uses rock genres with hip-hop, which is different from most “mash-up” DJs. A rumor was that Kanye was stealing his style, but Kanye denied hearing of Girl Talk, even though they have opened up for West in the past.

Girl Talk has a new album coming out late spring/early summer this year and I’m sure you will hear more of him. “Smash Your Head” mashes a lot of your favorite tracks, especially known for his mixing of Biggie Smalls spitting over Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.”

Here is the video for “Smash Your Head.”

Eminem Will Start To Wear Royals Gear

The Kansas City Royals started off the season with the dubious task of trying to tame the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers are favored to win the World Series this year. They added a lot of offense to their already prolific line-up. The Royals are projected to be basement dwellers in the AL Central and possibly lose 100 games.

The Royals made the Tigers look horrible! Kansas City completed the sweep yesterday and surprised everyone. The Tigers couldn’t hit the ball, their pitching looked juvenile, and they looked completely lost on the diamond. I know the Achilles’ Heel of the Tigers is their relief pitching, but it appears to be ruptured. The Royals starting pitchers (Meche and Bannister) made Gary Sheffield and Magglio Ordonez look like….Royals! Alex Gordon was actually living up to the hype and looking like George Brett.I know it is really early to predict the Royals to have a decent season, but I think everyone could be wrong about the Tigers. I know they will score runs this season, but if they give up more than they score, you can’t win. The Tigers need to look to the clubs that have deep bullpens and offer up what’s left of their depleted farm system. The Tigers could end up struggling for the Wild Card in a very tough AL Central or staying home from the post-season and looking like kittens.Congratulations Kansas City, you actually made me stop and write a blog about the Royals. I’d be really surprised if I mention them again, but if they keep it up, I will gladly join Royals Nation. *Population is slightly less than Red Sox Nation* I would probably think it would be considered “Royals Town.”

Song Of The Day – Lil’ Wayne (Lollipop)

I’m not much of a hip-hop fan, but Lil’ Wayne is a little different. One of the first rap albums that I bought was Juvenile’s “400 Degreez.” After I listened to that album over and over again, I started to listen to more of the Cash Money Records roster. I liked B.G., Turk, Baby, Manny, and especially Lil’ Wayne. I know he was probably 15 at the time, but his lyrics weren’t “bubble gum” like a Lil’ Romeo or Bow Wow. Lil’ Wayne is the prince of keeping it real.

Lil’ Wayne kind of fell off when Cash Money was having problems selling records. Lil’ Wayne last album seemed to propel him to a superstar level, since he has been guest starring on more tracks than T-Pain.

Lil’ Wayne’s new album, “Tha Carter III,” looks like it should only build on his success so far. A few tracks have been leaked on the internet and “Lollipop” and “A Millie” are the first two singles set to be released. They both have great hooks and a hot beat.

America’s White Boy isn’t usually your #1 place for the hottest hip-hop, but Lil’ Wayne seems to have another winner.

Ohio State Wins Something

I’ve lived in Columbus, OH for a year and a half. In that time, Ohio State has been runner-up in nearly every major sport. The trend has been broken tonight, THE Ohio State University has themselves a championship! NIT Champions! Wait, what? Ohio State beat the University of Massachusetts in NYC for the NIT Tournament Championship. The students of OSU aren’t exactly turning over cars or setting dumpster fires.

I remember when Ohio State beat Michigan in football when Troy Smith was the QB and it was the #1 vs. #2 game to end the season. It was insane! I stayed in and watched the game with my roommates and then when Ohio State won, we went down on campus and it was complete chaos. I’ve never seen so many policeman on horses and crazy drunk Ohio State fans. Well, Ohio State went ahead and got creamed by Florida in the Championship game and then LSU the following year. They were also runner-ups in basketball and soccer, you can see that as a good year or a bad year, since they were so close.

I have received a lot of grief for not being an Ohio State fan. Just because a person moves to a town/state, doesn’t mean their allegiances change to their current location. America’s White Boy is no “front-runner.” I’ll be drinking RC Cola until I die, Pepsi and Coke can go to hell.

Song Of The Day – Eddie Money (Take Me Home Tonight)

I’ve always liked Eddie Money. When I was extremely young, my mom used to turn on MTV and leave me in front of the TV. She didn’t abandon me, she knew me too well, I would just sit there and not move. This was the mid-80s when MTV was nothing but music videos. Eddie Money’s videos were played a lot, usually at least one an hour. My favorite video was “Take Me Home Tonight.”

I don’t know why I thought Stevie Nicks was in this video, I think the girl who sings with Money sounds a lot like her. Nicks also had a lot of videos that ran on early MTV too, so I could have just crossed her up.

Anyways, the reason why Mr. Money has the “Song Of The Day” is due to MTV’s “Rock The Cradle. His daughter, Jesse Money, is a contestant on this “American Idol”-like singing competition. I wish I had a decent picture of her to post on here, but I couldn’t find anything. By this time next week, I’m sure you’ll see a lot more of Jesse Money on some blogs.

Hoosiers Love Tom Crean

The Indiana Hoosiers have named Tom Crean as the new head coach. Crean has coached Marquette University since 1999 and has been an assistant for many years. He was an assistant under Jud Heathcote and Tom Izzo at Michigan State, so he knows what to expect as a coach in the Big Ten.

I was born and raised in Indiana and I can’t say that I’ve been much of an IU fan. Kentucky has always been my team, but I respected the Bob Knight years and what they accomplished. My youngest memory of watching college basketball was when the Hoosiers won the 1987 NCAA tournament over Derrick Coleman and Syracuse. I’m not sure if IU can get back to what it was under Knight. I know Indiana is a breeding ground of some amazing talent like Greg Oden and future Tar Heels star, Tyler Zeller, but they never get the state’s best player. In recent years, teams like Ohio State or North Carolina have stolen away the Hoosiers base. I’m can’t say that it is impossible for Crean to win a few Big Ten championships, but I haven’t seen much from Crean’s teams since Dwayne Wade left Marquette. In years after Wade, Crean had Travis Diener and Steve Novak, who are both in the NBA, and did re-create the magic of his lone Final Four team.

Don’t expect Crean to turnaround IU right away. If Eric Gordon stays another year and they get Armon Bassett back, IU could be good enough to make the tourney. Those are big “ifs,” but Crean is what he is and that is a good recruiter, good coach, and squeaky clean violation record.

Penn State’s Finest

Stanley Pringle, a junior college transfer who is currently playing at Penn State, has been charged for masturbating in public. Not only is this embarrassing, hilarious for us, but it happened in a library! You can’t say that Penn State basketball players never hit the books. I can’t confirm that he was trying to hit the books, but he was a 40% 3-point shooter, I suspect the boy has good aim. I don’t think the librarian would have helped him with what he was doing. He allegedly started to masturbate while talking to a girl at the library. There was also an incident a few weeks ago about a guy following a girl to her dorm and a male masturbating in the stairwell. The man that was described could also be Pringle.

Someone needs to tell Pringle that he is no longer at Pasco-Hernando Community College. Pringle’s five-knuckle shuffle could lead to some good for Penn State. I mean, I forgot that Penn State even had a basketball team. The last decent basketball player to come out of Penn State was John Amaechi. He isn’t known so much for his basketball skills, but for being the first openly gay player in the NBA. At least we know Pringle likes the ladies…or just really likes books.

Song Of The Day – Gnarls Barkley (Just A Thought)

Gnarls Barkley came out of nowhere and had the “hit of the summer” a couple years ago. Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse, who started Gnarls Barkley as a one-shot deal, did a great job on “St. Elsewhere.”

Gnarls Barkley has just released their sophomore-effort with “The Odd Couple.” The album’s name is description of their partnership. Cee-Lo was best known as a soul singer with southern hip-hop connections and Danger Mouse was known on the internet for “mashing” Jay-Z’s “Black Album” and The Beatles “White Album,” thus creating the “Grey Album.”

Here is a track off of “St. Elsewhere”, here’s “Just A Thought.”
