My 2008 Fanstay Baseball Team

I joined a Fantasy Baseball league last season for the first time. I did okay, I finished around the middle of the pack. The season seemed like it lasted forever, but the daily task of adjusting your roster and setting your pitching staff, was enough to keep my interest. I had my draft last night, I’m content with my team, but I think I lack speed and batting average. I should be competitive though, but a lot of work has to be done.

Song Of The Day – Serj Tankian (Sky Is Over)

I have had the opportunity to talk with Serj Tankian on a couple of occasions. I had a music website for a few years and Serj was probably the most affluent speaker that I interviewed. He was so knowledgeable about world politics. He was very passionate about having the U.S. acknowledge the Armenian Genocide, in which a large number of people of Armenian descent were killed in Turkey around World War II. He lost people in his family and many of Armenians here in the U.S. do no know anyone in their family older than their own parents.

I admit that one of my interviews with Serj was never released online. I was so busy with college that I used one of the interviews strictly for a journalism assignment. I figured that I had connections and I wanted a good grade, so I called in a few favors and interviewed Serj for an assignment. He had a System Of A Down album set to release and was doing rounds of interviews. I ended up with an ‘A’ on the article, still not sure if my professor ended up buying System Of A Down – “Toxicity.” She should have, it was probably the best rock album released that year.

The song of the day is Serj Tankian’s “Sky Is Over.” The video is pretty cool, plus it has a political theme about everyday civilization being over as we know it.

NCAA Day 1 – Disappointment

After watching the first 16 games of the NCAA Tournament, I can say that my 4-year old niece could have picked these games. I’m pretty sure everyone would picked a “safe” bracket for the office pool can sleep well tonight. This doesn’t mean that you know more about the NCAAs than the next person, it just means that you lack balls.

I don’t have the biggest balls this year, I admit it. I have a few upsets (W. Kentucky, South Alabama) but nothing that I can brag about if they come true. I hope that something outstanding happens the next few days or I will never get throughMonday’s “Mike and Mike In The Morning.” I usually listen to every morning, but I find it hard to listen around this time of year. Mike Greenberg uses the word “chalk” constantly when referring to the NCAA Tournament. If you fill out a bracket and you have all the favored seeds winning, it’s considered “chalk.” I can’t honestly say why they refer to it as that, but I must have heard that word 100 times on friday. Both Mikes announced their bracket predictions and Mike Greenberg lacked any sort of round objects between his legs. He chose all four #1 seeds to make the Final Four. He defended himself by saying that he isn’t playing it safe by doing this, ’cause it has never happened. I can tell you right now, he isn’t the first person to predict that all #1s will make it, but he is probably the only MALE to ever public admit this.

I’m sorry Mike, you lost your “Man Card.” Please turn in your remote control and whatever you have left of your testicles, at the front door.

Beasley Holds The Mayo

The Kansas State/USC game was set to showcase two of the top freshmen in the country, O.J. Mayo and Michael Beasley. Mayo had a decent game and showed flashes of greatness, but Beasley and Bill Walker was a 2-man wrecking crew. USC made a run with about 10 minutes left in the game, but Beasley was cleaning the glass like he was a homeless guy at a stoplight.

Winning this game pretty much solidifies Beasley as the #1 pick in the draft. He was probably going to be first overall anyways, but winning a game on a national stage, like when he beat Kansas, doesn’t hurt his case. The Miami Heat is tanking games for a reason, if they match Dwayne Wade with him, they are back in the playoffs next season

Where Have All The Upsets Gone?

I know it’s still too early to predict the lack of upsets in this year’s NCAA tournament, but I’m doing it. I thought Georgia was going to beat Xavier earlier, but they ran out of gas in the second half. A lot of the “underdogs” are playing each other in the first round or possibly in the second round. I would have liked Butler, South Alabama, Gonzaga, and Davidson, but 2 of these teams will not survive the first game. The tournament committee would have never paired mid-majors against each other in the past. The success of Gonzaga and George Mason in past tournaments have made the committee start to respect mid-level conference teams. It would take a small conference team to shock everyone for there to be a cinderella team this year.

On a side, note, I would have really liked to have Indiana make a long run, since their 8th seed ranking is ridiculous. I know their coach was fired, but they didn’t lose any of their players. Too bad Indiana runs into North Carolina in the 2nd round. I guess nothing is impossible, but I can’t call Indiana a Cinderella team, they ended the season in the Top 25.

Song Of The Day – Cartel (I Will Hide Myself Away)

In hopes of incorporating sports, music, and pop culture into this blog, I will try and post a “Song Of The Day.” Cartel is band that was on the verge of being over-exposed with the horrible “Band In A Bubble” tv series on MTV. They recorded an album in 30 days in a bubble-like space in NYC. “I Will Hide Myself Away” is a song they recorded during that time. Their overall album sales haven’t been that stellar, despite the hype from the series. Danity Kane sold 250,000 copies this week from being on “Making The Band” and Cartel couldn’t get the MTV “bump.” The probably either need to add some hot girls or have Diddy keep repeating “No Bitchass-ness” on a track.

Terelle Pryor Picks The Buckeyes

I have lived in Columbus, OH for almost two years. Both years, OSU has played in the BCS Championship game, but they were smoked each year. They just landed the #1 QB recruit in Terrelle Pryor. He narrowed his choices down from OSU, Michigan, and Penn State. He is 6’6 and 225-235lbs, he reminds me of Vince Young, but appears to have a much bigger arm. I’m sure Coach Tressel will find ways to use him, but honestly would have probably been a better fit in Rich Rodriguez’s spread offense at Michigan. This should add more fuel to the fire between Ohio State and Michigan.

Whatever Happened To J.J. Redick?

I usually never compliment Duke, sorry Lake. I was raised a Kentucky basketball fan and ever since Laettner’s shot, I’ve wanted to drive to North Carolina and take a dump at half-court in Cameron Indoor. Anyways, J.J. Redick was probably one of the best college basketball players I’ve ever seen. He had one of the purest outside shots since Reggie Miller. I expected a lot from him when Orlando drafted him last year. I live in Ohio now and I don’t see a lot of Magic games, but I never see him on ESPN and he’s buried in the box score. Is he going to turn into a poor man’s Jason Kapono?

The Worst Free Throws You’ll Ever See

I remember Chuck Hayes when he played at Kentucky. He must have taken too many shots to the head since playing for the Houston Rockets. His free throw technique is worse than Charles Barkley’s golf swing.

Cheer Up Bluegrass State

Dear Kentucky Wildcat Fans,

You had a rough season and barely made the NCAA tournament. At least Ashley Judd still looks hot.
