No one expected Minnesota to be this good at the start of the season. Not only did they miss the NCAA Tournament and NIT last year, but they only won eight games. A college program doesn’t usually make this kind of turnaround unless they had a top recruiting class, which the Golden Gophers did not have.

Middle Tennessee dominated in Conference USA. They would have probably received an at-large bid if they failed to win the conference tournament.

Iowa State hung with some of the best teams in the country in the Big 12. They didn’t exactly stand out since Kansas and Baylor got all the press. The Cyclones will be a tough out in this tourney.

As a #12 seed, Nevada is automatically a popular upset pick. #5 seeds have fallen to a #12 seeds in bunches over the years. I’m not sure Nevada is in the same league as Iowa State, but anything is possible.

Notre Dame had a successful run in the ACC Tournament and probably should have received a #4 seed in the tourney. They are a dangerous #5 seed this year.

Princeton won the first-ever Ivy League conference tournament and went undefeated in conference play.

Ivy League teams are always trendy picks to upset teams in the first round. Many have had past success doing just that. The players go to Ivy League teams for a reason, they play smart basketball.

Creighton were among the cream of the crop in the Big East. The conference was better than expected and every team that made the NCAA Tournament out of the Big East deserved their bid.

Rhode Island didn’t want their fate to rest in the hands of the NCAA Tournament selection committee. They won the A-10 conference tournament and removed the ‘bubble team’ label.

Maryland is a star-driven team with Melo Trimble getting all the spotlight. They aren’t a very deep team, but you can’t argue with their record. They are a team you can’t take lightly.

Xavier looked like a possible top-four seed team until their start guard tore his ACL. The team is still stacked and the question is, which player will step up for them?

The Dayton Flyers have a nice seeding and an ideal placement with their early games being played in nearby Indianapolis. Archie Miller has lead Dayton deep in the NCAA Tournament in the past. Can he do it this year?

Wichita State got hosed by the selection committee. They are much better than their seeding suggests. This should be a fun game to watch.

The Michigan Wolverines had a scary airplane incident in Ypsilanti before the Big Ten conference tournament. They were all shook up and they thought about forfeiting and not participating. Well, they took a group vote, decided to play and they won the whole thing.

Oklahoma State’s head coach Brad Underwood took Stephen F. Austin to the NCAA Tournament the last three seasons. He lead the school to a nice Cinderella run and now he hopes to do the same with the Cowboys.

St. Mary’s may have been in the #1 seed discussion if they didn’t share the West Coast conference with Gonzaga. They dominated the rest of the conference, but just fell flat on their face when they faced the Zags.

VCU has made a name for themselves in the NCAA Tournament. Many young coaches have went on to find jobs at bigger programs after having tournament success with the Rams.

Many believe Arkansas didn’t perform up to their ability this season in the SEC. They still won 25 games, but they have so much talent on the team. They couldn’t gel together to beat the top teams in their conference.

A month ago, Seton Hall looked like they were NIT bound. They then went on a nice run and beat some of the best teams in the Big East.

Northwestern was an answer to a trivia question for a long time. Well, they are no longer applicable since they will finally make their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. It was the goal when they hired head coach Chris Collins in 2013.

There hasn’t been much buzz around Vanderbilt since everyone is talking about Northwestern’s first tourney bid. The Commodores have enough shooters on the team to make a run.

The Providence Friars are a team that many thought may not even sniff the NIT this season after losing two outstanding scorers to the NBA draft. They bounced back and snuck in the field via the play-in game.
