NHL Talk: Yakupov’s OT Goal, Jackie Moon & Logan Couture

Two hockey guys talking hockey

It’s hard to have a site called America’s White Boy without covering a sport where most players look like an average person in street clothes.

If this goes well, I may need to start a sister site, Canada’s White Boy. I would need a maple syrup sponsor or a lifetime supply of Tim Horton’s “Timbits”…so it probably won’t happen.

Joe Pasquali and Eddie Theisen are two diehard NHL fans. They both watch every hockey game every night (almost). Neither have a girlfriend. This is their email conversation the following morning. Continue reading

Dolphins trade CB Vontae Davis to Colts for Draft Picks

Crazy Jim Irsay wasn’t bluffing when he tweeted that the “trade winds were blowing” in Indianapolis.

Indy will send their 2013 second-round draft pick and a conditional late-round pick to Miami for former first-round draft pick CB Vontae Davis.

The Colts needed help in their secondary and if you watched one episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks”, you got the idea that Davis was on the trading block. Miami hasn’t been happy with his conditioning and that he takes plays off. Miami’s new head coach Joe Philbin has been getting on him a lot.

The Colts needed helped in their secondary, but their second-round pick will most likely be in the low-30’s. Davis has a couple years left on his deal, so he fits the mold with the Colts current youth movement.

Will he improve the Colts secondary? Yes.

Will he turn the Colts into a playoff team? Nope.

Red Sox-Dodgers Near Blockbuster Trade

In what could be the biggest trade this season, the Boston Red Sox are about to unload three of their biggest pieces to the Los Angeles Dodgers. According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, the deal would send Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to Los Angeles for James Loney, Jerry Sands, Ivan De Jesus and prospects Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster. Boston would also be kicking in money to complete the deal.

Los Angeles was awarded waiver claims for both Gonzalez and Beckett. Crawford and Punto previously went unclaimed and cleared waivers. Beckett has 10-and-5 rights, so he would have to grant permission to be traded. Crawford only has a partial no-trade clause.

The 2011 season has been a forgettable one in Boston. The turmoil that surrounded the 2010 squad that leaked to Terry Francona’s firing, has leaked into this season. To make matters worse in Boston, many players have had issues with new manager Bobby Valentine. Gonzalez was rumored to have sent a text to management wanting a meeting about Valentine. It was later said that former teammate Kelly Shopppach sent the text from Gonzo’s phone.

The Dodgers haven’t shied away from claiming big ticket players who were put on waivers after the non-waiver trade deadline. They claimed Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee earlier this month, but Philadelphia pulled him from waivers and no trade was made.

Los Angeles are neck and neck with the San Francisco Giants in the NL West race. They have new ownership and are able to open up the checkbook. The news owners want to make a splash and bring the Dodgers back to its past glory days under manager Tommy Lasorda.

Now, if only a team would claim John Lackey, Boston could start rebuilding the team from scratch.

UFC 151 is Cancelled, Who Will Jon Jones Fight at UFC 152?

This has to be the craziest day in UFC history and a fight didn’t even take place.

Dan Henderson, who was supposed to face Jon “Bones” Jones for the light heavyweight title at UFC 151, injured his knee and is unable to fight. UFC president Dana White scrambled to put a fight together and asked Chael Sonnen to fight Jones on short notice. He accepted, but Jones didn’t want to risk his title by only having eight days to prepare for Sonnen.

Sonnen used his mic skills and called Jones out, but Bones shrugged it off.

White cancelled UFC 151 due to a lack of a main event.

The next UFC pay-per-view will be UFC 152 on September 22nd in Toronto. Who will Jones fight at the event? We have the answer and it’s a strange trip.

After Jones refused to fight Sonnen, White decided to offer Lyoto Machida a title shot at UFC 152. He earned a title shot after beating Ryan Bader impressively just three weeks ago.

Machida’s people prematurely accepted the fight, but said they would have to run it by him. He was currently in a remote location in his native country of Brazil. It was hours until they were able to reach him, but he turned down the fight. He earned a title shot and I understand that he wouldn’t want to rush into it.

According to MMAFighting.com, Vitor Belfort will move back up to 205 pounds from middleweight to face Jones at UFC 152 in Toronto. He has been preparing for a bout against Alan Belcher for UFC 153 in Brazil. He will now step out of that fight and move up a weight class to compete for the light heavyweight title against Jones.

It has been a wild day. You should expect some more chatter from Sonnen to keep escalating from this incident. It will be interesting to see if it will turn into something big.

Lance Armstrong to lose seven ‘Tour de France’ titles

U.S. cyclist Lance Armstrong finally said “enough it enough”. He said that he will not fight the charges brought by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. The agency said that it will ban Armstrong from competition for life and strip him of the seven Tour de France titles he won. He won seven straight titles from 1999-2005.

Armstron, 40, had other countries bring up similar allegations of doping in the past, but nothing has ever stuck. His lawyers have threatened a lawsuit if the USADA proceeded. They argue that the agency must first resolve a disupte with the International Cycling Union.

Armstrong has never tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. He has used that defense from day one. His actions does not mean an admission of guilt. He noted that his choice of not fighting the USADA’s allegations was to focus on his Livestrong foundation for cancer survivors. Armstrong survived cancer himself before winning his soon-to-be-stripped seven Tour de France titles.

Tyrann Mathieu Enters Drug Rehab

Former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has checked into a Houston-area rehab center and will not attend college or play football this season. Mathieu’s father told WVUE-TV in New Orleans on Thursday.

Right Step center is where Mathieu will stay during his rebah. He is being mentored by former NBA player and coach John Lucas, who has success building character in young, troubled athletes.

Mathieu was kicked off LSU’s team last week for an alleged substance-abuse issue. He won the Bednarik Award as the best defensive player and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

If he sits this year out, he can play football next season or enter the 2013 NFL Draft.

2012 College Football Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Joe Pasquali, our resident college football analyst, is back again this year to cover NCAA college football. We will be unveiling his Big Ten team previews later this week, but to whet your appetite, here is his 2012 college football preview for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

The 2011 season was a frustrating one for the Irish, a year marred by turnovers, late game collapses, and inconsistent play on the offensive side of the football. Notre Dame ranked 118th (third from the bottom) in turnover margin last year, forcing 14 while turning the ball over 29 times. Many turnovers came in crucial points in the game or in the red zone (where ND finished 88th in efficiency), making it nearly impossible to win games. This year Notre Dame returns 15 starters and a wealth of experience on both sides of the ball, making them some people’s dark horse in 2012. Though picking the Irish for a rebound seems like the thing to do every summer, their schedule makes it impossible for me to do so. With no set quarterback and the loss of Michael Floyd you can chalk up losses to Michigan State, Michigan, USC and Oklahoma. Outside of that, they still play talented teams in Stanford, Miami (FL), and BYU. Oh, and don’t forget pesky little Purdue.

Offense (B)

Quarterback Tommy Rees decided to kick a cop and is serving a one game suspension for the Irish, though many people weren’t sure if he would have been the opening day starter anyways. Andrew Hendrix, Everett Golson, and Gunner Kiel are battling for the starting position and the current word is Golson has a head up on the others.  It’d be no surprise if we saw all four quarterbacks at some point this year; Brian Kelly has shown he has no qualms about switching QB’s, even mid game. Cierre Wood returns as the starting running back and impressed last year with 1,102 yards and 9 touchdowns. Tyler Eifert is an all-American and all around stud at tight end.  He should make the job for whoever is throwing the ball a bit easier, he is a huge target and has great hands.

Defense (A-)

The front seven of Notre Dame is very experienced and should improve on what was a decent year in 2011. All- American Manti Te’o leads a linebacker core that is as physical and good against the run as any in the country. The front three are back as well, and though a little thin, are very disruptive. The secondary could see a lot of rotation in 2012, especially at the corner position. Juniors Lo Wood and Bennett Jackson should step into the starting roles but if they can’t stop big plays on the outside Kelly will look to younger players. Breakout player to watch is freshman Aaron Lynch who should see some time at defensive end.

Special Teams (B)

Nick Tausch looks to have regained the kicking duties after not seeing any game action last season. He made 14 consecutive field goals as a freshman before his season ended early with an injury. Ben Turk enters his third season as punter for Notre Dame and has averaged 39.0 yards a punt in his career.

Coaching (B)

Brian Kelly has had success at every program he has coached, all the way from Grand Valley State to Cincinnati. Back to back 8-5 seasons doesn’t seem that bad, but it was the way Notre Dame lost games in 2011 that left fans with a bad taste in their mouth. Notre Dame at times looked rattled and without leadership, this starts at the top. Though the schedule is brutal, people have high expectations out of Notre Dame, even if those expectations are somewhat unrealistic. You hate to say it is a make or break year for Brian Kelly, but his predecessors didn’t get long to make an impact either.

Chad Johnson Arrested for Domestic Violence

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chad Johnson was arrested Saturday night for misdemeanor domestic battery, according to Davie Police Department captain Dale Engle.

The man formerly known as ‘Chad Ochocinco’ got in a heated argument with his newlywed wife and reality television star Evelyn Lozada of VH1’s “Basketball Wives”.

The altercation started in the couple’s car. They got into a heated argument and Johnson allegedly heatbutted Lozada. Johnson claims they just accidentally butted heads while arguing.

Lozada received medical attention for a laceration on her forehead…more information after the jump.

A new account of the altercation has come out. The alleged reason for the argument stems from a receipt Lozada found for condoms.

Johnson was taken to jail where he remains as of Saturday night. He is likely to remain in jail Saturday and be transferred to Broward Country. Johnson is expected to bound out of jail by 8:30 a.m. ET Sunday morning.

The Miami Dolphins tweeted an official statement, “We are aware of the situation & are in the process of gathering all the relevent information.”

If you watched HBO’s “Hard Knocks” this week, you will remember that at the 40:25 minute mark, Johnson predicts that he will be arrested during his free time. Here’s the entire first episode to scroll through.

[UPDATED] The Miami Dolphins released Chad Johnson today. Team employees were seen cleaning out his locker this afternoon.
