Song Of The Day – Von Iva (La La)

Von Iva is an all-girl new-wave/dance band from San Francisco, CA. The only reason that I heard of this group is the fact that they played a dump in Fort Wayne, IN called “The Brass Rail.” “The Rail” as it’s called, is a place where degenerates and “ligkids” call home. I call these people degenerates out of love, ’cause most of my friends go there often. Anyways, there is a local station that played the song “La La” on the radio every once in awhile. This all had taken place about 2 years ago, but the other day I turned on the radio station here in Columbus, OH and “La La” is on the radio here now. Von Iva is getting bigger and amassing a large fanbase. I think the song is pretty catchy and the ladies, who have a Bettie Page feel to them, are nice to look at.

I don’t know if they are on a label now, but I am guessing that some sort of label, indie or major, have courted them by now. I’m sure wherever you’re at, you will eventually hear this song on your local radio station.

Here is the video for “La La.”

Song Of The Day – The Classic Crime (Seattle)

The Classic Crime is a band that is signed on Tooth and Nail Records. I know this is at least the second band in the past month that we’ve featured on Tooth and Nail, we just think they have excellent taste.

The Classic Crime have a full-length LP and an acoustic EP released so far in their young career. The song “Seattle” is off of the acoustic EP. They are touring with Aiden this spring and then they are doing most of the Warped Tour this summer. Make sure to check them out on tour, I’m sure their sophomore LP will make them into household names.

Song Of The Day – Mayday Parade (When I Get Home You’re So Dead)

Mayday Parade has been touring non-stop over the last 2 years. If you like the pop-punk/emo genre, chances are this band has opened up for one of your favorite bands. They have been in Columbus at least 5 times over the past year. I have yet to see them and I regret it since tickets aren’t exactly going to break the bank.

I was a big fan of their EP and that’s how I first heard of them. They have released their debut full-length album about a year ago and they were also featured on the “Punk Goes Acoustic 2” compilation. Fearless Records, their record label, has been smart with all of the bands on their roster. They get them out there touring and feature them on their popular “Punk Goes” compilation series. Sugarcult and Plain White T’s are two bands that went on to do great things after signing with Fearless.

Song Of The Day – The Cliks (Oh Yeah)

I first heard of this band about this time last year. I heard their song “Oh Yeah,” on the radio and they even played here in Columbus. I almost went to the show for a few reasons. The first reason is that I liked the song I heard on the radio and the second was that it was only 5 dollars. I ended up having to work that night and couldn’t make the show. I am probably lucky that I didn’t attend the show ’cause my head would have probably exploded.

The Cliks are made up of lesbians and transgenders. I didn’t know this when I planned on going to the concert. I think I would have had a great time, but I think I would have just been confused the entire time. Everyone needs to remember that I come from a very small town in Indiana (red state), and even though I think of myself as a very open-minded person (democrat), I think it would have totally blown my mind. When I heard “Oh Yeah,” I thought it sounded like a very angry female. I didn’t know any of the biography. I’m not sure if the rest of their album is good, but this song keeps getting playing on my media player ever once in awhile.

The Song Of The Day – The Urge (Brainless)

I was recently talking to a girl and she mentioned that she liked The Urge. It made me nostalgic, ’cause I used to listen to their albums all the time, plus it probably earned me some points be having a common interest. We all know that “America’s White Boy,” a.k.a. Sweetbob, likes racking up them points.

I used to be all about ska music. I still enjoy it, but I’m not exactly cranking it up these days. I still like Reel Big Fish, Mighty Might Bosstones, old Less Than Jake, and The Urge. The Urge came into the mainstream in 1995 and stuck around until 2001. They broke-up due to “musical differences,” which is code for “we didn’t sell enough records to tolerate being stuck in a van/bus with dudes anymore.” They had a sound that wasn’t 100% ska, they mixed in harder guitars that made them sound more like 311 at times.

The Urge’s best albums were “Receiving The Gift Of Flavor” and “Master Of Styles.” I tried to embed the video for “Jump Right In,” but unfortunately it didn’t work, but here is the video for “Brainless,” the video isn’t that creative, but the song is still a classic.

Song Of The Day – Girl Talk (Smash Your Head)

Girl Talk, aka Greg Gillis, is a DJ/producer from Pennsylvania. His last album “Night Ripper” propelled him into the mainstream. His style is “mash-up,” but uses rock genres with hip-hop, which is different from most “mash-up” DJs. A rumor was that Kanye was stealing his style, but Kanye denied hearing of Girl Talk, even though they have opened up for West in the past.

Girl Talk has a new album coming out late spring/early summer this year and I’m sure you will hear more of him. “Smash Your Head” mashes a lot of your favorite tracks, especially known for his mixing of Biggie Smalls spitting over Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.”

Song Of The Day – Lil’ Wayne (Lollipop)

I’m not much of a hip-hop fan, but Lil’ Wayne is a little different. One of the first rap albums that I bought was Juvenile’s “400 Degreez.” After I listened to that album over and over again, I started to listen to more of the Cash Money Records roster. I liked B.G., Turk, Baby, Manny, and especially Lil’ Wayne. I know he was probably 15 at the time, but his lyrics weren’t “bubble gum” like a Lil’ Romeo or Bow Wow. Lil’ Wayne is the prince of keeping it real.

Lil’ Wayne kind of fell off when Cash Money was having problems selling records. Lil’ Wayne last album seemed to propel him to a superstar level, since he has been guest starring on more tracks than T-Pain.

Lil’ Wayne’s new album, “Tha Carter III,” looks like it should only build on his success so far. A few tracks have been leaked on the internet and “Lollipop” and “A Millie” are the first two singles set to be released. They both have great hooks and a hot beat.

America’s White Boy isn’t usually your #1 place for the hottest hip-hop, but Lil’ Wayne seems to have another winner.

Song Of The Day – Eddie Money (Take Me Home Tonight)

I’ve always liked Eddie Money. When I was extremely young, my mom used to turn on MTV and leave me in front of the TV. She didn’t abandon me, she knew me too well, I would just sit there and not move. This was the mid-80s when MTV was nothing but music videos. Eddie Money’s videos were played a lot, usually at least one an hour. My favorite video was “Take Me Home Tonight.”

I don’t know why I thought Stevie Nicks was in this video, I think the girl who sings with Money sounds a lot like her. Nicks also had a lot of videos that ran on early MTV too, so I could have just crossed her up.

Anyways, the reason why Mr. Money has the “Song Of The Day” is due to MTV’s “Rock The Cradle. His daughter, Jesse Money, is a contestant on this “American Idol”-like singing competition. I wish I had a decent picture of her to post on here, but I couldn’t find anything. By this time next week, I’m sure you’ll see a lot more of Jesse Money on some blogs.

Song Of The Day – Gnarls Barkley (Just A Thought)

Gnarls Barkley came out of nowhere and had the “hit of the summer” a couple years ago. Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse, who started Gnarls Barkley as a one-shot deal, did a great job on “St. Elsewhere.”

Gnarls Barkley has just released their sophomore-effort with “The Odd Couple.” The album’s name is description of their partnership. Cee-Lo was best known as a soul singer with southern hip-hop connections and Danger Mouse was known on the internet for “mashing” Jay-Z’s “Black Album” and The Beatles “White Album,” thus creating the “Grey Album.”

Here is a track off of “St. Elsewhere”, here’s “Just A Thought.”

Song Of The Day – Mae (Suspension)

I like to think that I had a little to do with Mae’s success. I know this can’t be farther from the truth, but after I saw them in concert, I told all my friends. I ended up interviewing the lead singer at a McDonald’s, which was across the street from the venue in Indianapolis. They opened up for The Starting Line, which was also very good.

Mae is a band from the Richmond, VA area. They released two albums on Tooth and Nail, which signs predominantly Christian rock acts. T&N doesn’t consider themselves as a Christian label, since they do sign bands that consider themselves as secular, like Mae and Emery. Their newest album, “Singularity,” was released on Capitol Records. It has a little different sound, more like Goo Goo Dolls than anything else.

Here is an oldie from Mae, “Suspension.”

Song Of The Day – Shiny Toy Guns (Rainy Monday)

I think that Shiny Toy Guns – “Rainy Monday” seems like a good choice for a very rainy Monday. Many of the Opening Day games so far have been delayed by rain. I think the Brewers/Cubs game should be a pretty good one. By the way, did anyone see the Nationals/Braves game last night? I was pretty impressed with the Nationals new ballpark, plus the walk-off in the bottom of the ninth is always a great way to start off a season and a new field.

Song Of The Day – Chris Cornell (Billie Jean)

American Idol’s David Cook just added some much needed juice to Chris Cornell’s solo career. Cornell’s solo album came out last year and it hasn’t sold very well. He was probably looking at a Soundgarden reunion tour, but Cook just sang Cornell’s version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” I know, it’s like a version of a version of a version, but the only thing that matters is that Cook did an amazing job. Cornell should profit from this ’cause his version of “Billie Jean” is on his new album, “Carry On.”

I know all the judges on American Idol praised Cook for his originality and for “going out on a limb,” but listen to Cornell’s version, it’s not any different. Cornell actually sings the song much better, but don’t tell the normal 13-18 year old female watching Mr. Cook on “Idol.”

Here is Cornell’s version.
