How Important Are Backup Quarterbacks in the NFL?

There are many factors why a team doesn’t put ‘backup quarterback’ high on their shopping list in the offseason or for the NFL Draft. Teams can be hamstrung by the salary cap, lack of quality draft picks and limited roster spots.

If you look at the 2017 NFL season so far, 14 teams have had to use their backup quarterback on at least one drive this season. Most of those were due to injury and Houston/Cleveland/San Francisco had to change quarterbacks due to ineffectiveness.

Injuries to starting quarterbacks have also wreaked havoc on NFL betting odds for the season. Just last week there were three games that had their betting lines delayed by days due to the questions about a quarterback’s health.

How much equity (roster spot, salary, high draft pick) should an NFL team use on a backup quarterback today?

2015 NFL Team Preview: Denver Broncos

funny weird 2015 Denver Broncos team season preview NFLThe Denver Broncos have been on a hot streak since signing Peyton Manning before the 2012 season. They are 38-10 with a Super Bowl appearance since luring him to the Rockies. I’m sure many Denver fans expected a Super Bowl win by now, but you can’t be too disappointed, can you?

I’m a life-long fan of the Indianapolis Colts. I understand some of their frustration with making the postseason every year, but often falling short of the main prize. Manning played for the Colts for 13 seasons and managed one Super Bowl win. He is proof that you can have the best quarterback in the league, but you need a complete team (and a little luck) to win the big one.

If Denver doesn’t win the Super Bowl this season, will Peyton’s tenure be viewed as a failure?

Here is the 2015 NFL team preview for the Denver Broncos.

Peyton Manning Ready to Play Another Season

Peyton Manning Denver Broncos neck will play in 2015 NFLEver since Peyton Manning had major neck surgery, he’s taken the offseason to figure out if he’s healthy enough for another season. He’s been checked out by doctors and it appears he’s ready to play another season for the Denver Broncos.

Fans were worried about Peyton’s health after he struggled with velocity late in the season. I even wondered if he had enough left in the tank. It turned out that he was dealing with a significant thigh injury.

Denver has other issues going into next season. Many of Peyton’s targets are now free agents. Can Denver afford to sign them all?

I Was Right – Peyton Manning Was Playing Injured

Peyton Manning sad quad injury denver broncos retires nflA few weeks ago, I wrote something about Peyton Manning. I pointed out that for the last month, Manning hasn’t been the same. I ascertained that he injured himself sometime after the San Diego game.

He has been listed on the Denver’s injury report as having a thigh injury, but only missed one practice. He suffered the injury against the St. Louis Rams. The injury report was pretty vague as it only listed Manning as having a ‘thigh injury.’

Well, it turns out Manning tore right quad and has been playing injured since. The Broncos have relied on running back C.J. Anderson more and more down the stretch.

Quad injuries can be quite painful. Quarterbacks with the injury get no power behind their throws. It explains why many have wondered what happened to Manning’s arm strength.

Is Peyton Manning Playing Injured?

Peyton Manning manningface Denver Broncos NFL slumping injuredThe Denver Broncos are limping into the postseason. It’s ballsy to say that since they are 4-1 in their last five games. I’m saying that because Peyton Manning doesn’t have the same kind of firepower in his arm he had last season. He has turned into a ‘hand-off first’ quarterback.

Since Denver’s 22-7 loss to St. Louis, Manning has only averaged 230 passing yards per game. He has thrown seven touchdowns and six interceptions during the five-game stretch.

After the loss to the Rams, Denver running back C.J. Anderson exploded with back-to-back 160+-yard rushing games, but has fell back down to Earth the last three games. He has averaged more than 25 carries per game in the same span.

Is Peyton Manning playing injured or are the Broncos saving him for the postseason?

2013 NFL Week 7 – Betting Picks Against Spread

Peyton-Manning-Andrew-LuckNeed betting advice for the NFL games this weekend? We pick every game against the spread in Week 7 of the NFL season.

Say goodbye to any value in the points spreads. The value is now in the decent teams with a bad record (Atlanta, NY Giants, Pittsburgh). Those plays are risky, but they’ll payoff this week. Keep those teams in mind in the coming weeks. You could hit on a few home underdog moneyline plays.

We pick every NFL game against the spread and throw out a few upsets in Week 7 of the NFL season.

Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 4

Peyton Manning Colin Kaepernick FantasyFantasy football reared her ugly head last weekend. You had some stars suffering bad fantasy weeks and some bench players coming up big.

The bye weeks begin this week with the Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers sitting this week out. Fantasy owners will need to replace Cam Newton, Aaron Rodgers, Reggie Cobb, Steve Smith, Jordy Nelson and James Jones in their lineups.

I hope I helped out fantasy owners last week. I had some good calls (Snelling, Moreno, Cameron), but missed on Pierre Garcon. I feel confident this week’s edition of Fantasy Football Start/Sit will help fantasy owners win in Week 4. Continue reading

Drew+Brees+Carlton+Fresh+Prince+FunnyIt’s never too early to pontificate and post preseason fantasy football rankings.

As you may know, the top of the rankings are full of the usual suspects (Brees, Brady, Manning), but a few new faces pop up at the tail end of our rankings.

Colin Kaepernick is a “sexy” name for fantasy football analysts this offseason, but will he succumb to the ‘Super Bowl Runner-Up Jinx’.

Here are our Top 25 quarterback rankings for the 2013 fantasy football season. Continue reading

Sweetbob’s Update from the Disabled List

I have been playing injured for the last few months. I’ve had neck issues that left me with a numb right arm and various other problems. I finally had surgery two weeks ago and I’m feeling a lot better.

Which surgery did I have, you ask? To put it in layman’s terms, I had the Peyton Manning special. I have two separate spinal fusions in the cervical area of my spine, a few discs removed, and they cleaned up a bunch of bone spurs that were causing pressure on my spinal cord.

I’ve had neck issues since high school and it was something that just progressively got worse. I am really curious and anxious of what I can accomplish with a neck that is near 100%. I hope to sign a multi-year contract to be the quarterback for the Denver Broncos.

I want to thank everyone for their kind messages…and all of your comments about my sweet “not a single f*ck given” beard.

Expect the usual snarky banter from me, since I hope to run a few gambling and fantasy football posts this week. Until then, check out another site that I help with, ProjectShanks.com.

2012 NFL Team Preview: Indianapolis Colts

What a difference a year makes. The Colts were expected to still be a playoff team in 2011, even with Peyton Manning missing a ‘few games.’ Well, he went on to miss the entire season, Indianapolis received nothing from the quarterback position and finished with a 2-14 record.

The Indianapolis Colts have many question marks going into the 2012 season. They are just at the beginning of the rebuilding process and fans will have to endure another bad season. Arguably, this season won’t hurt as bad since Kerry Collins won’t out there fumbling their happiness away.

There are a slew of new faces in Indianapolis this year. Forget about Luck, new head coach Chuck Pagano and new offensive coordinator Bruce Arians are the two new guys who will make the biggest impact in 2012.

Here is our 2012 NFL team preview for the Indianapolis Colts.

2011 Win/Loss Record: 2-14

Key Additions: QB Andrew Luck, RB Mewelde Moore, WR Donnie Avery, S Tom Zbikowski, C Samson Satele, DT Cory Redding, CB Justin King, C Mike McGlynn, DT Brandon McKinney, WR T.Y. Hilton, TE Colby Fleener, TE Dwayne Allen, DT Josh Chapman, OG Zane Taylor, RB Vick Ballard and WR LaVon Brazill.

Key Losses: QB Peyton Manning, RB Joseph Addai, LB Gary Brackett, S Melvin Bullitt, TE Dallas Clark, QB Kerry Collins, WR Pierre Garcon, WR Anthony Gonzalez, CB Jacob Lacey, WR Blair White, QB Dan Orlovsky, QB Curtis Painter, C Jeff Saturday, TE Jacob Tamme, LB Phillip Wheeler, DE Jamaal Anderson, OG Ryan Diem, DT Eric Foster, OG Mike Pollack, OG Jamey Richard, LB Ernie Sims and Brody Eldridge.

Non-Division Schedule: AFC East and NFC North

Fantasy Sleeper: RB Delone Carter – The starting running back job is up for grabs in Indianapolis. Joseph Addai is gone and they will need either Donald Brown, Vick Ballard or Delone Carter to shine during training camp. Brown is the front-runner for the job. If he gets it, Carter should get plenty of goal-line carries. He is currently the front-runner to be the third-down back. I almost picked Ballard for the sleeper, since he has the same build as Carter. If Carter is taken in your fantasy football draft, WR T.Y. Hilton is a nice deep sleeper. WR Donnie Avery is already banged up in training camp and he has left an opening for a receiver to shine.

Team Analysis: Just look at the list of guys who have arrived or left this organization in the last five months. It will take a few weeks just for these guys to know their teammates’ names. Andrew Luck will have a productive, yet humbling rookie season. He will not have Cam Newton’s numbers, but will end the season better than he was when he arrived at training camp. The receiving corps will help him out a lot. Just by having his old college teammate Colby Fleener out there will help Luck feel more comfortable. The running game was horrible last year and does not appear to be improved this season either. Donald Brown could go from ‘draft bust’ to ‘late bloomer’ with a good season. The Colts’ defense is a complete crapshoot. There are so many new faces and young players expected to contribute, they are bound to look bad at times. The coaches hope the learning curve is small for the young players and guys like Pat Angerer can keep improving. Indianapolis will be bad this season, but they will be watchable…something you could not say last season.
