How Important Are Backup Quarterbacks in the NFL?

There are many factors why a team doesn’t put ‘backup quarterback’ high on their shopping list in the offseason or for the NFL Draft. Teams can be hamstrung by the salary cap, lack of quality draft picks and limited roster spots.

If you look at the 2017 NFL season so far, 14 teams have had to use their backup quarterback on at least one drive this season. Most of those were due to injury and Houston/Cleveland/San Francisco had to change quarterbacks due to ineffectiveness.

Injuries to starting quarterbacks have also wreaked havoc on NFL betting odds for the season. Just last week there were three games that had their betting lines delayed by days due to the questions about a quarterback’s health.

How much equity (roster spot, salary, high draft pick) should an NFL team use on a backup quarterback today?

2016 Fantasy Football Rankings – Top 50 Quarterbacks

cam newton hat outfit clothes america's white boy top 50 fantasy quaterbacks nfl 2016People are starting to schedule banquet halls and/or reserve a larger orders of buffalo wings at your local bar in hopes of having the best fantasy football draft of all-time. Others opt to draft online and enjoy the festivities in their boxers.

Both are awesome, but I enjoy buffalo wings a little more than being anti-social.

The quarterback position is extremely deep in fantasy football this season. If you are in a ten-team league, I predict that every team could have a legit #1 quarterback. That hasn’t been the case in many years. There’s always a team or two that ends up with what should be a fantasy backup as their starting QB.

We rank the top 50 quarterbacks and split hairs when deciding spots 40 thru 50.

2015 NFL Team Preview: Green Bay Packers

green bay packers 2015 NFL team preview funny aaron rodgers mr rogers neighborhoodThe Green Bay Packers are a machine with Aaron Rodgers. They have won four-straight NFC North division titles and Rodgers is a perennial MVP candidate.

Green Bay was a touchdown shy of appearing in the Super Bowl last season. They bring nearly everyone back from that team. They also add B.J. Raji, who missed the entire 2014 season after tearing his biceps last preseason.

The Packers look like the table is set for them to have a monster season. Detroit and Minnesota will both battle for a playoff spot, but Green Bay is on a different level right now.

Here is the 2015 NFL team preview for the Green Bay Packers.

Suh Wins Appeal, Will Play on Sunday

Ndamukong Suh Detroit Lions suspended Detroit Lions funny NFL memeDetroit Lions defensive tackle (and celebrity diver) Ndamukong Suh won his appeal and will play in Sunday’s playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Suh had his one-game suspension overturned by appeals officer Ted Cottrell. It came one day after the league suspended him for stepping on Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

His teammate Dominic Raiola was suspended one week ago for stepping on Chicago Bears defensive tackle Ego Ferguson.

Let’s hope this squashes all the conspiracy theories that the NFL was stacking the deck for Dallas to advance. The NFL will get ratings no matter which team plays.

2013 NFL Week 15 – Betting Picks Against Spread

Calvin Johnson Snow Detroit Lions NFLI had a good week. I had some really nice hits on the marquee games and only had a few stumbles (NY Jets/Oakland). I now have a 107-74-10 record against the spread so far this season.

It’s a pretty poor slate of games this week. Many games pair two under-performing teams against each other. Last week could possibly be our final week with a full slate of competitive NFL football games. Teams will start benching players in favor of keeping them healthy and a few more teams could further quit on their coaches. There are a few games (Packers/Cowboys & Bears/Browns) that the line could drastically change mid-week depending on the health of their starting quarterbacks. Make sure to keep an eye on the NFL lines at, which have up-to-date point spreads.

In December, weather reports become more important than ever. Those must be looked at before you make a decision. It is also important to look at division records. If one of the teams in a game has nothing left to play for, it could sway your decision in the right direction.

We pick every NFL game against the spread and throw out a few upsets in Week 15 of the NFL season.

2013 Fantasy Football: Top 25 Quarterback Rankings

Drew+Brees+Carlton+Fresh+Prince+FunnyIt’s never too early to pontificate and post preseason fantasy football rankings.

As you may know, the top of the rankings are full of the usual suspects (Brees, Brady, Manning), but a few new faces pop up at the tail end of our rankings.

Colin Kaepernick is a “sexy” name for fantasy football analysts this offseason, but will he succumb to the ‘Super Bowl Runner-Up Jinx’.

Here are our Top 25 quarterback rankings for the 2013 fantasy football season. Continue reading

2012 Fantasy Football Rankings: Quarterbacks

Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady or Drew Brees have been the top fantasy quarterback picks over the last few seasons. The 2012 season is no different. The same trio is at the top of the preseason rankings and all of the usual suspects following them.

The quarterback situations in Seattle, Cleveland, Jacksonville, and Tennessee have left some question marks on where the value is at the quarterback position in fantasy football this season. Can you wait to pick a quarterback or will you have to grab one early or spend $45 dollars in an auction draft to have an elite QB.

We have some surprises for you in our quarterback rankings. I am not sold on Cam Newton this year and I love Philip Rivers more than most people. How will the rookie QBs fare this season?

Here is our Top 50 quarterback rankings for the 2012 NFL fantasy football season. Continue reading

2012 NFL Team Preview: Green Bay Packers

How did the Green Bay Packers fail to repeat as the Super Bowl champions last season? On the outside, it’s hard to believe. Green Bay had a 15-1 record, Aaron Rodgers threw for 45 touchdowns and Jordy Nelson had a breakout season. When you dive deeper and realize that they had the NFL’s worst passing defense, Greg Jennings had a down year and their rushing attack was non-existent, it makes sense.

Detroit and Chicago have improved their rosters this off-season and are both preseason favorites to make the playoffs. The NFC is loaded this season and every team will need to be almost perfect to achieve their goals. Can Green Bay fight off the rest of the pack and make another Super Bowl appearance?

Here is our 2012 NFL team preview for the Green Bay Packers.

2011 Win/Loss Record: 15-1

Key Additions: C Jeff Saturday, DE Anthony Hargrove, DE Phillip Merling, DE Nick Perry, DT Jerel Worthy, RB Marc Tyler, CB Casey Hayward, S Micah Pellerin, DT Mike Daniels and OT Andrew Datko.

Key Losses: QB Matt Flynn, RB Ryan Grant, OT Chad Clifton, CB Pat Lee andC Scott Wells.

Non-Division Schedule: AFC South and NFC West

Fantasy Sleeper: RB Marc Tyler – James Starks has the starting job going into the season, but he has never had the job by himself. He split the carries with Ryan Grant last year, who is no longer on the team. John Kuhn is still around to vulture touchdowns in Green Bay. The backup running back job is up in the air. Marc Tyler has the best shot at winning the job over Brandon Saine. Tyler had a solid career at USC, a college known for grooming elite NFL running backs. If you draft Starks, make sure you grab Tyler or Kuhn  as a handcuff.

Team Analysis: The winner of the NFC North will be beaten and bruised by the playoffs. It will be difficult for a team out of this division to keep it all together through to the Super Bowl. Rodgers is an elite quarterback, but will have little help from the running game. They signed veteran center Jeff Saturday to bolster up the line, but he has never been great at run blocking. The defense was a big problem for Green Bay last season. Clay Mathews and B.J. Raji had down years, but did see increased production from A.J. Hawk and Desmond Bishop. The Packers front office didn’t do anything to improve the secondary in the off-season. They drafted Hayward, but Green Bay’s secondary is still long in the tooth. Jay Cutler and Matthew Stafford are drooling at the chance to face them. If they can’t get pressure on the quarterback, Green Bay will lose games because of their secondary. For that reason, I have them losing the NFC North, but still getting a wild-card spot. The Packers will not make the Super Bowl in 2012-13.

2012 Wins Over/Under Line: 12 (Prediction: PUSH)

2012 Projected Win/Loss Record: 12-4
