2013 NFL Week 11 – Betting Picks Against Spread

ed-reed-released-2013-sadI started out strong last week, but the late games got me. I had a couple bad beats, but I had a better week than Ed Reed. I still have a strong 73-49-8 record against the spread this year.

I like a lot of favorites this week, but not in the marquee games. I suggest sleeping in on Sunday, since the early slate of games is atrocious. There are some nice bets, but watching those games will be a struggle.

There are only two teams on bye this week. Finally, the weeks of having a half dozen teams on bye are over. I suggest keeping an eye on injury reports and weather conditions from this point forward.

We pick every NFL game against the spread and throw out a few upsets in Week 11 of the NFL season.

2013 NFL Week 10 – Betting Picks Against Spread

Lauren-Tannehill-Miamia-Dolphins-Ryan-Tannehill-WifeMany home dogs performed well last week. I missed on Miami, Carolina and NY Jets last week (just like many others), but I also picked the Cleveland moneyline play and predicted the exact points in the Colts victory. My record against the spread is 67-42-7 on the season.

Say goodbye to any value in the points spreads. The value is now in the decent teams coming off byes or a close loss (New Orleans, Denver, Cincinnati). They are risky, but they’ll payoff at this point in the season. Keep those teams in mind in the coming weeks.

There are only four teams on bye this week. In the last two weeks, as many as six teams were taking the week off. I’m glad there are at least 14 games this week.

We pick every NFL game against the spread and throw out a few upsets in Week 10 of the NFL season.

2013 NFL Week 8 – Betting Picks Against Spread

Cincinnati-Bengals-NFL-CheerleaderI had a good week. I went 10-5 last week. I missed on the Colts game (like everybody else), but I also picked Buffalo on a moneyline play for the upset. Need betting advice for the NFL games this weekend? We pick every game against the spread in Week 8 of the NFL season.

Say goodbye to any value in the points spreads. The value is now in the decent teams with a bad record (Atlanta, NY Giants, Pittsburgh). Those plays are risky, but they’ll payoff again this week. Keep those teams in mind in the coming weeks.

Six teams are on bye this week, so there are three less games this weekend. Whoever made that decision in the NFL office should be fired. I’m sure he’s the same guy who’s pushing for more NFL games in London.

We pick every NFL game against the spread and throw out a few upsets in Week 8 of the NFL season.

NFL: Broncos’ Von Miller Faces Suspension

von-miller-PED-Broncos-NFLThe Denver Broncos could be without their All-Pro linebacker to start the 2013 season. Von Miller is facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy. He is currently appealing the suspension.

The suspension may not be what you think it’s for.

George Atallah, spokesman for the NFL Player’s Association said the union was working with Miller on his appeal. He then went on Twitter and said, “I can also confirm that Von’s case does not involve the Steroids and Related Substances Policy.”

2013 Fantasy Football: Top 15 Defense/ST Rankings

JJ-Watt-Crashes-A-Bachorlette-Party-Funny-Fantasy-FootballOver the past ten seasons, it’s rare that the preseason favorite DEF/ST team ends up on top at season’s end, but we do our best to rank the top 15 defenses and special teams for the 2013 NFL season.

With the addition of Percy Harvin, the Seattle Seahawks will be a tough team to pass up in the mid-rounds of your fantasy draft. I know defenses shouldn’t normally picked before the late, late rounds, but I expect big things from Richard Sherman and the rest of the defense…oh, and Percy Harvin possibly running back kickoffs & punts.

Here are our top 15 defense & special teams rankings for the 2013 NFL season. Continue reading

2012 NFL Team Preview: Denver Broncos

As a Colts fan, it still hurts to see Peyton Manning holding up a Broncos jersey. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it, but I wish him the best. I think he’ll be a nice addition in Denver, but for how long remains to be seen.

Denver lucked into the playoffs last year and managed to use their remaining luck to win a playoff team against Pittsburgh. They were then blown out by New England the following week. Denver’s front office realized that Tim Tebow could only get them so far. Once Manning went on the market, Tebow’s time in Denver was numbered.

How will Manning’s neck hold up after a couple in-game hits? Who will end up with the most rushing yards at the end of the year, McGahee, Moreno or Hillman? Here’s our 2012 NFL team preview for the Denver Broncos.

2011 Win/Loss Record: 8-8

Key Additions: QB Peyton Manning, QB Caleb Hanie, TE Jacob Tamme, CB Tracy Porter, FB Chris Gronkowski, LB Joe Mays, TE Joel Dressen, WR Andre Caldwell, DT Justin Bannem, WR Cameron Kenney, S Mike Adams, RB Ronnie Hillman, QB Brock Osweiler, DT Derek Wolfe, CB Omar Bolden and C Phillip Blake.

Key Losses: QB Tim Tebow, S Brian Dawkins, WR Eddie Royal, TE Dante Rosario, QB Brady Quinn, TE Daniel Fells, DT Brodrick Bunkley, DB Cassius Vaughn, LB Mario Haggan, DE Derrick Harvey, FB Spencer Larsen, DT Ryan McBean and CB Jonathan Wilhite.

Non-Division Schedule: AFC North and NFC South

Fantasy SleeperWR Brandon Stokley – Peyton Manning and Brandon Stokley are old friends and have worked out together this off-season. They were also teammates together in Indianapolis. Stokley had 1,000+ yards and 10 TDs with Manning in 2004. They have amazing chemistry together and will be a huge asset in the slot. Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas will have success in 2012, but they are known commodities and with Manning in Denver, both will be drafted higher than most predict.

Team Analysis: Manning will have success in Denver, but don’t expect his numbers to match his production in Indy, not yet. He could put up comparable number by the second-half, but he will need to get some in-game action to trust his neck. He has worked with his receivers, so chemistry shouldn’t be a huge factor. Ronnie Hillman is slated to be the featured back in Denver, but expect McGahee to get action out of the backfield. He is an elite pass-catching back and will still be a viable fantasy option. Also, as far as fantasy goes, Jacob Tamme is a player to keep an eye on. In 2011, Denver’s defense looked elite at times, but the constant ‘three and outs’ left the defense with their backs against the wall. Manning will not leave the defense in those spots like Tebow did last year. I expect Von Miller, Wesley Woodyard, and Robert Ayers to have careers years in Denver. Denver and San Diego will battle for the AFC West crown. Manning hasn’t had much success against San Diego in the past, so the Chargers could end up winning the division by a tiebreaker.

2012 Wins Over/Under Line: 8.5 (Prediction: OVER)

2012 Projected Win/Loss Record: 9-7

Demaryius Thomas Will Not Miss Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow and Demaryius Thomas connected on one of the most memorable catches during the 2011-12 season. The 80-yard game-winning touchdown helped add to the legend of Tebow. They ended up losing in the next round to the New England Patriots, which ended up being the last game for Tebow as a member of the Denver Broncos. During the off-season, the Broncos signed Peyton Manning and they orchestrated a trade that sent Tebow to the New York Jets. Now that he’s out of town, the truth is starting to leak out. Thomas didn’t mince words about his time as a wide receiver during the “Tebow Era” in Denver.

…let’s just say that Mr. Thomas is looking forward to catching balls from Peyton Manning.

Thomas went on the 2 Live Stews radio show on 790 The Zone in Atlanta and he didn’t mince words about Tebow. He said that “it was a business decision…I ain’t gonna say that I was sad because the only thing they remember is that pass. I wasn’t getting no balls and you had to make some of these plays where some players were open and he was not making the throws.” The comments made by him sound like he’s making excuses for his average regular season numbers. To be fair to Tebow, Thomas did drop some easy catches this year.

After he gave his personal opinion about Tebow, he spoke for the team and what they thought about the media coverage. “Eveything on ESPN was about Tim,” Thomas said. “That bothered some players, too, because they would say ‘Tim Tebow Time.’ I felt like it was a team thing. If it wasn’t for defense most of the time, there would be no supposed ‘Tim Tebow Time.’ “

Since Thomas was a freshman at Georgia Tech, he has not been in a pass-happy offense. Before his sophomore year, Paul Johnson took over that program and implemented the triple-option. He still had good numbers and ended up being the #22 pick overall by the Broncos in the 2010 NFL Draft. He caught 22 passes his rookie year and suffered an Achilles injury during the off-season. He rehabbed the injury and ended up catching 32 passes during the 2011 regular season. In his first two seasons, he has a total of 54 catches for 834 yards with 6 touchdowns.

It isn’t clear why Thomas made these comments, but he will have a bull’s eye on his back this season. These comments fall under the “wide receiver diva” category and infused with blatant jealousy. He made some valid points, but Manning will give him every opportunity to put up Pro Bowl-level numbers. It’s time for Thomas to let his hands and feet do his talking.

Will Tim Tebow and Demaryius Thomas kiss and make up…again?

Dolphins Trade Brandon Marshall To Bears

The Chicago Bears finally have an elite wide-receiver. Jay Cutler should be happy, because it is a player that he knows very well. The Miami Dolphins traded WR Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears for two 3rd-round draft picks. Even though he is coming off his best season with the Dolphins (81 receptions for 1,215 yards with six touchdowns), the price went down for Marshall’s services. The Dolphins gave the Denver Broncos two 2nd-round picks in 2010.

Cutler and Marshall put up some impressive numbers together in Denver. The last three seasons that they were in Denver, Marshall eclipsed 100 receptions each year. The Bears have lacked a prototypical wide-receiver for many years. The last receiver that put up consistent numbers was Bernard Berrian. I’m not saying that Devin Hester and Johnny Knox are bad receivers, but neither of them are a #1 receiving option on a championship contending team.

The Bears still need help on the offensive line and they look to add a few pieces in the upcoming NFL Draft. They should have a chance to add depth to a line has given up a lot of sacks over the past two seasons. They have other needs, but using the draft to pick up a few young offensive linemen is in their best interest.

Marshall is under contract through the 2014 season and has a contract around $9 million dollars per season. This signing could end all of the Mario Williams rumors that have been floating around. Williams is projected to receive a contract that averages at least $15 million per season. A pass rush combo of Julius Peppers and Williams would rival the Giants for the best pass rush in the NFL. Even if they aren’t able to sign Williams, the Bears took a step in the right direction by trading with Marshall.

Would Peyton Help Groom Tim Tebow?

As Peyton Manning is in Denver talking with the Broncos, we all wonder how this will affect Tim Tebow. It isn’t a guarantee that Manning will sign with them, since he will most likely visit a few more teams. Would Manning be afraid of the backlash that comes with blocking Tim Tebow from starting? Would he accept the role of mentor? What can Tebow learn from one of the games best quarterbacks? A lot of questions are still in the air, but one thing is known, they are both fierce competitors.

Manning has never been on a team with another quarterback that could start in the NFL. I think he has helped groom some of his back-ups in Indianapolis, but it wasn’t his job. When the Colts were winning 12 games a year, Jim Sorgi or Curtis Painer would play a lot in the last few games of the year. Manning would have a headset on and he would be calling plays. He was able to do that because he had no threat at losing his job. I’m guessing that he enjoyed watching someone that he helped mold and call plays for him. Saying all of that, the situation in Denver would be quite different.

Drafting Tim Tebow in the first-round and having the ground-swell of support from Denver’s fans, has been a problem for the Broncos front-office. John Elway has since taken over the operations and he wasn’t in charge when Tebow was drafted. Football bloggers and mainstream journalists were waiting to see if Elway would him a shot. After a watching the first few games last year, Elway thought that they had nothing to lose and unleashed Tebow. Was Elway hoping that he would fall on his face? Elway’s in a position that he has to leave Tebow alone or the fanbase will turn on him. The only way out of this would be if he signed Peyton Manning.

Denver’s defense was very solid last year and rookie Von Miller was exceptional. In a weak AFC West, the Broncos are built to win now. They have the cap space to sign Manning and maybe a few of his old teammates (Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, and/or Dallas Clark). The fanbase would realize that Manning would be the best choice to lead this team…right now.

What can Tebow learn from being Manning’s back-up? First, he would probably be in less pictorials with his shirt off. I’ve seen Tim Tebow shirtless more times than I have seen myself nude. After that is addressed, he can learn to become a better passer. Manning helped build an offense around his strengths. Tom Moore was a huge help in doing that, but he started to learn defenses and call audibles at the line. This what Tebow needs to learn the most from Manning. If he can recognize defenses, he can go in the huddle and call one passing play and one QB option play. He can see what the defense gives him and then signal to his teammates which play he’s calling. If he perfected that, Tebow would be more of a threat than Michael Vick…assuming that Tebow learns how to throw more accurately.

Will Manning groom Tim Tebow if he signs with Denver? I’m assuming that it would be a condition in his contract. What if Manning finishes his career there, in three or four years, and hands the keys to Tebow and he stinks? It wouldn’t completely tarnish his reputation, but it wouldn’t look good. Brett Favre never had that problem with Aaron Rodgers, even though he had nothing to do with Rodgers’ success.

The apprenticeship that Tebow would receive from Manning would be priceless. They are both fierce competitors, Tebow just needs someone to mold him. He will not be fixed over night, so Manning would be the perfect stopgap.

Seriously bro, put on a shirt!

How Ben Roethlisberger Helped Tim Tebow

We all know about the recent trouble that Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, got himself into. Teams are trying to stay away from players with possible “character issues,” could this have been the reason Tim Tebow shot up the draft board as a first-round pick?

Tim Tebow is probably the most celebrated college football player to come out since Roger Staubach. He was a tremendouse college football player and he is a model citizen. He is the kind of player that the NFL would love to have to represent “the shield.” With the recent trouble that some high-profile players have gotten themselves into, the NFL would love to have 50-players on every team like Tebow. Speak Before You Think Monday

After a long weekend, it is easy to do or say something that is completely insane. Your mind isn’t right on a Monday. You are still thinking about how you should have gotten that blonde’s number at the bar or how your team still has a shot at the National Championship, even if you lost a nationally televised game 35-3 (sorry Buckeyes, i live in your territory and I shouldn’t be so ill, but it’s real talk). Here is a few observations of things people are saying or what they have done without thinking things out clearly.

– The Milwaukee Brewers fired Ned Yost. Really? Before the Brewers hired him, they hadn’t had a winning season since dudes named Yount and Molitor were sporting the yellow and blue gear. I know that they imploded last season, but the team was full of rookies, I am not sold that they are used to the long Major League season. You can’t make much of an argument that they are tanking again this season, because they haven’t been in first place since the beginning of the season. Milwaukee is realizing that they only have Sabathia and Sheets for this one season and they will not be able to sign them, so they must win now. Rickie Weeks has been a disappointment so far and J.J. Hardy is not consistent. The trade talk has already started about Prince Fielder, they realize that they can’t win every game with their offense and your #1 starter cannot be Dave Bush or Manny Parra. Fielder is set for abitration soon and he will also grant a huge contract when free agency comes around. The Brewers may still make the playoffs, but now they have to combat the Phillies/Mets, whoever doesn’t win the NL East, and Houston. Not a smart move by the upper management in Milwaukee, Yost will get a job next season, either as a manager or a high-profile bench coach.

– Carlos Zambrano is back. I’m a Chicago Cubs, everyone who reads this blog knows this is true. Historically, Zambrano is extremely good on a long rest. He nearly had a no-hitter mid-season this year after he took some time off for injury. He may throw another gem next time out too, but it’s too soon to say he is back. Houston evacuated a hurricane and their minds were not 100% on baseball. The game was also played in Milwaukee, which is Wrigley Field North. If you go to any Cubs/Brewers game, the Cubs fans/Brewers fan ratio could learn in Chicago’s favor, let alone Houston fans versus Chicago fans. Also, Ted Lilly took a no-hitter today into the 7th inning against Houston and the last few games I watched Lilly pitch, he looked horrible. Zambrano needs his last few starts to be solid for me to be sold.

– Ohio State still has a shot at that National Championship. Even if OSU runs the table in the Big Ten, the best they can do is a birth in the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, if USC loses a game or two, they will meet there. I don’t see USC losing any games, but there is a Pac-10 team that usually gives them a close game or beats them (i.e. Stanford, Oregon State). The Buckeyes do have a chance to turn the season around, but that would mean Todd Boeckman would lose his job as starting quarterback. Terrelle Pryor looked pretty good against USC, but it was a too tough of a test for a true freshman to face. Beanie Wells may have made this game closer, but he wouldn’t have won the game for Ohio State. Wells would have helped them have some ball control and help manage the clock. The score would have been around 27-10, still an embarassment. Ohio State has no shot at making the BCS Championship game, so I do not want to hear about a slim chance, there is no chance.

– The Minnesota Vikings will still make the playoffs. They are 0-2 and it looks like the NFC North will be very solid this year. I know that they lost to the Packers and Colts, two teams that are playoff caliber, but the way they played in those games didn’t look like a playoff team to me. Adrian Peterson should have ran all over Indianapolis, which he did, but never got into the endzone. Tavarius Jackson isn’t a starting quarterback in this league, yet. He may be a starter in the future, but with the kind of talent this team has, minus wide-receivers (they really don’t have any #1 receiver), they need an establish quarterback to spread the defense and let Peterson run amok. The Bears are better (they play them twice), the Lions can score points, something Minnesota has trouble with (they play them twice, the Packers own them (they play them again), and they play the AFC South (which is one of the best divisions in the league). I would suggest that you look at the remaining schedule of the team before you put them in the playoffs, Mike & Mike.

– Denver Broncos is the best team in the AFC. They have looked impressive so far this season, but they played the Raiders and a San Diego team that haven’t found themselves without Shawne Merriman. Eddie Royal has been a huge surprise, Brandon Marshall caught about a million pases this week, and Jay Cutler looks like John Elway. The NFL loves to scheme and take players out of the game, I’m guessing the next few weeks that teams will start pressuring Cutler more and make the young quarterback think faster on his feet. They will have to run the ball more, which may fall into Shanahan’s lap, but this core of Denver running backs aren’t Terrell Davis or Clinton Portis, it’s Selvin Young and a few castoffs from other teams. Denver looks like they will win that division, it looks to be very weak, but they are not the best team in the AFC. They will have to beat New England, Indianapolis, or Pittsburgh to garner that honor.
