Song Of The Day – Shwayze (Corona And Lime)

Shwayze seems to be the “it” group of the summer. The song “Buzzin” has stayed near the top of iTunes charts all season and with their new track, “Corona and Lime,” they are not slowing down. The track is at #3 on iTunes currently and is also a nice and breezy summer track that will do very well for them.

Their album is set to be released on 8/19/2008, I’m assuming that they re-recorded the album to add more Cisco Adler, since any other group’s band would have already been released if their first track did as well as Shwayze’s. They are currently on Warped Tour and will be touring until the end of the year with Metro Station (a fellow “Song Of The Day” honoree).

Look for Shwayze’s album out later this month, I’m sure it will be a top 5 album that week. Here is the video for “Corona And Lime.”

Song Of The Day – Newton Faulkner (Dream Catch Me)

I know, I know…why am I putting the spotlight on a white boy with the #1 white boy offense, white man dreadlocks. I held off on listening to Newton Faulkner for this reason, but I stumbled upon a song of his called “Dream Catch Me.” I have really fond of this song for really unknown reasons. I have listened to the rest of his debut album, “Hand Built By Robots” and I haven’t found anything else on the album close to the quality of “Dream Catch Me.”

I will let Mr. Faulkner off the hook for his dreads only for the fact that he is British and sometimes they are a little quirky. If he was from Des Moines, Iowa, I would put him “On Notice” and send a formal letter to Stephen Colbert to announce it on his program.

This song charted all over Europe last year at this time, but was pretty much left alone over here in the States. Newton Faulkner has some talent and maybe his next album will have some popularity over here, if he does something about that rat nest on his head.

Here is the audio for “Dream Catch Me.”

Song Of The Day – Metro Station (Control)

I heard Metro Station’s “Control” in a random tv commercial about a month ago. I didn’t know who the song was by, but the commercial caught my attention every time it was played. I guess it wasn’t a great commercial, I can’t remember what it was advertising, but I do remember the song.

Metro Station is a dance-punk band that reminds me of The Secret Handshake and The Faint. They are all young guys that should have a long career in the music business ahead of them. Their self-titled debut album is doing well and I am seeing their name all over last.fm user profiles.

I couldn’t find an official version of “Control” that they would let me embed, so here is a user’s video with lyrics.

Song Of The Day – Manchester Orchestra (I Can Barely Breathe)

I know it’s been awhile since my last “Song Of The Day” or any post really, but that’s going to change. I have been moving the America’s White Boy corporate offices (I got a new apartment) all week and have been really busy this month.

I was bored and looking around myspace and realized that one of my friends has an interesting cousin, so I clicked on her page and a beautiful song started playing. It took me awhile to find out what this track was, but it was Manchester Orchestra’s “Sacred Heart.” It sounds like Bright Eyes, but good. I’ve always had this anti-Conor Oberst thing, but I do like a few Bright Eyes songs, but not enough to like them. Anyways, I found out that I already have the new Manchester Orchestra album and I checked it out, it is quite good.

Here is the very artsy video for “I Can Barely Breath.” You will like it, I’m sure of it.

Song Of The Day – Stereophonics (Lying In The Sun)

Stereophonics is an iconic rock band from the UK, they have had multiple #1 albums, but their UK success hasn’t really lead to equal success in the U.S. I first heard of Stereophonics in 2001 when I got the album “Just Enough Education To Perform.” J.E.E.P., as it is usually called, is one of the best albums to be released in the UK that year and was a huge hit. Kelly Jones, the lead vocalist of Stereophonics, has such a nice voice, sound a bit like Ray LaMontagne with a pinch of Adam Levine from Maroon 5.

I started to dive deeper into the Stereophonics catalog and found another album that should have been a hit in the U.S. “Performance and Cocktails” was released in 1999, but sadly at that time the U.S. radio was crowded with bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn, so bands like Stereophonics didn’t get enough airplay. The album had great tracks like “T-Shirt Sun Tan,” “Is Yesterday, Tomorrow, Today?,” and my favorite, “A Minute Longer.”

Stereophonics have released many albums since “J.E.E.P.” and “Performance and Cocktails” and had their most success in the U.S. with the single “Dakota” off of their “Language, Sex, Violence, Other?” album.

It’s not too late for Stereophonics to make a huge splash in the U.S., but if they didn’t win us yankees over with their earlier work, I’m not too sure if it will ever happen now.

Song Of The Day – The Rocket Summer (Brat Pack)

As you can tell by my recent addition of a last.fm widget, I like The Rocket Summer. I found this band about five years ago when browsing around the web looking for new music. I ended up buying the “Calendar Days” album and I basically listened to it everyday for as long as I can remember. I got the “Hello, Good Friend” album when it came out and was very pleased by it. The Rocket Summer released “Do You Feel” last year and I haven’t warmed up to it yet, but give me some time.

The Militia Group has a way of finding some really nice talent. Bryce Avery started The Rocket Summer as kind of a one-man show. I think the young man has enough talent to sell a lot of albums and his work could transcend after this generation’s music is covered in dust. The Rocket Summer signed with Island Records and released “Do You Feel,” but they have changed their style a little and could need another album to really shine in their new sound.

Here is a video for “Brat Pack,” it’s a nice song about living life and having a great time with your friends, while trying not to live in the past.

Song Of The Day – Black Star (Definition)

I watched “Be Kind Rewind” last night and I was reminded how much like Mos Def as an actor. I loved Mos Def in “The Italian Job” and think he did a good job in this film as well. He is a much better actor than Andre Benjamin. I did like Andre-3000 in “Four Brothers,” but I watched “Semi-Pro” a month ago and that movie was a stinker. I guess I should get to discussing my pick for “Song Of The Day,” I was really close to posting Mos Def’s “Ms. Fat Booty” only to have pervs find the site and like what they see.

Black Star is a duo that consists of Mos Def and Talib Kweli. The entire album reminds me of the summer of 1999 when my friend, Mixin’ Nate, bought it and listened to it in his Mazda that entire summer. I didn’t know much about either of the guys then, but I have became a fan since that summer. Kweli could be considered as one of the best lyricists in hip-hop today (with Common coming in at a close second). Black Star have been “working” on a new album for awhile and something should be done within the next couple years. They have guest-starred on each other’s albums and a new Black Star album would be very popular.

Here is Black Star’s video for “Definition.”

Song Of The Day – Rogue Wave (Eyes)

I like to watch television. I like that the new season of Real World, when they play a song during the show, they list the artist and song on the bottom of the screen. There has been two occasions this year where I’ve heard a song on a television show and I had to use the power of Google to find the song I desperately need to download. The first occasion was during a re-run of The O.C. (yes, the White Boy used to watch that show, quite often with the roommates), the song ended up being a song by Rogue Wave called “California.” I was shocked that the second time this occurred it was the same band.

My roommate has the first two seasons of Heroes on his PC. I was bored and I do not have cable at the moment (please see previous post about my anger at my female roommate). I ended watching the entire first season of the show within a three day period and there was a song that appears in the first couple of episodes. I thought it was Bright Eyes, but clearly not whiny enough, so I was confused. I ended up using some key phrases in google and found out that it was Rogue Wave’s “Eyes.”

Is Rogue Wave the kings of sitcom music? Kind of…I found out that their music has been used in other programs like Scrubs, Chuck, Friday Night Lights, Nip/Tuck, and a few others. They have three albums out and are currently on Brushfire Records, good news for Jack Johnson and Matt Costa fans.

I really like this song and I think it is rather catchy. Here is a video that was made for Rogue Wave’s “Eyes.” I rather doubt that it is the official video, but rather poetic.

Song Of The Day – Ray LaMontagne (Empty)

I don’t have many things that I regret in life, but one of them was not seeing Ray LaMontagne live in concert. Two years ago, right when I was moving from Northern Indiana to Columbus, Ohio, I won a radio contest and I received two free tickets to Guster/Ray LaMontagne concert. I wanted to save money and didn’t see myself driving all the way down to Indianapolis and then driving back home to just drive to Columbus the next day. I didn’t know who Ray LaMontagne was at the time, but I have seen Guster before and they were amazing.

About three months after I moved to Ohio I decided that I wanted to investigate how Ray LaMontagne sounded. I wasn’t too impressed at first, but the album “Til The Sun Turns Black” started to be played everyday. I ended up getting his two previous albums (“Raycharles LaMontagne” and “Trouble), both of the albums are excellent and led me to download a live performance at Bonnaroo Festival in 2005.

At first I thought Mr. LaMontagne was British, his style of musicianship sounded very influenced, plus his voice sounded as if there were a hint of accent. I saw a picture of him and I still thought it was British, I mean look at that beard (a bit Cat Stevens-ish). I later found out that he was born in New Hampshire, but his family moved quite a bit and he ended up living in about every corner of the United States.

Ray LaMontagne makes great music and should be shared by all. Here is a performance of “Empty” that was performed on the BBC (see, I knew he was at least popular in the UK).

Song Of The Day – War Tapes (Mind Is Ugly)

Here at America’s White Boy, we love emails, love them! We especially love emails from record labels, I still have many record label friends from my time being a music journalist, they are good people. We received an email from Katy from Sarathan Records, an Indie-label in Seattle (we love west coast indie labels). She viewed a few of our “Song Of The Day” posts and thought that we may like a band on her label called War Tapes. We checked them out and yes, War Tapes gets our nod of approval.

War Tapes have toured with Smashing Pumpkins, The Bravery, and currently, Tiger Army. Katy described them as “Interpol meets AFI with a dose of The Cure,” I love all three of those bands. I would also like to add that they sound like Alkaline Trio’s side project, Heavens.” I like their gothic undertone, which is probably the Matt Skiba-esque vocals from the War Tapes lead singer.

We already get a lot of press releases from music labels, but I always read them and love checking out new bands, so keep the emails coming.

Song Of The Day – City And Colour (Comin’ Home)

Dallas Green is probably best known as the lead singer of the band Alexisonfire, but that could change soon. His side-project, City & Colour, released their second LP, “Bring Me Your Love,” and I’m loving it. It’s such a huge change of pace from the fast and aggressive Alexisonfire style, C&C is the calm, more folksy, singer/songwriter style.

Their second single, “Comin’ Home,” has hit the airwaves and should be a hit for Dallas Green. Vagrant Records has a history of taking chances on bands and has had great success. Dashboard Confessional and Saves The Day have both found success on the label and City & Colour should do very well.

Song Of The Day – The Color Fred (Don’t Pretend)

Fred Mascherino is best known for his work with the group Taking Back Sunday. In late 2007, he released the debut album for his side-project, “The Color Fred.” Needlesstosay, after some success with The Color Fred, he left Taking Back Sunday to focus all his time on the new project. The album “Bend To Break” is doing well and should be touring this summer in support of the album.

The Color Fred is calmer than his work with Taking Back Sunday. He is the lead singer and in TBS he was best known for yelling backing vocals. I think he has something new and refreshing with his new band and I expect some good things in the future.

I think it’s about time for Taking Back Sunday and the former members who left for Straylight Run to do something soon. Taking Back Sunday has a huge audience and Straylight Run’s last album didn’t do very well at all.

Here is a live performance of The Color Fred’s “Don’t Pretend.”
