Blue Jackets Hire John Tortorella

John-Tortotella-columbus-blue-jackets-nhlI’m a fan of the Columbus Blue Jackets. I don’t write much about them because they don’t give me a lot to say. They bounce between the worst team in the NHL and the 8th seed in the playoffs.

Columbus started out 0-7 to begin the 2015-16 NHL season. The team finally cut ties with head coach Todd Richards and hired the bulldozer John Tortorella.

The Blue Jackets are one of those NHL teams that if you’re not a fan of hockey, you may not realize they exist. They are still fairly new for pro team standards, but they should have more national name exposure by this point.

Tortorella has the playoff experience Columbus needs to push them in the right direction. How will they react to Tortorella’s hard-line demeanor?

Blue Jackets Win First-Ever Playoff Game

Matt Calvert Columbus Blue Jackets Pittsburgh Penguins Playoff Win 2014 NHLI’ve been waiting fourteen years to say this, but the Columbus Blue Jackets FINALLY won a playoff game. They have only made the playoffs one other time since they joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000. They were swept by the Detroit Red Wings in 2009

After losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first game of the series, the Blue Jackets beat the Penguins in double-overtime on Saturday night. Matt Calvert scored the winning goal.

The series now goes to Nationwide Arena in Columbus tied 1-1 for games three and four.

Can the Blue Jackets pull off the upset and win the series?

Betting on Who Will Win The NHL This Season

nhl chicago blackhawks stanley cup winner 2013-14NHL ice hockey is noted for being a somewhat physically brutal spectacle at times, but trying to pick a side to win it this season may be almost as mentally brutal for sports betting fans. After all, at this point in the 2013/14 season, at least four or five teams are almost impossible to choose between, as the Penguins, Blackhawks, Bruins and Ducks are all displaying Stanley Cup-winning form in their various divisions. The bookmakers can find little to divide these sides in terms of quality either, so exactly who should you lay your wagers on?

If you were going purely on divisional performances, then perhaps the Penguins should be your pick – as their sixteen point advantage in the Metropolitan one shows just how much they are outclassing the other sides. None of the three other teams have a lead of this magnitude, but the Blackhawks are arguably the strongest overall side, having won Conference and Cup last year, and kept most of the players who did so. New Orleans Pelicans Make Mascot Less Frightening

PierrePelicanNewOrleansPelicansMascotScaryThe New Orleans Pelicans mascot, Pierre the Pelican, went under the knife. The team announced he was having plastic surgery to fix his beak.

The picture on the right is the ‘before’ picture. He was scaring kids and looked like something in a bad furry movie. Who approved this mascot? Was it the same guy who approved ‘Boomer’, the Columbus Blue Jackets failed cannon mascot that looked like, ummm, a ‘cannon’ and two round things below it. I’m trying to keep it PG-13 around here…at least when it comes to mascots.

See what the new and improved Pierre looks like now…after the jump.

Hockey Talk: Sweetbob Edition

spiderman_cryingSince Joe Pasquali is fell asleep crying after going to Game 3 of the ALCS in Detroit and I assume Eddie Thiesen probably passed out in the bathrub…because it’s, uh, Tuesday? Good ole’ Sweetbob will take over today’s ‘Hockey Talk’ just to post a beautiful video that the guys may not enjoy.

My Columbus Blue Jackets played Joe & Eddie’s Detroit Red Wings tonight. Detroit won 2-1, but CBJ’s Cam Atkinson scored a gorgeous end-to-end goal. Columbus has some nice young talent. Atkinson is one of the reasons why I haven’t jumped off a bridge. I have hope that they’ll make the playoffs this year and win their very first playoff game as a franchise (not an entire series, I’m being realistic). *fingers crossed*

The video is after the jump…

NHL Talk: MVP Race, Cheap Tickets & Hot Dogs

SadOilersDogTwo hockey guys talking hockey.

Joe Pasquali and Eddie Theisen are two die-hard NHL fans. They both watch every hockey game, every night (almost).

The guys talk about teams who are fighting for playoff position and wonder how the New Jersey Devils are this bad when they’re loaded with talent.

I’ve been holding my breath during the final stretch of the season. I’m a Columbus Blue Jackets fan and they’ve been flirting with the #8 seed in the Western Conference. Will they make it? Probably not, but it’s nice to watch an “almost” playoff team (I’m a Chicago Cubs fan).

This is their email conversation this afternoon. Continue reading

NHL Talk: Trade Deadline Special

Marian+Gaborik+Blue+JacketsTwo hockey guys talking hockey.

Joe Pasquali and Eddie Theisen are two die-hard NHL fans. They both watch every hockey game, every night (almost).

The guys talk about the NHL trade deadline and which teams are the winners and losers.

My Columbus Blue Jackets were really active, but the pieces they traded in exchange for Marian Gaborik could leave diehard fans a bit sad. They traded away three homegrown talents for only 1.5 guaranteed seasons of Gaborik.

NHL Talk: Edward Pasquale, Nordiques Bet & WNBA Fights

Clark+Griswold+Vacation+Blackhawks+JerseyTwo hockey guys talking hockey.

Joe Pasquali and Eddie Theisen are two die-hard NHL fans. They both watch every hockey game, every night (almost).

The guys talk about the Joe’s long-lost cousin, Edward Pasquale’s NHL debut, cutting in line at fast food places, their new bet involving Nordiques & North Stars gear, and WNBA cat fights.

Whoever loses their hockey bet, one of the guys will get hipster hockey cred by sporting extinct NHL team gear.

NHL Talk: Blue Jackets, Rick DiPietro & Manhood Bets

Matt+Calvert+CBJ+Columbus+Blue+Jackets

Two hockey guys talking hockey.

Joe Pasquali and Eddie Theisen are two die-hard NHL fans. They both watch every hockey game, every night (almost).

The guys talk about the Blue Jackets big win, if corn on the cob is underrated, Jovanovski swag and they say goodbye to Rick DiPietro.

After reading yesterday’s NHL Talk, I mixed Apple Cinnamon Cheerios with Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes. The concoction was better than I imagined. It could be a cheap go-to when I’m looking to perfect the mixology of breakfast cereals.

NHL Talk: Dziurzynski, Zamboni Rides & Breakfast Cereal

lucky charmsTwo hockey guys talking hockey.

Joe Pasquali and Eddie Theisen are two die-hard NHL fans. They both watch every hockey game, every night (almost).

The guys talk about Dziurzynski getting knocked the f*ck out, if certain AHL teams could beat their NHL affiliate, paid zamboni rides, and which breakfast cereal is the all-time best.

My favorite cereal is a mixture of Apple Cinnamon Cheerios & Cinnamon Toast Crunch. If a Cereality store was near me, I’d weigh 400 pounds.

NHL Talk: Hockey Auctions, Edmonton & Free Chili

skyline-chiliTwo hockey guys talking hockey.

Joe Pasquali and Eddie Theisen are two die-hard NHL fans. They both watch every hockey game, every night (almost).

The guys talk about what you can get at an NHL online auction, why Columbus fans get extra excited when they hear a specific goal horn, hockey fights and various other happenings from this weekend’s NHL action.

I believe this is the third time in two weeks the guys have a lengthy conversation about chili. I’m completely fine with it. Excuse me while I go buy some chili.

Zdeno+Chara+Shirtless+NHL+Boston+BruinsTwo hockey guys talking hockey.

Joe Pasquali and Eddie Theisen are two die-hard NHL fans. They both watch every hockey game, every night (almost).

The guys talk about Zdeno Chara’s goal, Anaheim’s trading deadline dilemma, Schlitz beer and the Blackhawks amazing point streak.

It’s a shame that the NHL Lockout had to happen this season. Chicago could be on an historic run, but sadly the season was shortened.

By the way, neither of these guys have a girlfriend.
