Ibanez’s Reaction Is What We Want

Midwest Sports Fans had a story a few days ago that lead to speculation about Raul Ibanez and performance-enhancing drugs. The story was thorough and well thought-out. The writer tried to convey both side of the argument and gave interesting facts that support both sides of the opinion. Jerod Morris, the writer of the post on Midwest Sports Fans, is getting wrongly accused of throwing out accusations that he believes that Ibanez is on something illegal. If people would just read the entire article, and not just snippets, they would leave with the opinion that Morris doesn’t know the answer himself, but understands why someone would think something is fishy. This isn’t really a story about Ibanez as much as a story about the past ghosts that will continue to haunt Major League Baseball players until they allow blood testing for testing. Until the public have 100% certainty that players are clean, it will always be the elephant in the room.

On the otherhand, I love Ibanez’s response to the post. If the alleged accusation was a Stephen Strasburg heater, he hit it out of the park. He is taking the approach that I wish Bonds, McGwire, or any other player should have taken. I do admit that Ibanez’s “mother basement” line was out-of-line, but I do acknowledge his passion for proving his innocence. I want him to go a step farther. I would like to see him ignore the player’s union and accept an independent drug-test, the kind that would be as strict as the Olympic-testing.

This story is very unique. You don’t see a blog causing a stir, unless your Deadspin, let alone this kind of exposure. It proves that bloggers are increasing their reach and gaining more notablity in mainstream media. I love it. I do think that about 85% of sports blogs are poorly written and are just out to slam sports figures, but there are some great ones out there.

Before I finish this post, I would like to submit my opinion on Ibanez. I believe he had something to prove. He has never been on a contender before, most of his career was with Kansas City and Seattle. The motivation to do well and finally win a championship was there this year, more than past seasons. He also knew that he was in a line-up with Utley, Howard, and Rollins, the pressure isn’t going to be there, as he has bats around to protect him. My last point would be that he went from the American League to the National League. History tells us that players who take the leap over to the National League do better. I think all these factors add up to Ibanez’s hot start to the season. We have to remember that the season isn’t even halfway over. Many players have had just as good 2nd-halfs, but it flies under the radar usually, since most fans just look at the season average and totals.

I would like to congratulate Jerod Morris for the great article. The response is a little mixed as a whole, but this will go down as the top blog post of 2009.

Nintendo shits their pants. Or according to them someone put poop in ’em.

Uh oh. Did you feel that? It was Nintendo’s shudder when they realized that they might not have the upper hand anymore. The Wii Motion Plus, what once seemed like another nail in Microsoft and Sony’s coffin, now looks like one of Nintendo’s old forays into forgettable peripherals. Motion controllers are old tech now and the other two guys might of caught up in an overzealous leap.

Don’t get me wrong here. Nintendo isn’t crashing and burning right now. But now they are playing defense to justify themselves. Unfortunately it’s not coming off very well. Nintendo definitely had us drinking their Kool-aid for sure. People were storming stores looking for plastic wheels, boards with pressurized feet, and analog sticks with an accelerometer in them. In the wake of Project Natal (Microsoft’s motion tech) and whatever Sony’s will be named motion tech, this makes all of Nintendo’s efforts either look very archaic or very childish. Did I mention expensive? No one really knows what the price will be for Natal and PS3’s tech but, there were some clues dropped for anybody who wants to pay attention. They did say that Natal was going to be packaged in with 360 units. That can’t be said yet with Motion Plus and at 25 bucks a pop you just paid 100 bucks to get everybody on your system up to date. Not to mention the 3 other Wiimotes you bought to get everybody to play. $220 now if you are keeping score. How many Natals do you need to have 4 people play? One. Now you have a place with a bunch of white plastic laying around.

Yet you are going to have the forum dwellers post with all their exquisite apathy and shrug. Looking cooler than ever before. They will say that Nintendo’s works just fine and it’s good enough for them. Or that Natal and Sony’s tech isn’t that great. What was Nintendo’s new tech? The heart monitor. That will definitely see as much use as the Wiispeak. Maybe it’ll be easy to point out how horrible the presentation was for Natal and laugh. Yet I suppose everybody is easy to forget about last years Wii Music and Ravi Drums. You could say Natal-station3(whatever) won’t work as advertised. Fair enough I say. I am not holding my breath for being able to show my girlfriends new dresses they should buy and have an online fashion party. But people are playing it and their impressions are way more positive than I thought were going to be.

In the end maybe this the best thing for Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, and all of us. Competition will spur more innovation. Maybe it’ll spur better use of motion controls in actual games. Whatever it is, it will definitely be a unique time to be a gamer. Less party games though. Oh god the party games.

Oh and what the fuck is up with that Milo? Peter, seriously?

Casual gaming: Not Your Mom’s PopCap Games Anymore

The term “casual gaming” only really is noticed by the “core” gamer. It is the one phrase that you can say and instantly see a forum war unravel right infront of your eyes. That phrase is somewhat to a threat to their very existance because they see it as the platform where they will be ignored and “core” gaming will go extinct.

You maybe playing some of these games and don’t even know it. Bejeweled is one of the most prolific examples of casual games. The mom who is addicted to Zuma or the guy who spends his time playing tower defence games at work on the computer are good examples. I believe the definition for casual games goes beyond some marketing jargon. What seems casual to me is a game that you can invest a little in and get out quickly. Price should also factor in too. A game with simple gameplay mechanics and structure should reflect that in their price tag as well. It’s all part of the investment of developers and mine. Yet don’t confuse that with how much enjoyment it can give you. I can have as much fun with iDracula as something like Fable 2. Both are great games despite the $59 difference in price.

Yet many gamers and nongamers alike dismiss each others games. And many for valid reasons. But I believe the lines are getting blurry and it will be hard to distinguish the critirea of what’s “casual” and what’s “core”. One new example is with the recent launch of Quake Live. Quake Live is basically good ol’ Quake 3 Arena that you can play through your browser. Sounds pretty straight foward and it sure plays like it (Quake 3 was, I thought, one of the purest gaming experiences). Though what maybe overlooked is the leaps that this makes. A real fps that anyone can play on really any computer (unless your compy is from like 1995 and has a turbo button or a Mac) without installing any programs just some plug-ins on your browser. Couple with the fact you will be playing online with tons of people and you already a have a really fantastic idea. Still some people may say that they are really bad at these type of games. Thats ok too, because once you sign-up the first thing you do is play a match against a bot to test where your skill lies. Then afterwards you will be suggested games that contain players from a similar skill set that you possess. This makes playing matches very fun because you’re not getting you ass handed to you by the people who don’t do anything but play Quake since it came out. You can then make friends and add them to a list to play with them later or even clan matches if thats your cup of tea. Best of all is that your profile is saved to the site not your computer. So you can play on your profile from virtually where ever you can get online. So you could play a match or two on your break at work or pull an all nighter if you want to get your hands real dirty.

Which goes back to my point about “casual” games. Quake’s mechanics are simple enough i.e., shoot dudes. You don’t have to invest much time or any money to get into it (Quake Live is ad supported, yet I haven’t noticed any) to get alot of enjoyment. Just go to the site and in a matter of seconds you’ll find yourself in a match. Play one or two and then just close the browser (or check out some random Youtube videos). Sounds pretty casual to me. Even your mom can jump in a game with ease. So in the end Quake Live blends elements of a  “casual” and “core” game (this is a real fps after all) into a great package that everybody should check out. Play some matches and then hit me up on the comments and I may come by to frag ya online.

NFL Football Free Agency – Week 1 Recap

It’s been a busy week in the NFL. The free agency period started on friday and after the first few days, a lot of activity has happened. The NFL doesn’t waste any time in signing prized players, since only a portion of their contracts are guaranteed, unlike the MLB and NBA. The Redskins and Jets have already made a big splash, but will it pay off with a Super Bowl ring?

Albert Haynesworth – Haynesworth was a major reason why the Titans dominated the AFC regular season. They were a different team when he went out with an injury. The Washington Redskins offered him a $100 million dollar contract and he couldn’t resist. I don’t know why this deal reminds me of Dan Wilkinson, ’cause I don’t see anyone really paying to see an NFL game to watch an interior lineman. The Redskins need help in other areas and they still need many pieces to compete in the loaded NFL East.

Kellen Winslow – The Browns traded Winslow to Tampa Bay for draft picks. I don’t like this trade for Cleveland. If they are sold on Brady Quinn being their quarterback, he needs a pass-catching tight end to be effective. He likes to dump off short passes, like he did to John Carlson when he was at Notre Dame. I know Winslow is a problem child, but you have to think that they could work this out.

Fred Taylor – New England signed Taylor this week to a short-term contract. This reminds me of Corey Dillon’s deal with the Pats. Taylor should have a similar role with New England. The backfield is a bit jumbled with Maroney and Faulk still there.

Sage Rosenfels – The Minnesota Vikings traded a fourth-round pick to the Texans for Rosenfels. I know Rosenfels gave a game away to Indianapolis early this season, but he is a proven back-up in the NFL. When he is in the game, he can rack up yardage.

Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington – The Denver Broncos picked up both Buckhalter and Arrington. The Broncos don’t have a number one running back and they still don’t. Buckhalter has been a good fill-in for Westbrook and can catch out of the backfield. Arrington gives you a proven return-guy if they move Eddie Royal out of that role. I still see the Broncos drafting a young back in the draft.

Brandon Jones – The 49ers signed Brandon Jones for a multi-year contract. San Francisco must see something in the young receiver that the Titans looked over. The Titans lack and explosive receiver, but the Niners think Jones can fill that role. I think this signing could be a mistake.

Lito Shepherd – The Jets traded draft picks to Philadelphia for Shepherd. The Jets secondary is starting to take shape and I like what I see. Revis is a good, young talent and with Shepherd, it could be one of the best in the AFC.

Bart Scott – The Jets was busy and landed Bart Scott as their #1 target this free agency period. A lot of people thought that Ray Lewis would end up in New York, but they went with the younger, more talented linebacker. The Jets’ defense will be the best in the AFC East.

Matt Cassel – Kansas City landed their franchise quarterback by trading a 2nd round draft pick for Cassel and the verteran, Mike Vrabel. Cassel with be a better long-term fit than Tyler Thigpen. “Thiggy” did cement himself as a competent back-up, in case Cassel struggles.

Brian Dawkins – The Eagles secondary is getting more and more depleted by the day. The Broncos picked up Brian Dawkins and will trot out Champ Bailey, Dre Bly, and Dawkins in their secondary. I know they are all kind of “long in the tooth,” but they should play much better than last year.

Jon Kitna – The Dallas Cowboys traded their starting cornerback, Anthony Henry, to the Lions for Jon Kitna. This is probably the worst transaction since the Cowboys traded for Roy Williams. The Lions were going to cut Kitna, so I don’t know why they would trade Henry for him. It saves Dallas less than $2 million dollars, so it can’t be categorized as a money-saving move. I sure hope Tony Romo stays healthy or we will see the Kitna/Williams tandem once again.

Keith Brooking – Dallas signed the veteran and makes the Cowboys linebackers some of the oldest in the league. They should be adequate, but nothing to write home about.

Dan Orlovsky – The Texans needed a back-up QB, since they traded Rosenfels to the Vikings. Orlovsky did well last season, but has a lot to prove to be an adequate back-up to a fragile quarterback. The Texans need to draft a young QB in the draft as an insurance policy.

Song Of The Day – Matt & Kim (Daylight)

My radio has been tuned to sports talk radio here of late. I don’t really understand my interest in un-athletic, opinionated people yelling on the radio about over-paid jocks. I needed to change it up and I started to discover some music that I have been ignoring the last month or two. I turned it on my favorite station here in Columbus, OH and found a band called “Matt & Kim.” I really like their style and think they are really talented.

Matt & Kim are a Brooklyn, NY-based band that met while going to school. Their album, “Grand” was released on The Fader Label. They are a punk/dance duo that have been working hard on the road to support their music. They are currently on a national tour and should be hitting a venue near you soon. Their sound is rejuvenating to the ears, something new.

If you want to find out more about Matt & Kim, check out their website @ MattAndKimMusic.com.

How Obama got America back on its feet and marginalized his opposition

Our President just gave an outstanding address. Not only he perfectly state what his plans were for the country but showing an investment in what he expects from us. It is that expectation that had the republicans feeling the walls close in on them. After all of this “united message” from leaders of the GOP they found that their message is just a little tweet on a Twitter that no one is following. The President made everybody stand up and cheer on issues that you would of never dreamed of in the last administration. If you get Senator McCain to give a standing ovation on ending the war on Iraq or to get them to cheer about taxing the rich people I’d expect you to almost walk on water. But what the President did was to call them out in the most polite way and just pretty much force them to almost apologize for all their talking points they been putting out on TV. At least it seemed like it with all the clapping they did tonight.

Then you get Gov. Jindal with the “Republican response”. I wonder if he ever heard  about the FEMA meltdown which was under Bush’s administration when he was talking about the bureaucratic red tape that halted rescue efforts. He said the lesson learned was that the government can’t do anything in a correct and orderly manor. I think he may be right but he is omitting one thing from that statement: A REPUBLICAN government failed and just because they did does not mean at all that the Obama administration is going to do things like they did the last 8 years. And the talk about the universal health care plan the Republicans have did not make any sense. If they had a plan and it is so awesome then where was it? They had control of both parts of congress and also the white house yet they didn’t bother to ever bring up the matter let alone pass anything remotely resembling universal health care. His response came across extremely patronizing. All the 80’s style “you are special” expressions will not get your party back into the country’s favor. He does represent the spirit of his party but unfortunately that spirit is out of step with the times.

Why Your Team Didn’t Win The Super Bowl – NFC

Everyone has a team that they are loyal towards and most fans had their dreams crushed at some point this season. Some teams had a tough defeat in the playoffs and some teams never really had any shot at the Super Bowl. It was a long season with many ups and downs and some team’s seasons could have been salvaged by one single play that didn’t go their way or a string of bad GM decisions. Here are the reasons why your NFC team didn’t win the Super Bowl.

Arizona Cardinals – They thought the Super Bowl was only 58 minutes long. I can’t imagine how it feel to be Kurt Warner. He has been on the sideline while two, almost all three, of his Super Bowls were lost.

Atlanta Falcons – They were just happy to make the playoffs, but when they got there, they didn’t give Arizona any credit. The Falcons should be good for years, they won’t make this mistake again.

Carolina Panthers – They thought that Jake Delhomme was good enough to still be their quarterback. Like the Falcons mistake, they probably won’t make this mistake again.

Chicago Bears – They depend on a quarterback who thinks a neckbeard is fashionable. I know Rex Grossman isn’t any better, but they had a chance to trade for Donavon McNabb at some point last off-season and didn’t do it.

Dallas Cowboys – Tony Romo met Jessica Simpson. I know this didn’t happen this season, but seems like all the tabloid coverage has really hurt his on-field ability to win games.

Detroit Lions – Barry Sanders retired. It has been that long since the words Lions and playoffs have been in the sentence or paragraph.

Green Bay Packers – They let the Brett Favre saga drag on for too long. All the drama that surrounded the Packers was counter-productive to their growth as a team.

Minnesota Vikings – They have no other offense weapons other than Adrian Peterson. I know Visanthe Shiancoe has a weapon, but we can’t talk about that on this blog.

New Orleans Saints – They drafted Reggie Bush. That draft choice should have went towards a defensive player, in hindsight, but aren’t we all a genius when hindsight is in involved?

New York Giants – Plaxico Burress bought a gun. If Plax didn’t shoot himself, I’m sure that they would have beat the Eagles in the playoffs. Hixon couldn’t handle the burden of being the #1 receiver.

Philadelphia Eagles – Donovan McNabb’s conditioning. It is a trend that McNabb becomes gassed as the game goes on. He can’t finish games and needs to lose the extra 20 pounds of Chunky Soup weight he has put on over the last few seasons.

San Francisco 49ers – Mike Nolan was their coach at the beginning of the year. Mike Singletary proved his worth as a coach and will be the best sound bite in the NFL over the next few years.

Seattle Seahawks – Their entire offense was in the hospital by Week 3. Not only was their entire receiving squad on injury report, but Matt Hasselbeck barely played.

St. Louis Rams – Orlando Pace retired. Pace was a major reason for all the success the Rams had during their prime. He kept the quarterback upright and once he was gone, Bulger was eating more grass than a cow.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The team was distracted by Jeff Garcia’s hot wife. I can’t think of any real reason why they didn’t even make the playoffs, but they collapsed the last few weeks of the season. Jon Gruden wished he knew the reason too, he may still have his job.

Washington Redskins – They hired Jim Zorn. The first game of the year, they were killed by the Giants, then they went on a run, but then they hit a wall. Zorn is probably the least qualified to be a head coach and his play-calling was mind-boggling at times.

Why Your Team Didn’t Win The Super Bowl – AFC

Everyone has a team that they are loyal towards and most fans had their dreams crushed at some point this season. Some teams had a tough defeat in the playoffs and some teams never really had any shot at the Super Bowl. It was a long season with many ups and downs and some team’s seasons could have been salvaged by one single play that didn’t go their way or a string of bad GM decisions. Here are the reasons why your AFC team didn’t win the Super Bowl.

Baltimore Ravens – Their offsense was too erratic and relied solely on their running game to score points. Joe Flacco will end up being a good NFL quarterback, but they just asked too much of him in his rookie season.

Buffalo Bills – They drafted Trent Edwards. Edwards spent most of his college career injured and can’t seem to stay healthy.

Cincinnati Bengals – Carson Palmer’s injury made the Bengals regress in 2008. I’m not sure if they would have been a playoff team if Palmer stayed healthy, but his injury made them look like amateurs.

Cleveland Browns – Romeo Crennel was their head coach. I know that most of the Browns recent draft picks haven’t lived up to the hype, but a coaching change will do them well.

Denver Broncos – A Pop Warner team could pass on their secondary. A team with Dre Bly and Champ Bailey shouldn’t be this bad.

Houston Texans – They are in the same division as the Colts and Titans. If doesn’t help their record or confidence when you face two of the best teams twice a year.

Indianapolis Colts -They can’t beat the Chargers in the post-season. They had a long winning streak going into the playoffs, but San Diego has their number.

Jacksonville Jaguars – They let Marcus Stroud leave. The Jaguars defense wasn’t the same without Stroud clogging the running lanes.

Kansas City Chiefs – I’m not sure if they have rebounded from being on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” two years ago. An injury to Larry Johnson didn’t help, but their season was derailed long before training camp.

Miami Dolphins – Having Chad Pennington as their quarterback finally caught up to them. Pennington may have had a much better season than expected, but he can only get you so far in this league and the first round of the playoffs seems to be the limit.

New England Patriots – This one is easy, Tom Brady’s knee. Brady is the one player on the Patriots that they couldn’t overcome losing. Matt Casell did a spectacular job, but he wasn’t Tom Brady.

New York Jets – They traded for Brett Favre. I don’t think the Jets would have won the Super Bowl with or with Favre, but he didn’t help the cause.

Oakland Raiders – Rich Gannon retired. I could have chosen many reasons for this, but seems like all their problems started a few years ago when their team got really old within a few months of going to the Super Bowl.

San Diego Chargers – They didn’t retain Lorenzo Neal. LaDainian Tomlinson needs a fullback to lead the way for him. Jacob Hester didn’t cut it and Tomlinson had one of his worst years.

Tennessee Titans – They stomped on the towel. I do believe in karma and Big Fat Lendale White didn’t earn the Titans any extra points by stomping on a Terrible Towel.

Why Manti Te’o Signed With Notre Dame

Manti Te’o, who is considered to be the best defensive recruiting prospect, decided that he will attened the University of Notre Dame. This is a huge shock to many experts who had him going to either USC or UCLA. There are many reasons why Te’o should have signed with either of those Pac-10 schools, but I will explain one main reason why Manti Te’o signed on to wear a golden helmet during his college career.

There are so many reasons why a top defensive recruit wouldn’t choose Notre Dame, especially a guy like Manti Te’o. For starters, he is a devoted Mormon and Notre Dame is one of the large Catholic universities in the U.S. He is so devoted that he wants to go mission work when he turns 19, which could delay his arrival to Notre Dame. Also, Notre Dame hasn’t had a decent defense since Chris Zorich and Bobby Taylor were in college. And lastly, Notre Dame seemed to be inches away from firing Charlie Weis and he could be playing for a different coach by the time he is finished with his college career. Those are all huge reasons why Te’o shouldn’t have signed with the Irish, but yet he did.

Going into last season, the Irish expected to make some sort of bowl game by the end of the year. I’m not sure if they were thinking that they would end up playing Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl, but it could have been a blessing. Manti Te’o is from Hawaii and I’m 100% sure that he watched the Hawaii Bowl very closely. The Irish looked very polished and made easy work of the Rainbow Warriors, it could be considered that it was their best overall team goal. If the Irish didn’t up in the Hawaii Bowl or any bowl game period, they wouldn’t have had a shot at Te’o.

USC should have snatched Te’o up very easily. They have a long lineage of Pacific-Rim descendants have very good careers as a Trojan. Troy Polamalu, Junior Seau, and most recently, Rey Maualuga, to name a few, played in huge games and made the USC program what it is today. One negative about playing at USC is that they are extremely stacked at every position. Te’o probably wouldn’t have had any trouble breaking into the starting line-up, but at Notre Dame he could start as a freshman.

Congratulations to Notre Dame for landing a top defensive recruit. This speaks a lot about the recruiting skills of Charlie Weis and proves that the Golden Dome can still attract top-flight athletes. If Te’o ends up on campus next season, it could catapult the Irish into a top-25 ranking at some point next season. They were a very young team last year and most of their starters will be back next year. Expect big things in South Bend in 2009, even if they do have two Golic boys.

J.J.Redick To Pacers?

J.J. Redick seems to be a little lost in the backcourt of the Orlando Magic. He has started five games this season, but when he came into the NBA he didn’t expect to be averaging roughly 5 points a game in his best season. It makes sense for both teams for the Orlando Magic to trade J.J. Redick to the Indiana Pacers for Jamaal Tinsley. Neither of these players are being used by their team properly and since Jameer Nelson may be lost for the season, it makes sense for the Magic.

I thought about this post before the Magic pulled a trigger on a trade that sent Keith Bogans to Milwaukee for Tyronn Lue. I believe my trade makes much more sense for Orlando and could possibly still happen. Lue had his lone moment of glory as a member of the Lakers when he basically shutdown Allen Iverson in the NBA Finals all by himself. Lue signed a huge free agent contact that following season and has never been the same. Orlando will still need to fill the void that Nelson left and could still possibly make a trade to acquire a much better point guard.

A trade for Jamaal Tinsley makes sense for Orlando, since the Pacers have given him the “Starbury” treatment since the end of last season. He hasn’t even been allowed to be with the Pacers all season and they ever went as far as removing his name off of his locker. In order to trade Tinsley to the Magic, the Pacers would need to offset the contracts. If the Magic would put Redick in the package, the Pacers would probably have to take the bad contract of Brian Cook and might possibly have to send Roy Hibbert. Another possibility would be that the Pacers would pay a large amount of Tinsley’s contract and send him to the Magic for either Redick alone or maybe just a 2nd round draft pick.

As it stands right now, the Pacers are needing to rid themselves of Tinsley. He has had off-court troubles since the beginning of his career. At this point, the Pacers will take anything they can get for him and the Magic and the rest of the league probably knows that. The J.J. Redick trade may not happen for that reason, but I believe it makes sense for both sides. The Magic need a true point guard with scoring ability and the Pacers need a Jason Kapono-type of shooter to help free up Granger and Dunleavy, plus it would help fill out their team with yet another “white boy.”

Obama makes a limit on executive pay. Rich people sad.

Uh oh. Obama’s done it now. I can feel society just crumble to dust now that the executive’s jobs don’t  pay what they used to. I mean how the hell are they going to be able to afford their dick wagging contest stuff now? Crap where is all that extra money going to now? Hmmmm. Thinking about it. Wait I got it! If they have extra money maybe they can start paying the lower classes their share now. Since we do all the work. I mean I haven’t seen this guy as a greeter in my store.
