Kevin Love Wins ‘Whitest White NBA Player’ Award

Kevin-Love-White-Guy-AwardI read this story and I knew it needed mention on the site.

In a preseason survey of all 30 NBA general managers, the NBA asks an odd question…but one they have asked many times previously.

“Which player makes the most of limited natural ability?”

Oh yes, that’s a real question. That sounds like something we would ask an NBA GM on a podcast.

Well, Kevin Love was the overwhelming answer to that question (he also won last preseason). He has actually won this distinction numerous times. Who are some of the players who also received votes in for this year’s ‘most unathletic, productive NBA player’ award? We list some of the names…and yes, you will not be shocked by the players who landed on this list.

NBA: Top 10 Best White Boy Dunks Ever

Josh+McRoberts+Dunk+NBA+White+BoyThe movie “White Men Can’t Jump” didn’t help the stereotype that most white guys are un-athletic.I have had this blog for a few years and I cannot believe that I have never thought of posting ‘white guy slam dunk’ videos. There have been a lot of pale NBA players have graced us with fantastic dunks. Tom Chambers and Rex Chapman had awesome dunks and helped pave the way for Brent Barry to win the Slam Dunk contest…but let’s not fool anyone, the stereotype still exists.

I scoured YouTube in search of the best videos of white boys throwing it down in the NBA. I picked a few iconic dunks and a couple that have happened recently. I excluded many amazing dunks that happened in college, because I could make a top 50 post with those.

Here’s the ten best videos of “white guys dunking in the NBA”…I added a special video at the end. Continue reading

America’s White Boy: The Podcast?

Hey guys,

I know what you’re thinking…did he just wake up from his New Year’s hangover? Well, sort of.

I’ve been working on launching a podcast. I’ve never worked with audio equipment at this level before, so it has been a learning experience. I’m very thankful my dog is not a parrot. He would have learned so many colorful words.

Before I ask you guys to email BobbyMcRib (at) Gmail or tweet me @Sweetbob, I want to explain what I want to accomplish with the podcast.

The podcast will be a mix between sports and pop culture. I have a lot of friends/acquaintances/colleagues who cover sports or music for a living. I want to share them with the world along with some of the characters I’ve met in my life. I’d feel very selfish if I didn’t share them with the world. The target demographic will be male 18-49, but I don’t want to be overtly chauvinistic. The podcast will be humorous, but I want to keep an option open to interview interesting people, even if the goal is to only inform.

Wait, if I have a bikini model on the podcast, will that help my iTunes podcast algorithm rank? No? Damn.

If you have any ideas, topics, sponsorship inquiries or advice, please shoot me an email or tweet. This podcast idea has been on my mind for a long time. It has taken the success of this blog (and experience gained from writing for print mags and other websites) to give me the confidence to pursue this. The first episode’s release date is TBD, but it will be here sooner than you know.

Speaking of Sooners…Hey, Oklahoma benchwarmers, are you excited for “The America’s White Boy Podcast”?

Calm down, fellas! You’re going to injure your beer pong arm.

An Attempt To Embrace My New Hometown

I moved to Columbus, Ohio from Fort Wayne, Indiana nearly four years, so I guess this isn’t a “new” place for me anymore. I’m considering changes to the site, small ones actually, you may not even notice. I just wanted to explain why this change may happen and what you may see on the site in the near future. For my friends back in Indiana, don’t worry, I still love Larry Bird and can’t watch the end of “Hoosiers” or “Rudy” without crying.

I started this site over 2 1/2 years ago as a platform to keep my writing skills fresh and dive into a new genre. I have always been a huge sports fan and combine that with my snarky and cynical attitude, I guess starting a sports blog was right up my alley. My past writing experience was just in college in Journalism and English classes and I spent nearly seven years as a music journalist. “America’s White Boy” didn’t turn into a site that focused strictly on sports content, I add a lot of music posts on here. I know both worlds of sports and music, so why not give them both to my readers. 2 1/2 years ago, I didn’t know where I would be from year to year, I was still trying to settle down in a city where I felt comfortable. I believe that I have found that place here in Columbus…at least for the foreseeable future.

The change to the site will be that I am going to be adding much more local Ohio content and national music acts to the site. The change won’t be extreme and it isn’t a transition that will eventually make this into a site like Waiting For Next Year or Cleveland Frowns. I am a fan of the Columbus Blue Jackets and I follow Ohio State sports, so expect a lot of that to be added. Don’t worry about me, I still love the Chicago Cubs, Indiana Pacers, and Indianapolis Colts, you can’t take those loves away from me. Since I know a lot about the teams I am a fan of, and clearly have passionate things to say about them, that content will still be here.

I have researched my traffic numbers and my site does have better numbers in the Midwest and East Coast than any other part of the country. I should take this time and say something mean about the West Coast, like the Lakers are soft or that USC cheats, but I’ll let your imagination do that.

Well, today is the start of the NFL season, so expect a possible Cleveland Browns or Cincinnati Bengals post at some point today. If I post anything positive about Jake Delhomme, please call my mother, because there is no way I would ever do that unless these Ohio savages kidnap and torture me.

I heart my new hometown.

All White Boy Fantasy Football Team

Since our name is “America’s White Boy” we embrace white boys representing in professional sports. I use the term “white boy” meaning guys who are “country” and kind of don’t fit into the normal stereotypes of being a cocky, big city athlete. Who will make the pasty, pale, All-White Boy Fantasy Football Team? Check it out.

This team is going to be realistic, so for example, I won’t have Tom Brady and Peyton Manning on the team, since you wouldn’t be able to get both of those players in a draft. Plus, Tom Brady is too city and any man who can land Gisele Bundchen, doesn’t fit our definition of a “white boy.” Here is the list… Continue reading

Josh McRoberts Is Still In The NBA?

As I predicted, kind of, the Pacers would get another white boy on the team by the end of the night. I predicted that it would either be Kosta Koufos or Joe Alexander, but it turns out to be Josh McRoberts. Yep, the same McRoberts that should have went pro out of high school, but went to Duke and collected dust for two years and watched his draft stock plummet. He spent last season with Portland, but mostly on their D-League team roster.

The Pacers obtained McRoberts as a “throw-in” with the Jerryd Bayless/Ike Diogu for Jarret Jack/Brandon Rush trade. I didn’t find out that McRoberts was even involved until I was looking around on the internet and his name was mentioned last.

Josh McRoberts “could” end up being an average player in the NBA, but I am not sure where he will play. He still has one more season of D-League eligibility left, that’s always an option I guess. He grew up in Indianapolis and played at Carmel High School, where he won basically every National Player Of The Year awards you can win. One could assume that with him coming back home, he might be relaxed and play up to his potential.

He has been linked, in the past, with Lauren Conrad from “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills” fame. She is in the picture above with him, but she was too ashamed to be photographed. Sadly, I would also use something to cover my face if I were to ever be in a photograph with Mr. McRoberts…ask me this time next year and I could change my opinion.

O’Neal Traded To Toronto – A Pacer Fan Critique

Jermaine O’Neal was traded to the Toronto Raptors for T.J. Ford and the #17 pick in the NBA Draft tomorrow night. O’Neal has been asking for a trade since Isiah Thomas was fired as the Pacers head coach. Last off-season a rumor swirled that he was going to the Lakers for either Lamar Odom or Andrew Bynum, but the Pacers wanted both of them and the Lakers didn’t move forward with the trade. The trade with Toronto could be a good thing for the Pacers, only if Ford stays healthy and the player selected at #17 can step in right away and help the troubled franchise.

Jermaine O’Neal hasn’t been the same since he was involved in the “Palace Brawl” a few seasons ago. After he served his suspension, he wasn’t the same on the court for the rest of that season and last couple years he has been out with various injuries. He is due to make 20+ million each of the next two seasons and the Pacers were smart to make a move for a point guard. Indiana needed to either make a move and trade for a point guard or draft a point guard (who would have either been D.J. Augustin or Russel Westbrook). Augustin is in the same mold as their current point guard Jamaal Tinsley, he can make plays, but either have a consistent jumpshot, same could be said for Ford. The different between Tinsley and Ford/Augustin is that they haven’t been a team disruption off the court. Tinsley will still end up on the team ’cause he has a large salary, but with Ford starting and Tinsley coming off the bench, their backcourt could be pretty nice.

On the Toronto side of this, you have a GM in Colangelo that is used to winning. He plays a faster style of basketball and Jose Calderon seems like a better fit at point guard. The front court of Chris Bosh and Jermaine O’Neal will give the Eastern Conference a migraine. Toronto takes on a huge contract for the next two seasons, but with the addition of O’Neal, if he stays healthy, can cement a playoff spot next season.

I’m not defending Larry Bird as team president, but I have faith that the moves he is making is going to eventually make sense. I admit that the Harrington/Jackson to Golden State for Murphy/Dunleavy still makes no sense, but Jackson was a distraction and they had to package Harrington with him to send him packing.

The color barrier may be broken this year if the Pacers pick another white guy with the #11 or #17 picks tomorrow. I think that Joe Alexander or Kosta Koufos are on their radar, but it isn’t certain that Alexander will be there at #11 or Koufos will be there at #17. If they pick either one, they could actually put a five white guys on the floor at once. Jeff Foster, Travis Diener, Troy Murphy, Mike Dunleavy, and either one of the draft picks. As “America’s White Boy,” it would be a proud moment in white boy history. I am not sure what is up with Bird, but before he came in, the only white boy on the team was either Rik Smits or Detlef Schrempf (Austin Croshere was around, but I choose not to remember his tenure). Larry Bird is down with the white boy and I my friend, am down with Bird.
