I went on a rant in last month’s Hipster Music Playlist post. I explained how much I dislike bands using low-fi recording/mixing tricks. It just feels disingenuous, especially when many of today’s bands want to make something ‘real’.

Well, I just want to clear up something. I don’t expect every recording to be as clean as a pop record, but you can just tell when a band is trying to ‘manufacture’ grime on a record. Be honest who you are and your sound will always be authentic.

I didn’t post a Hipster Music Playlist last month because I ran into a wall. Not literally, but I just spent way too much time trying to pick 15 songs I enjoyed enough to share with you guys. There’s a trend going on in indie music that I do not enjoy. Many bands are using low-fi recording and mixing on their tracks. I understand if you’re broke and can’t afford quality equipment, but with DIY recording programs being dirt cheap these days, it comes off as disingenuous. I do not enjoy bands trying to fake a grainy sound. Here’s a tip, if your vocalist sounds like they are singing through a late-90’s PC microphone, you’re doing it wrong.

It’s the last month of 2014 (that was weird to type). It was a pretty memorable year in music, but the only album to exceed one million albums sold was Taylor Swift’s new album (sorry music industry). It’s unfortunate because a ton of awesome music was released. People intake music in different ways, but mostly it’s via torrent.
