Song Of The Day – Escape The Fate (Not Good Enough)

Just by looking at a picture of Escape The Fate, one could come to a conclusion that they are a Motley Crue cover band. Their style is even more over-the-top than Avenged Sevenfold’s take on 80’s hair/fashion. Their album “Dying Is Your Latest Fashion” merges a few different genres. Some the tracks are hardcore, but about half of the record sounds pop-punk-screamo. It’s a good album if you are into any of those genres.

They need to buy pants a few sizes larger, I would probably feel more comfortable watching their videos. Their ‘boys’ must be screaming with every step they take.

Song Of The Day – The Format (She Doesn’t Get It)

The Format’s popularity has been rising over the past two years. Their first album, “Interventions and Lullabies,” came out in 2003. You can blame it on bad timing, but their label, Elektra, went out of business around that same time. Without the support of their label, they had minimal success with their debut album.

I saw them back in 2004 when they toured with Yellowcard. I thought they were very good, but at the time I had never heard of them and didn’t pay as much attention to them as I should have. It wasn’t too long after that concert that I picked up their debut album and gave it my full attention. Once it entered into my cd player, it stayed there for months.

“Dog Problems” is their latest album. They are now considered an indie band and put out their album through their management company, Nettwerk. Even with this unconventional idea, they have found greater success with “Dog Problems.” I’m sure if you give The Format a chance, you will be a fan.

Song Of The Day – Millencolin (Detox)

I’ve been a fan of Millencolin since I saw them play at Warped Tour in 2000. I went to the Chicago stop on the tour and they were the first band we saw there and my jaw hit the ground. They are originally from Sweden, but grew up listening to American punk rock while they skateboarded. Millencolin are known for their catchy hooks and Nikola Sarcevic’s smooth voice. Sarcevic has recently put out two solo albums that are great. He went out on a limb with a singer/songwriter folk style, but they are both a must-have in your collection.

I have had email correspondence with Sarcevic in the past. I know he really big into chess. He still currently lives in Sweden, but tours with Millencolin frequently in the U.S. Their new cd, “Machine 15,” comes out in mid-May.

Song Of The Day – Serj Tankian (Sky Is Over)


I have had the opportunity to talk with Serj Tankian on a couple of occasions. I had a music website for a few years and Serj was probably the most affluent speaker that I interviewed. He was so knowledgeable about world politics. He was very passionate about having the U.S. acknowledge the Armenian Genocide, in which a large number of people of Armenian descent were killed in Turkey around World War II. He lost people in his family and many of Armenians here in the U.S. do no know anyone in their family older than their own parents.

I admit that one of my interviews with Serj was never released online. I was so busy with college that I used one of the interviews strictly for a journalism assignment. I figured that I had connections and I wanted a good grade, so I called in a few favors and interviewed Serj for an assignment. He had a System Of A Down album set to release and was doing rounds of interviews. I ended up with an ‘A’ on the article, still not sure if my professor ended up buying System Of A Down – “Toxicity.” She should have, it was probably the best rock album released that year.

The song of the day is Serj Tankian’s “Sky Is Over.” The video is pretty cool, plus it has a political theme about everyday civilization being over as we know it.

Song Of The Day – Cartel (I Will Hide Myself Away)

In hopes of incorporating sports, music, and pop culture into this blog, I will try and post a “Song Of The Day.” Cartel is band that was on the verge of being over-exposed with the horrible “Band In A Bubble” tv series on MTV. They recorded an album in 30 days in a bubble-like space in NYC. “I Will Hide Myself Away” is a song they recorded during that time. Their overall album sales haven’t been that stellar, despite the hype from the series. Danity Kane sold 250,000 copies this week from being on “Making The Band” and Cartel couldn’t get the MTV “bump.” The probably either need to add some hot girls or have Diddy keep repeating “No Bitchass-ness” on a track.
