2019 NFL Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 9

ryan tannehill dottedWe are back to having four teams on bye this week. We will be without the Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Rams and the Atlanta Falcons players.

There are a number of backup quarterbacks still starting this week. We will see one more now that the Broncos will sit Joe Flacco in favor of Brandon Allen. I would have mentioned the Bengals benching Andy Dalton for rookie Ryan Finley, but they are on bye this week.

Are the Titans a potential playoff contender with Ryan Tannehill under center?

Here is our Fantasy Football Sit/Start for Week 9 of the 2019 NFL season…and enjoy our awesome MS Paint masterpiece of QB Ryan Tannehill of the Tennessee Titans.

I want to explain what I mean by “sit” and “start.” Of course you are going to start some of the guys i say to bench this week, because you probably used high draft picks or a lot of money in an auction for them. My ‘sit’ players are guys I am just not completely sold that they will have good weeks. If you have a guy that you are on the fence about, maybe this will help you pick between the players.

START’EM

  • QB Ryan Tannehill (Tennessee Titans)Tannehill has been pretty darn good since taking over as the starter in Tennessee. He is 2-0 as the starter and has been moving the ball, something QB Marcus Mariota had trouble doing at times. The offense would just have too many three-and-outs. Tannehill faces the Panthers this week, a team teams have been able to throw on this year. He should have another near-300-yard game and throw a couple touchdowns. He’s not going to be a huge fantasy stud, but he will be a capable fill-in if you’re QB is out on bye or injured.
  • WR Chris Conley (Jacksonville Jaguars) – If you own WR Dede Westbrook, it would be smart to add Conley to your team. Westbrook injured his shoulder last game and his status is unclear this week. Even if Westbrook plays, Conley may still be a nice flex play as Jags QB Gardner Minshew is looking his way plenty.
  • RB Latavius Murray (New Orleans Saints) – It took Murray a handful of weeks to get his footing in the Saints offense. It also doesnt hurt that teams aren’t stacking the box as much now that QB Drew Brees is back under center. Murray should be a fantastic fantasy running back the rest of the season.
  • QB Jacoby Brissett (Indianapolis Colts) – Brissett may not have had a huge game against Denver, but he came out with the win. He faces a bad Steelers secondary this week and should have a much better week in fantasy. I expect the Colts wideouts to get plenty of targets.
  • Buffalo Bills Defense & Special Teams – The Bills defense is stout and will have a cupcake opponent with the Redskins coming to town. Buffalo should force some turnovers and limit Washington’s activity on the scoreboard. Buffalo and is fast and young, something the Redskins aren’t stocked with on offense.
  • RB Nick Chubb (Cleveland Browns) – If you own Chubb, you were already going to start him, but just in case there’s any question, you should definitely start him. Browns QB Baker Mayfield has been a turnover machine and head coach Freddie Kitchens will look to limit Mayfield’s liabilities. I expect Chubb to keep getting 20+ carries and a handful of targets this week against Denver.
  • WR Danny Amendola (Detroit Lions) – If you’re in a PPR league, Amendola should be a gem for you this week. He’s caught eight passes in back-to-back weeks since returning from injury. He could be a nice replacement for your bye flex or WR2.
  • TE Darren Fells (Houston Texans) – Fells is a favorite red zone target for QB Deshaun Watson. He caught two touchdowns passes last week against the Raiders. The Jaguars are decent against opposing tight ends, but if the Texans are in the red zone this week, Fells should be near the top of Watson’s check-downs. I think he’s worth a start if you’re in a pinch.
  • TE Jimmy Graham (Green Bay Packers) – Graham hasn’t really been a good fantasy tight end since his days in New Orleans. He’s being used more this year and has been a nice fill-in tight end in recent weeks. He faces the Chargers and should be a top-12 tight end this week.
  • Tennessee Titans Defense & Special Teams – The NFL has appeared to have figured out Panthers QB Kyle Allen. It took a few weeks, but Allen threw three interceptions and only had 158 passing yards against the Niners. San Francisco has a good defense, so maybe some of that was due to the increased skill level, but he looked really bad. He hasn’t looked great against any above average defense. The Titans are among that group and should do well against Allen this week.
  • RB Trey Edmunds (Pittsburgh Steelers) – Edmunds is the only healthy running back on the Steelers roster. Benny Snell and Jaylen Samuels have knee injuries and James Conner is dealing with a shoulder injury. I wouldn’t necessarily add him if you’re in a shallow league, but if you’re in a deeper league and your running backs are on bye, I’d maybe add Edmunds and keep an eye on the Steelers injury report.
  • WR Alshon Jeffery (Philadelphia Eagles) – Jeffery is the only receiver you want in Philly. He seems to be even more effective in big games. I would say this is a big game just due to both teams desperately needing a win. Philly QB Carson Wentz will look to get Jeffery the ball often this week.

SIT’EM

  • RB Jamaal Williams (Green Bay Packers) – Williams was given more touches than Aaron Jones in Week 6, but he hasn’t been used enough to be fantasy relevant since. I know he was a trendy flex play last week, but I don’t think he will be worth that spot against the Chargers.
  • WR Mohamed Sanu (New England Patriots) – We’ve seen this a dozen times, the Patriots sign/trade for a new wide receiver and the public goes out and adds said receiver like crazy…and that receiver doesn’t do much in the first week. I don’t think Sanu will be effective in that offense for a few weeks. I don’t think Sanu is worth a start right now.
  • QB Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns) – Mayfield is having a rough year for the Browns. Cleveland tried to limit risky throws and he was limited to throwing shallow passes against the Patriots. I think he will be stuck in that similar gameplan this week against an above average Broncos defense.
  • RB Ty Johnson (Detroit Lions) – Johnson was the Lions running back everyone went out to get when RB Kerryon Johnson landed on the IR (me included). The Lions ended up using a running back committee and three running backs split the carries. I would stay away from any of the Lions running back as they aren’t getting enough carries to be worth it.
  • WR Sammy Watkins (Kansas City Chiefs) – Watkins hasn’t done much in fantasy since his Week 1 outburst. Other wide receivers stepped up in WR Tyreek Hill’s absense and now that Hill is back, Watkins isn’t getting the type of deep targets he needs to be a fantasy stud. There are other receivers out there worth a start over Watskins.
  • RB Ronald Jones (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – The Bucs don’t run the ball enough to have a running back worth a start in fantasy. It doesn’t help that Jones splits the carries with RB Peyton Barber. Neither do much with their carries and I’d stay away from both.
  • TE Luke Wilson (Seattle Seahawks) – It appears that Seattle doesn’t have much faith in either Wilson or Jacob Hollister to fill injured Will Dissly’s role in the passing offense. Some thought that Wilson was going get the targets Dissly received, but it just didn’t happen. I’d stay away from the Seahawks tight ends.
  • Minnesota Vikings Defense & Special Teams – The Vikings face the Chiefs and there’s still an outside shot that QB Patrick Mahomes could play this week. Minnesota’s pass defense is great, but I wouldn’t start any defense if there’s a chance Mahomes could face them.
  • QB Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens) – I know Jackson has been a stud in fantasy this year. He faces the Patriots this week and I don’t have much faith in him surviving. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will force Jackson to throw and I don’t trust his arm enough to have a big game against New England.
  • WR Robby Anderson (New York Jets) – I’ve listed Anderson in this section plenty times over the last two years. He’s an all-or-nothing receiver and is coming off bad performances against the Patriots and Jaguars. He will have an easier task against the Dolphins, but he’s too risky of a play for me.
