Guest Post: Should Ballparks Move in Outfield Walls?

I love being able to having different voices on this blog. It enhances what we are trying to do, to give interesting takes on sports and entertainment. Rebecca Wilcox is the latest person to guest blog on our site. Her take on major league ballparks is an opinion that we both share.

She takes aim at PETCO Park, the new Marlins’ stadium, and Comerica Park. She points out how a team could benefit and gives statistics to back up her opinion.

I know you will enjoy her take. Do you agree with her opinion? Let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment.

Over the past few years there have been several new Major League Baseball ballparks constructed and opened. The New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins and Miami Marlins have all opened new stadiums in the past few seasons. Some of these new stadiums have come under scrutiny due to how far from home plate the outfield fences were built. Some, however, have gained reputations as too home run friendly.

Ballparks, such as Comerica Park in Detroit, have shortened the fences, while others, such as Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia have lengthened theirs. Are Major league Baseball park fences not friendly to theHomeRun Monkey? If Giancarlo Stanton has his way, Marlins Park’s outfield fences would be moved in. “Balls that you feel should go out are barely scraping by,” Stanton told ESPN. Yet there has been only a slight decrease in home runs per game from the old stadium, 1.56 in 2011, to the new stadium, 1.24 through May 1, 2012.

Weather could have just as much a factor as the warmer more humid summer months tend to help balls travel further. Another notoriously difficult park for the HomeRun Monkey is PETCO Park in San Diego. With some of the deepest fences in MLB, PETCO Park has averaged at or near the bottom of MLB in home runs hit per game for four years running and in 2012 PETCO has by far the lowest count, averaging only one home run per game played in the stadium.

However another recently built stadium has seen a sharp rise in home runs, the new Yankee Stadium. In 2008, the last year the Yankees played in old Yankee Stadium, hitters averaged 1.98 home runs per game. That average leapt by almost a full point, to 2.93, in the first year of operations at new Yankee Stadium. So far this year Yankee Stadium is by far the most home run hitter friendly park with an average of 2.95 dingers per game. It seems to stand to reason that shorter fences make for more home runs.

The top ten stadiums with the shortest fence dimensions in right and left fields are among the top 15 stadiums each year in home runs per game. However, other factors do contribute to those numbers. Indoor versus outdoor stadium, number of power hitters on the home team, number of slowpitch pitchers versus fireballers faced are all factors that need to be considered. However, empirical evidence certainly seems to support Mr. Stanton’s position.

Multiple People Shot After Thunder Win Series

The Seattle Supersonics were moved to Oklahoma City a few years ago. This was the first time that their team reached the Western Conference Finals…but none of that is important anymore. After the Thunder beat the Lakers, shots were fired and some rioting occurred. So far, many are injured from gunshot wounds, but no fatalities have been announced.

Rioting after WINNING a sporting event is the most moronic thing a fanbase/city could do.

I will keep updating this blog post as more information spills in about this horrible tragedy in OKC.

As many as eight people were wounded by gunfire shortly after the Oklahoma City Thunder game Monday night. NewsOK.com reported that the victims are still being located and turning up at hospitals. Two people are in police custody in connection with the shooting, police said. As of 3:200am EST, no one has been announced as a shooter.

As of this moment, police said that multiple people were shot downtown shortly after the Thunder game let out. Before midnight, another round of shorts were fired near Mickey Mantle Drive. The shooting could have started less than five minutes after the game ended.

The injuries that have been announced have yet to claim a life. One person was shot in the back, another in the upper arm and a third in the hand. There are also reports that a pregnant lady was kicked during the melee. Victims are still turning up to hospitals.

Oklahoma City police Capt. Lisa Camacho said that two suspected shooters are in custody at the Bricktown Harkins Theater.

NewsOK.com have interviewed some eye witnesses and they claim that this was not the first time this has happened. After Game 2, a witness said that traffic was backlogged because of fights breaking out.

I will never understand why cities riot after winning a sporting event. Vancouver’s riot after last year’s Stanley Cup loss was bad, but it would have been worse if they actually won. Let’s end the stupidity and celebrate responsibly and watch out for one another.

This is amateur video of the scene after the Thunder game.

Tyler Maxwell, one of NewsOK.coms’s eyewitnesses, summed everything up perfectly. He said, “The playoffs are (good) for our city but they’re starting to bring violence…I can’t imagine what would happen if this was the NBA Finals.” Let’s hope that the city has extra police force on duty when the Thunder hosts the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.

2012 Maxim Hot 100 List

Maxim released its annual “Hot 100” list this afternoon. If it usually filled with the usual suspects (Scarlett Johansson, Megan Fox, etc), but they have been known to add in a few up & coming starlets.

Maxim decided to play around with the list this year. They included a man, a cartoon female, and even an accused murderer. I know that this list isn’t exactly the BCS standings, but I found very weird.

See who made the list this year and who didn’t. A few ladies from Mad Men didn’t make the cut and a certain lady who’s currently shacking up with Kanye West. I can’t believe that a publication put out a list with 100 females and didn’t include one Kardashian. I finally have hope in humanity! Continue reading

Untappd: "Foursquare for Drunks"

We are living in a world where there’s an application for everything. It was only a matter of time that beer lovers would start developing useful applications. Untappd is a mobile-based phone and web application that lets you “check-in” beers that you are drinking, like Foursquare. They borrow Foursquare’s API mapping, so you can also check-in to the bar where you are drinking your beer. It was released to the public in late October 2010 and has already surpassed two-million check-ins. I use it often and here’s my account.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Untappd’s co-founder Greg Avola. He talks about his app and he even drops a potential pick-up line to use on the ladies.

After being a “Mobile Web-only” application for nearly a year, they expanded their product to include an iPhone and Android app. Avola said “user rate has increased about 200% on a daily basis.” He also added, “The download and sign-up rate have been insane and we are really humbled.” Avola started the company with Tim Mather after he had the initial idea of extending the check-in activity. Currently Untappd is a three man operation with the acquisition of RedPint in February, they added John Vajda as Product Manager.

Now that we got some of the nerd talk out of the way, this application is pretty sweet. You earn badges for various things, just like Foursquare. The developers at Untappd are constantly upgrading and adding new badges, so there’s always something going on when you check-in. The badges range from a “St. Patty’s Day” badge if you check in on St. Patty’s Day to “Beer Connoisseur” badge when you drink five different beers from five different countries. You earn a “Newbie” badge with your first check-in, so you’re off earning badges from the first day. Like many other applications, Untappd can be integrated with your Facebook and Twitter accounts, if you choose.

Anyone who uses Untappd will increase their knowledge of beer within the first few check-ins. The application recommends beers that you might like based on your previous check-ins. This is very handy for those wanting to try new beers within the same beer class. Here’s an example: if you check-in with a Southern Tier 2XIPA, the recommendations will be other IPAs. If you want to try something different, you can just search for beers or look at some of the recent check-ins from your friends. The rating system and comments will help you decide if you want to try the beers. Avola wants to do more with individual breweries and add brewery specific badges like he has done with Dogfish head and Karl Strauss in the past.

Your friend feed on Untappd will certainly leave you with “beer envy,” especially if you have friends in other states. Craft beer breweries are popping up all of the time and their distribution is usually regional. Avola, who currently resides in New York City, even admits that he suffers from “beer envy.” He sees friends checking in beers from New Belgium Brewery and Russian River Brewery. Those breweries do not distribute to Avola’s New York City area.

Knowledgeable beer drinkers are the key to Untappd’s success. The more people who take the time and rate or comment on the beers, the more useful the application is to everyone. Untappd is not just for newbies looking to learn more about beer, it is useful for those who already know a lot about it. You can chat and communicate with other beer lovers around the world. One of the biggest compliments that Avola has received was actually his goal for the application. “People are starting to branch out and try new beers & venues. That’s the whole point of Untappd, to allow users to expand their palate and try different things.” He has even noticed people checking into beers at one of his favorite bars in NYC and it made his night.

Avola hinted that you can use Untappd as a pickup line at bars. He admits that one of his friends uses it successfully. “One of my single friends always tries to start a conversation with girls and uses, “Have You heard of Untappd?” It’s quite funny.” So, if you see a pretty lady at the bar using Untappd, you have a solid icebreaker. You’re welcome!

If you own a bar, I would spread the word of this application to your patrons. The customer will check-in to their beers at your location and their friends will see what is being sold there. It could lead to more business and help spread the word about your bar and what is currently in stock.

There are other beer applications on available for Android, iPhone, and Blackberry, but until there’s a new approach to them, Untappd will be the standard that all of them will be compared to. It is a free application, so save your money and start checking in beers. Even if you’re a college kid and Natural Ice is your beer of choice, there’s a badge for cheap beers.

Goodbye, Kerry Wood: A Cubs Fan’s Farewell

After this afternoon’s Chicago Cubs game against the Chicago White Sox, Kerry Wood officially retired from Major League baseball. He struck out the only batter he faced and went out with a bang.I have been a Cubs fan for all of my life and Wood will always be one of my favorite baseball players. In ’07, I had the privilege to see him pitch, but he wasn’t the dominant pitcher that once struck out 20 batters in a single game. Injuries derailed his playing career in the mid-2000s and was forced to pitch relief. He had success in that role, but he struggled this season with an ERA of 8.31 and twice as many walks as strikeouts.

How will will he be remembered, as a pitcher who once struck out 20 batters in a game or for the mystery of ‘what might have been?’

It is a shame that we will never know how dominant Wood could have been without his injuries. Wood and Mark Prior were going to be the Cubs version or Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, but both suffered career-threatening injuries. Wood was the last relic from the 2003 Chicago Cubs team who were only seven outs from making an improbable World Series appearance. The Bartman play occurred during that series, but most forget that it took place during Game 6 of the NLCS. Wood pitched in Game 7 and even hit a home run. He took the lost the game 9-6 and the Florida Marlins went on to win the World Series.

After the ’03 NLCS disaster, he was never the same. He had a sub-par ’04 season and then suffered injuries that kept him out for the majority of the following three seasons. He returned in late ’07, but came out of the bullpen as a precautionary measure. He turned into a capable relief pitcher. He even moved into the closer role in the ’08 and ’09 seasons, racked up 54 saves. He spent the next two seasons with the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees, but then returned to Chicago for a hometown discount.

Saying goodbye to Wood is a hard thing for me to do. I had to write a similar farewell to Peyton Manning post just two months ago. I am a huge fan of both teams. As a fan, it will be odd to not see either Wood or Manning on my team’s sideline.

Cubs fans always kept faith that Wood would return and contribute to the team. Prior was not so lucky. The fans lost patience with him much quicker. We all know that Wood will not be inducted into the Hall of Fame or even get his number retired. He will always been mentioned in Cubs folklore as a member of the ’03 team and for his amazing rookie season in ’98. He holds a special place in the hearts of Cubs fans.

You will see him around Chicago. He will be a special assistant in the Cubs organization and he has his foundation in the city. He is a devout Christian and does a lot of great things for the people of Chicago.

Wood finishes his career with a 86-75 record and 3.67 ERA. The two-time All-Star also struck out 1581 batters in 1379 innings.

He could have been the next Nolan Ryan or Steve Carlton, but he turned out to be the first Kerry Wood.

Top 10 YouTube Videos of White Guys Dunking in the NBA

The movie “White Men Can’t Jump” didn’t help the stereotype that most white guys are un-athletic.I have had this blog for a few years and I cannot believe that I have never thought of posting ‘white guy slam dunk’ videos. There have been a lot of pale NBA players have graced us with fantastic dunks. Tom Chambers and Rex Chapman had awesome dunks and helped pave the way for Brent Barry to win the Slam Dunk contest…but let’s not fool anyone, the stereotype still exists.

I scoured YouTube in search of the best videos of white boys throwing it down in the NBA. I picked a few iconic dunks and a couple that have happened recently. Sadly, I couldn’t find a good Rex Chapman dunk video. Here’s the top 10 YouTube videos of “white guys dunking in the NBA”…I added a special video at the end.

How Will The Jets Use Tim Tebow?

The biggest mystery of the upcoming season is how the New York Jets will use Tim Tebow. The team has been silent about their plans for the former Heisman trophy winner. A lot of information is being leaked out, but it is usually about Tebow and Mark Sanchez having dinner together. We all know that he is non-controversial and will not complain about being a backup to Sanchez. He is a great competitor and would love to start, but he will not admit that to the media.

New offensive coordinator, Tony Sparano, brought back the Wildcat formation when he was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Does Sparano have another innovative package to unleash in 2012?
Tim Tebow has not put on a helmet in four months, yet you hear his name everyday on ESPN. I’m sure that head coach Rex Ryan, quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh, and Sparano are getting tired of answering the same questions. It would be stupid of them to tell the media about the role that Tebow will play this season. Cavanaugh told the New York Daily News that Tebow is improving everyday. He is focused on having consistent footwork and improving his rhythm in the pocket.

In 2008, Sparano didn’t even hint about his Wildcat package until it was put into action against the New England Patriots. The Dolphins used the wildcat package six times and scored five touchdowns in that formation. They went on to beat New England 38-13 and won the AFC East division by going 11-5. The formation was duplicated across the league and defenses soon figured out a way to stop its effectiveness and it died out. Sparano will need to design a package that he can morph and mold, so defenses can’t catch up to it so quickly.

Last season, the Jets admitted that were missing the x-factor that Brad Smith brought to their team. He signed with the Buffalo Bills before last season. They ran an option called the “tigercat”, in which he mostly ran out of the backfield. Smith rarely passed the ball out of the package, which makes having Tebow a better fit for a similar package. Safeties started to play inside the box against Smith’s package, but Tebow is a better passer. The defense will not be able to predict as much, since Tebow will pass at a higher percentage and keep the defense guessing.

I have kept an eye on the Jets’ draft picks and free agent signings. All signs point towards the Jets using Tebow in an exaggerated option package. The biggest sign was drafting running back Terrance Ganaway in the sixth-round. His familiarity with an option-style offense he played at Baylor makes him a perfect running back to lineup in the backfield.

In Denver, Tebow was most effective in the red zone. If he was inside the ten line, he was automatic and scored touchdowns. Last year, the duo of Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson lacked the size to move piles. John Conner, aka The Terminator, is a fantastic blocking back, but he was even rendered useless in the red zone.

What would a “Tebow package” look like? The Jets have said that fans should expect Tebow to be in about 20 plays per game. Sparano has made this priority number one, so expect some elaborate plays from the Jets. Tebow could line up at either quarterback, fullback or tight end, expect the unexpected. He could benefit from playing in a triple option with Greene and Ganaway, which would take a lot of practice and precision from the offensive line to pull that off. He could even line up at a running back in a pro set. If that happens, he could flank out on a screen and be thrown a backwards pass. His down-the-field accuracy is sketchy at best, but he could get lucky and catch the secondary asleep.

We can only guess on how Tebow will be used on the Jets. He is an average quarterback, but if an offense is built around him, he could be great. The skills that he has as a quarterback are the skills that Sanchez lacks. Tebow is a strong leader and has intangibles that can turn a broken play into a first down. I’m not saying that that Jets don’t follow Sanchez, but Tebow has the kind of charm and passion for the game that very few players can match. They are both handling this situation pretty well so far, so they must have something under their sleeves.

A lot has to happen in order for the Jets to pull off this Tebow experiment. I am excited to watch the Jets this season and I have never said that in my life.

Lastly, I leave you with a little eye candy for the ladies…shirtless pictures of Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow. I have posted half-naked photos of Kate Upton, Brooklyn Decker, and Christina Hendricks, so I kind of owe them. (I apologize to the older demography for not posting any shirtless photos of Joe Namath)

Review: "Wherever I Wind Up" by R.A. Dickey

“No one grows up wanting to be a knuckleball pitcher,” is a quote from the memoir of New York Mets starting pitcher R.A. Dickey. Wherever I Wind Up (Penguin/Blue Rider Press) is a book about personal strength, redemption, and the discovery of one’s faith. Dickey was an English Literature major at the University of Tennessee and wrote the book with the help of New York Daily News  reporter Wayne Coffey.

Wherever I Wind Up starts off with the story of how his signing bonus of $810k was taken away after an evaluation found that he didn’t have an ulna collateral ligament. The doctors were baffled that he could even turn a doorknob without being in pain. The signing bonus was reduced to 75k and was sent to low-level minor league affiliate of the Texas Rangers. This was one the first obstacles that Dickey had to overcome. The book goes from self-deprecating humor to some dark moments of his life. Continue reading

Top 10 YouTube Videos of NBA Flops

Flopping is a hot button issue in today’s NBA. Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel was fined 15k for saying that the Miami Heat were the biggest flopping team in the league. David Stern was interviewed during Game 1 on the Pacers/Heat series and said that it needs to stop. Flopping was never an issue until Vlade Divac perfected the art of flopping in the late 1990s. It was frowned upon then, but over the years, it is now an accepted practice by most players. The best players in the league (Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul) all do it and I decided to give you some proof.

Here are the Top 10 best YouTube videos of NBA flops.

NBC Renews ‘Community’…Sort of?!

NBC was very busy yesterday. They decided the fate of most of their Thursday night lineup. ‘The Office’,’30 Rock’, ‘Parks and Recreation’, & ‘Community’ all were renewed, in the way Republican candidates endorse Mitt Romney…because they have to. NBC does not have much of a choice. Their network went from first in the ratings to fourth place, which is last among the big networks. They don’t have any shows to replace them right now and hope a few new shows emerge next season as Thursday night candidates.

Will ‘Community’ survive the overhaul that NBC plans to do in the 2012-13 television season? How will I get my Alison Brie fix, since I recently quit watching ‘Mad Men’?

I’m a huge fan of ‘Community’ since the middle of their first season. I didn’t know that the show was so good until a I went over to a friend’s house and he was watching it. The first episode I watched was their Christmas episode that was an homage to ‘Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer’. 90% of the episode was in claymation. It was a breath of fresh air in a television landscape that just recycles stale ideas.

The news slowly leaked out about NBC’s future plans. ‘Community’ will be renewed for thirteen episodes, with the rest of their season being left in limbo. The network ordered the same amount for ’30 Rock’ & ‘Parks and Recreation’, but but NBC announced that ’30 Rock’ will end the series after their thirteen episode order. The fate of ‘Parks and Recreation’ isn’t as gloomy, but it looks like that series will end as well. NBC did order full seasons of ‘The Office’ and ‘Parenthood’.It is likely that NBC could order nine more episodes of ‘Community’ to make a full fourth season. We can cross our fingers that the Peacock network will keep the critically-acclaimed show on for the fifth season.

If the show ends after its fourth season, it would make the show more realistic. Four years is the ideal amount of years that a student goes to college, but a fifth is plausible. This show was destined to last this length, because they would not want the show to end up like ‘90210’ or ‘Saved By The Bell’. The students on those shows must have flunked a year, since they lasted longer than four seasons.

A few reports have come out that Chevy Chase could be written out of the show. He is difficult to work with and has bashed the show publicly. He claims that the show is “not funny,” but he could just be jealous that he is not the show’s focus. He has a reputation of being difficult since he appeared on ‘Saturday Night Live’ in the 1970s.

NBC looks to keep ‘Parenthood’ on the air, but plans to cancel ‘Community’? What night of the week is that even on NBC? I know that it is another show that has low ratings and is beloved by critics. It has to cost more to produce than ‘Community’, but I could be wrong…since I’ve never watched an episode of ‘Parenthood.

I hope that Subway can save ‘Community’ like it extended the life of ‘Chuck’, another NBC show that I also enjoyed. You will still be able to see most of the cast in other projects on television and/or in concert. Donald Glover has a budding music career as Childish Gambino, Joel McHale has ‘The Soup’, and Brie has a recurring role on AMC’s ‘Mad Men’ as Pete Campbell’s wife.

Let’s hope that ‘Community’ will increase their ratings in the fall and forces NBC to keep the show on the air…#sixseasonsandamovie.

Could Columbus, Ohio Support an NBA Team?

The mayor of Columbus, Ohio, Michael B. Coleman, thinks that his city is ready for an NBA team. He sent a letter to the NBA Commissioner, David Stern, and wanted him to know that “Columbus should be on the league’s radar.” The city just finalized the public purchase of Nationwide Arena, which is the home of Columbus Blue Jackets, an NHL team. The Columbus Dispatch reported the letter today and adds some strong reasons why the city could support three professional teams, if you count the Columbus Crew, an MLS team.

Do you think Columbus could support an NBA team? Is it even the best option in its own state? We’ll dive deeper and look at teams that are in financial trouble and need to move. Continue reading
