Cover Song Month: Birdy – “1901”

I couldn’t do a month full of cover songs without including Birdy. She made a name for herself by covering Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love”.

She’s back covering Phoenix’s track, “1901”. I love how she deconstructs the melody and slows it down. Phoenix’s original is high-tempo, so a slowed-down version is very fresh.

Cover Song Month: Ed Sheeran feat. Passenger – “No Diggity”

You can’t have ‘Cover Song Month’ without indie musicians covering an old 90’s hip hop track, right?

Ed Sheeran is hot indie musician and Passenger is one of my personal favorites, his voice is amazing. They collaborated on “No Diggity” by Blackstreet…and it’s awesome.

Cover Song Month: Vampire Weekend – “Blurred Lines”

‘Cover Song Month’ is turning out to be one of my favorite series on the year.

“Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke and “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk share the title of ‘Song of the Summer.’ Many covers have popped up for both songs, but only two stand out. We posted a cover of “Get Lucky” by San Cisco earlier this month, but now it’s time to do the same with “Blurred Lines”.

Here is Vampire Weekend’s cover of “Blurred Lines”.

Cover Song Month: AFI – “Just Like Heaven”

I promised to limit myself to one cover of The Cure during ‘Cover Song Month’.

AFI is a talented band full of great guys. Not to name drop or anything, but I’ve met them on a few occasions. The best one was when I was trying to interview Simple Plan and the guys from AFI was in the same room poking fun at them for their height.

What makes AFI’s cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” great is that they did it in front of Robert Smith. They must have been crazy nervous before their performance.

Cover Song Month: Kishi Bashi – “With or Without You”

Kishi Bashi is one of the most original indie acts to come around in years. He’s a one man band. He uses loops he records on stage to his benefit. He is one my concert bucket list.

He covers U2’s “With or Without You” and it’s mind-blowing how he pulls it off.

Cover Song Month: The Postelles – “Ask”

If you’re an indie band, having a cover of a song by The Smiths or Morrissey is a must. The Postelles put their token cover of a song by The Smiths on YouTube.

Their version of “Ask” says true to the original, but thanks to today’s high-def recording equipment, it’s more clean.

Cover Song Month: San Cisco – “Get Lucky”

We’re big fans of San Cisco here on AmericasWhiteBoy.com. Their track “Awkward” appeared on our of our “Sweetbob’s HIpster Music Playlist” posts earlier this year.

Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” is the song of the summer and I’m sure San Cisco won’t be the last band to cover it, but it will definitely be one of the best when it’s all said and done.

(We dig the lady drummer.)

Cover Song Month: Jimmy Eat World – “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”

There are a million covers of Taylor Swift songs on the internet, but Jimmy Eat World’s cover tops them all.

I’ve been a fan of Jimmy Eat World since the late 90’s and their cover of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” sounds like it could have been on their “Clarity” album.

Cover Song Month: Josh Krajcik – “Folsom Prison Blues”

Josh Krajcik first came on the scene when he auditioned for “The X-Factor” in 2011. His audition went viral and ended up being the runner-up during the show’s first season in the U.S.

I first saw him play at Woodlands Tavern in Columbus, Ohio in 2009. I was surprised to see him on The X-Factor, but the guy can sing. Here’s his cover of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”.

Cover Song Month: Bad Rabbits – “Sextape”

This is not the first time Bad Rabbits appeared during “Cover Song Month”. They covered The Smashing Pumpkins track “1979” and we included it in last year’s feature.

This year, we’re featuring their cover of “Sextape” by Deftones. It’s one our favorite covers in recent memory.
