2021 NFL Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 9

We saw some head-scratching performances last week. Who would have thought Jets backup QB Mike White would put up Madden-like numbers against the Bengals?

The Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Washington Football Team are all out on bye this week.

There were a few major injuries last week that could have affected your fantasy team. You might be looking to replace Titans RB Derrick Henry or Raiders WR Henry Ruggs going forward.

Will Titans RB Adrian Peterson be worth a waive wire pickup?

Here is our Fantasy Football Sit/Start for Week 9 of the 2021 NFL season…and enjoy our awesome MS Paint masterpiece of QB Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers.

I want to explain what I mean by “sit” and “start.” Of course you are going to start some of the guys i say to bench this week, because you probably used high draft picks or a lot of money in an auction for them. My ‘sit’ players are guys I am just not completely sold that they will have good weeks. If you have a guy that you are on the fence about, maybe this will help you pick between the players.

START’EM

  • QB Jordan Love (Green Bay Packers) – Packers QB Aaron Rodgers tested positive for COVID-19, so Love will get the start. The Packers had a M.A.S.H. unit of wide receivers last week against the Cardinals and still got the win. It looks like they will all be back this week, which will help Love immensely on Sunday. The Chiefs do give up a couple big passing plays per game and Love will need to connect on a couple of those.
  • WR Cole Beasley (Buffalo Bills) – I put Beasley in this area last week and he racked up double-digit receptions and cracked 100 yards against the Dolphins. He has another great match-up this week against the Jaguars. I expect Beasley will get double-digit targets again.
  • TE C.J. Ozumah (Cincinnati Bengals) – Ozumah may not get targeted much in games, but he makes the most out of them. He has caught all but two of his targets this season. He is a red zone target as he has already caught five touchdowns. He should get some looks in the red zone against the Browns.
  • RB Kenneth Gainwell (Philadelphia Eagles) – Gainwell may not have racked up a lot of yards last week, but it appears that he will be the lead back with RB Miles Sanders on IR. He was the least-prolific back in last week’s blowout win over the Lions, but he has a lot of upside and will get work against the Chargers. Don’t get lost in the box score as the game was out of hand.
  • QB Matthew Stafford (Los Angeles Rams) – Stafford is having an MVP-level season for the Rams. He has throw 300+ yards and three touchdowns (with no picks) in back-to-back games. He faces the Titans this week and they allowed Colts QB Carson Wentz to throw three touchdowns against them last week. Stafford is much better and should have good field position all game.
  • Indianapolis Colts Defense & Special Teams – The Colts D/ST is an underrated streaming option this year. They have scored double-digit points four times this season and only have one negative-point week. Now that there’s film on Jets QB Mike White, I expect a more personalized defense.
  • WR Kendrick Bourne (New England Patriots) – This is a deeper league recommendation. It just seems that Patriots QB Mac Jones is getting production from Bourne right now. He is throwing to WRs Jakobi Meyers and Nelson Agholor 10+ combined and getting a few receptions in return. Bourne is a nice pickup in deeper leagues and is a nice option if you have some receivers on bye.
  • RB Michael Carter (New York Jets) – As I said earlier, I think Jets QB Mike White will have a harder time moving the ball this week now that there is more film on him. Carter had success last week gaining 77 yards on 15 carries and nine receptions for 95 yards. He has great hands and will be a huge asset for White.
  • TE Dan Arnold (Jacksonville Jaguars) – I’ve listed Arnold here a few times this season and he’s been a nice PPR streaming tight end. His only issue is that he hasn’t caught a touchdown pass this year. He has another tough matchup against the Bills this week, but he should be a solid source for receptions and yards.
  • WR Hunter Renfrow (Las Vegas Raiders) – I’m surprised Renfrow is only owned in 56% of leagues. He has been a solid WR3/Flex player this season. Now that WR Henry Ruggs (DUI car accident) is off the team, Renfrow is WR1 for the Raiders. His ownership should jump above 80% going forward.
  • RB Adrian Peterson (Tennessee Titans) – Titans RB Derrick Henry sustained a Jones fracture in last week’s win over the Colts. He has surgery on his foot and it appears that he will be out the rest of the season. They signed Peterson to the main roster and D’Onta Foreman to the practice squad. Peterson is a low-risk add since the Titans offensive gameplan centers around the run. I think Peterson will get 20+ carries a game. I think he is worth using your waive wire spot.
  • Arizona Cardinals Defense & Special Teams – The Cardinals defense will have an easier time this week against the Niners. San Francisco is banged-up and will struggle moving the ball on Sunday afteroon.
  • QB Mac Jones (New England Patriots) – If your quarterback is on bye, Jones could be a streaming option for you. I like his match-up against the patchwork Panthers secondary. Carolina has had to trade for guys to fill holes due to injuries. I do worry about the receiver who will be paired up against Panthers CB Stephon Gilmore, but Jones could focus on the other side of the field.

SIT’EM

  • RB David Johnson (Houston Texans) – Johnson is still owned in 43% of all leagues. He has been horrible all season and barely gets any touches, even after they traded RB Mark Ingram. He has a better match-up this week against the Dolphins, but I’d rather add Jets RB Michael Carter or Cowboys RB Tony Pollard over Johnson.
  • QB Mike White (New York Jets) – Let’s slow down the coronation of White as the next Tom Brady. I legit heard that comparison from ESPN’s Mike Greenberg when he said that White was a late-round pick like him. He had a very good game against the Bengals, but the Colts defense is better. White has also thrown two picks in back-to-back games. If you thought about starting White if you have Tom Brady out on bye, please don’t do it.
  • WR Marquez Callaway (New Orleans Saints) – I listed Callaway in this section last week and he only had 30 receiving yards against the Bucs. Saints QB Jameis Winson tore his ACL last week and third-stringer Trevor Siemian was adequate in relief. Even if backup Taysom Hill (concussion) is healthy enough to start against the Falcons, I still don’t see Callaway’s fantasy stock being very high.
  • RB Chuba Hubbard (Carolina Panthers) – It looks like the Panthers could get RB Christian McCaffrey (hamstring) back this week. Carolina has been super cautious with him in the past, but it appears that they will activated him from the IR. I don’t see much of a role for Hubbard with CMC back. He will play a dozen snaps, but he’s not worthy of a roster spot.
  • QB Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns) – Mayfield is barely able to suit up right now. He hurries throws when there is an ounce of pressure. I know the Bengals gave up a career day for Mike White last week, but it will take 6-8 weeks before Mayfield’s shoulder is healthy again.
  • WR Courtland Sutton (Denver Broncos) – The Broncos take on the Cowboys this week and Sutton will be paired up against Dallas CB Trevon Diggs (who sprained his ankle last week). His outlook right now is that he will be able to play against the Broncos, which is horrible news for Sutton owners. I actually thik WR Tim Patrick could have better overall fantasy production.
  • TE Marcedes Lewis (Green Bay Packers)Packers TE1 Robert Tonyan tore his ACL last week and veteran TE Marcedes Lewis will have a larger role in the offense. Tonyan was a ‘touchdown or nothing’ fantasy tight end and Lewis will be now have that role. I’d rather add Jaguars TE Dan Arnold or Chargers TE Jared Cook.
  • Denver Broncos Defense & Special Teams – The Cowboys offense has been great so far this season. Their defense has given them outstanding field position and they are putting up points. The Broncos traded away LB Von Miller to the Rams, which is a sign that they are packing it in.
  • TE Cole Kmet (Chicago Bears) – Kmet is a skilled pass-catching tight end, but his fantasy stock took a hit with rookie QB Justin Fields under center. He is getting targeted a half-dozen times a game, but his ceiling is much lower. He has yet to crack 50 yards in a game.
  • Philadelphia Eagles Defense & Special Teams – The Eagles are coming off a 44-6 blowout win against the Lions. They played a complete game and their defense was impressive. They have a much better opponent this week when the Chargers come to town. I’m not sure if the Eagles secondary will be able to stop their passing attack.
