2019 NFL Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 1

I am really looking forward to fantasy football this year.

It seems like half the league has exciting young quarterbacks. Also, more running backs are becoming assets in the passing game. It makes for a more entertaining fantasy football experience.

A handful of past fantasy studs like Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown find themselves on new teams. Will either guy continue their top-tier fantasy production or will their fantasy stock diminish?

Here is our Fantasy Football Sit/Start for Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season…and enjoy our awesome MS Paint masterpiece of RB Phillip Lindsay of the Denver Broncos.

I want to explain what I mean by “sit” and “start.” Of course you are going to start some of the guys i say to bench this week, because you probably used high draft picks or a lot of money in an auction for them. My ‘sit’ players are guys I am just not completely sold that they will have good weeks. If you have a guy that you are on the fence about, maybe this will help you pick between the players.

START’EM

  • QB Kyler Murray (Arizona Cardinals) – It’s always super risky to start a rookie quarterback in their first regular season game in the NFL. I saw enough of Murray this preseason to know that he should be just fine. The offensive line still isn’t very good, but he’s mobile enough that he should buy some time. He’s in a pass-heavy offensive scheme and should put up very good fantasy numbers, even in weeks the Cardinals lose.
  • WR James Washington (Pittsburgh Steelers) – Pittsburgh’s offense works best when Big Ben has a couple pass-catching wide receivers. JuJu Smith-Schuster benefited from single coverage for most of last season, but he will get the Antonio Brown treatment now. Washington was a talented wide receiver at Oklahoma State and had success with the deep ball and in the red zone. I think Washington is under-owned and will be a stud this season.
  • RB Phillip Lindsay (Denver Broncos) – Lindsay came out of nowhere last season and was the best rookie running back in Denver. The Broncos will need to rely even more on the run game with Joe Flacco in at quarterback. He works best when he doesn’t have to throw 300+ yards to win games. They face the Raiders on Monday night and I don’t think they did enough to upgrade their defense this offseason. Lindsay should have a good fantasy week.
  • QB Mitchell Trubisky (Chicago Bears) – Bears head coach Matt Nagy said that Trubisky will have full reign of the playbook, meaning the training wheels are complete off. I think they were mostly off most of last season, but I expect he will have more passing attempts this year. He faces a good opponent in Week 1, as the Packers have a secondary that could be exploited.
  • Baltimore Ravens Defense & Special Teams – The Ravens face the Dolphins this week and Miami has spent most of the week trying to trade away their best players. I don’t expect a very competitive team in Miami this season as they are going in all-out rebuild mode. The Ravens should force a few turnovers and I don’t see many points being scored by the Dolphins.
  • RB Dalvin Cook (Minnesota Vikings) – Cook hasn’t stayed healthy enough to be much of a fantasy stud. The Vikings should run the ball a lot more this season and he will finally end up as one of the better fantasy running backs. He faces Atlanta and I wouldn’t rank them among the better defenses in the league. Cook should have a very good week.
  • WR John Brown (Buffalo Bills) – Even though I’m not high on Bills QB Josh Allen, I still think Brown is worth a flex start against the Jets. He’s a speedy receiver and should be open and get to balls that Allen may not have overthrown a bit (an issue that has plagued him since college). Brown might be the only Bills receiver I’d recommend owning right now.
  • TE O.J. Howard (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – Howard has been the TE1 for Tampa Bay when he’s healthy. He’s the most complete tight end on their roster as TE Cameron Brate is a god awful blocker. Howard will lose some touches to Brate, but Howard is the tight end you want in Tampa Bay.
  • TE Tyler Eifert (Cincinnati Bengals) – This pick is for deeper leagues as its a bit risky. Eifert is the tight end you want in Cincinnati. I don’t think TE C.J. Uzomah will garner enough targets to be relevant in fantasy. Eifert was once a top-tier tight end in fantasy, but injuries have derailed his career. He’s healthy and has played like his old self this preseason. He’s worth a look as a flex or TE1 if you’re in a pinch with tight ends like Chicago’s Trey Burton on the injury bubble.
  • Philadelphia Eagles Defense & Special Teams – The Eagles go up against the Redskins, a team that could struggle on offense against good defenses. I believe the Eagles D falls into that category. I don’t think the Redskins have the receivers to help out QB Case Keenum, who can be interception-prone at times. The Eagles are a good play in Week 1.
  • WR Tre’Quan Smith (New Orleans Saints) – Smith had some boom or bust weeks for the Saints last season. He is still battling the same teammates for targets in what I imagine will be a more pass-heavy offense this season. The Saints won’t be able to have as much success on the ground without Mark Ingram, he was an underrated part of their offensive success the last few years. Smith should get a handful of targets and he’s fast enough that he could break one or two for big gains against Houston.
  • RB Dare Ogunbowale (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) [DEEP LEAGUE SLEEPER] The Bucs only have three running backs on the roster and Ogunbowale might have the best hands of the three. He’s currently behind Peyton Barber and Ronald Jones, but he could find his way on the field against the Niners. He could be a nice stash candidate in deep leagues as the future opportunity is there for him.
  • TE Will Dissly (Seattle Seahawks – Dissly was one of the most surprising fantasy tight ends early last season, but he suffered a season-ending injury right as he started to produce in a big way. He’s a boom or bust candidate right now. He’s still playing his way back from the knee injury, but if you’re in a deep league, he has potential.

SIT’EM

  • All Indianapolis Colts Wide Receivers – The entire group took a huge hit when Andrew Luck retired. I’m not saying they are all insta-drops right now, but I would be a little too gun shy to start them Week 1. WR T.Y. Hilton may have a solid fantasy season, but fringe fantasy wide receivers lik Parris Campbell or Deon Cain could have little fantasy impact right now. The tight ends probably took a hit too, but they should still get redzone targets and be fine.
  • RB Frank Gore (Buffalo Bills) – The Bills cut LeSean McCoy and people are adding Gore thinking he will gain his carries. That isn’t expected to be the case, but he should get his carries in-between the 20-yard lines. He had a similar role in Miami last year. Rookie RB Devin Singletary is the fantasy running back you want in Buffalo. I don’t see Gore getting into the endzone much.
  • QB Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) – I’ve listed Stafford here a lot last season and I still think he’s overrated. He was really bad in the second-half of last season. The additions of WR Danny Amendola and rookie TE T.J. Hockenson are huge pluses for him as he missed a possession receiver after they traded away WR Golden Tate last season. He should have better numbers, but I view him as a QB2 right now.
  • RB Leonard Fournette (Jacksonville Jaguars) – Fournette was not a guy that I targeted in any of my fantasy drafts. He’s been a bust so far and I don’t expect it to change with QB Nick Foles under center. He’s been an average running back and there are other guys out there that I’d rather have that were taken much later in drafts. I don’t expect him to have a notable game against Kansas City.
  • WR Geronimo Allison (Green Bay Packers) – I’d rather WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling than Allison right now. Allison hasn’t been able to stay healthy enough for me to invest in him on any of my fantasy teams.
  • RB Darrell Henderson (Los Angeles Rams) – There’s been a lot of hype surrounding Henderson since the Rams traded up to draft the young running back a few months ago. Unfortunately, he currently finds himself third on the depth chart behind two talented running backs, Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown. Henderson could get some work on third down, but he has tough competition ahead of him. I don’t see him doing much in fantasy this week.
  • TE Austin Hooper (Atlanta Falcons) – Hooper has a tall task ahead of him as the Vikings have very good coverage linebackers and safeties. He’s not going to be open much this weekend and could have a rough fantasy week.
  • Tennessee Titans Defense & Special Teams – It’s been awhile since I recommended sitting a defense that faced the Browns. Cleveland upgraded their offense and will be a rough match-up for the Titans. They are too risky and there are better options on there on the waiver wire.
  • QB Jimmy Garoppolo (San Francisco 49ers) – Jimmy G had an up and down preseason, but he did look much better in his last game. The Bucs don’t have an imposing secondary, but I’d rather sit Garoppolo in this game. He hasn’t shown me that he’s much of a fantasy quarterback yet. The potential reward isn’t worth the potential risk in Week 1.
  • WR Robby Anderson (New York Jets) – Anderson is really only good in fantasy when the deep ball is there for him. He’s currently nursing a calf injury that could affect his speed. He’s expected to play, but I am going to sit him this week.
