Engaging Alternatives to the Gym

The average adult should get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise a week to maintain a healthy lifestyle. They should also incorporate strength training exercises for all major muscle groups into their routine on a weekly basis too. In order to achieve this, the majority will just sign up for a membership with their local gym, making use of treadmills and cross trainers, and dabbling with weights and medicine balls. But this can all get a little dull after a couple of trips. After all, you’re just carrying out the same routine exercises with little variation and little interaction with others.

So, what can you do instead?

Here are a couple of engaging alternatives for you to consider!

Boxing

At first glance, boxing can seem like a relatively intimidating venture to pursue. But not to worry. Your first session won’t see you thrown into a ring with a heavy weight champion. In fact, you won’t be expected to take any punches for a relatively long time, if at all! When you attend a club, your coach’s main focus will be on increasing your stamina, strength, and general level of fitness. You will then practice on pads and bags before you progress any further. Who knows – if you find you have a talent you could surpass boosting your fitness levels and find yourself taking home custom trophies and awards too!

Rock Climbing

Now, you may not have ever considered rock climbing before, but it offers a full body workout that proves truly addictive once you get a taste for it. One of the simplest and most practical ways to get into rock climbing is to participate in indoor climbing. While your first visit may be a little overwhelming at first, it will also prove extremely exciting. What’s more? You’ll be set up with all of the safety equipment and supervision that you could possibly need, so you needn’t worry about falling from a height or getting hurt. A tutor will be able to guide you step by step through all of the basic moves. It won’t be long until you have the essential skills to climb unsupervised. This is when you can start travelling further afield and climbing outdoors too!

Cycling

You may have tried out a static bike at your local gym, but this is incomparable to cycling outdoors. After all, you miss out on the feeling of fresh air running through your hair and won’t pass through any stunning landscapes. When cycling outdoors, not only do you benefit from these things, but you also get the same cardiovascular workout as you would in the gym. Studies have shown that individuals who do three 45 minute cycling workouts a week will be biologically nine times younger than someone who doesn’t. This form of exercise also reduces your chances of developing cardiovascular disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

These are just three different alternatives to the gym that you could find a whole lot more engaging. So try them out sooner rather than later!
