There was something we noticed while compiling this list. It was a strong year for female vocalists. Warpaint, eskimeaux, Phantogram and Sleigh Bells all put out some great music. I also need to give props to the guys, since Kishi Bashi and Grouplove released two of the best albums of the year. I actually had to put two Grouplove tracks on this playlist.

It’s almost time for Hipster Santa to ride his vintage Schwinn around the world to deliver record players and typewriters to all the good boys and girls.

December’s playlist is filled with new songs from all across the indie music genre. A few tracks even have an awesome music video. I was surprised to see Susan Sarandon appear in Justice’s new video for “Fire.”

I’ve went on ‘get off my lawn’ rants at the beginning of my Hipster Music Playlist posts the last few months. I’ve been on a campaign for bands to be authentic and not try to manufacture grime and use low-fi tricks during the mixing process. You will not lose your ‘indie cred’ by releasing crisp, clean records.

I went on a rant in last month’s Hipster Music Playlist post. I explained how much I dislike bands using low-fi recording/mixing tricks. It just feels disingenuous, especially when many of today’s bands want to make something ‘real’.

Well, I just want to clear up something. I don’t expect every recording to be as clean as a pop record, but you can just tell when a band is trying to ‘manufacture’ grime on a record. Be honest who you are and your sound will always be authentic.

I didn’t post a Hipster Music Playlist last month because I ran into a wall. Not literally, but I just spent way too much time trying to pick 15 songs I enjoyed enough to share with you guys. There’s a trend going on in indie music that I do not enjoy. Many bands are using low-fi recording and mixing on their tracks. I understand if you’re broke and can’t afford quality equipment, but with DIY recording programs being dirt cheap these days, it comes off as disingenuous. I do not enjoy bands trying to fake a grainy sound. Here’s a tip, if your vocalist sounds like they are singing through a late-90’s PC microphone, you’re doing it wrong.

I’ve been drowning in MLB team previews and fantasy baseball position rankings, so I thoroughly enjoyed making this month’s Hipster Music Playlist. It is filled with new bands and some that might be familiar to you.

I have been called a hipster on more than one occasion. I like indie music more than any other genre of music. Don’t get me wrong, I can rock out to Richard Marx or Ace of Base (depending on the amount of alcohol in my system).

These songs may not be able to melt the snow in your area, but I think you will enjoy them.
