It’s hard to do weekly betting picks for bowl games due to all the transfer portal and the coaching carousel changes. This year, due to the new College Football Playoff format, it’s much easier to do the playoff games.

Can the Indiana Hoosiers shut up the haters and win in South Bend?

We at ‘America’s White Boy’ pick EVERY college football games against the spread for the first round of games of the 2024-25 NCAA College Football Playoff.

Indiana Hoosiers at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-7) – My pick is

The Indiana Hoosiers (11-1, 9-3 ATS) are coming off a 66-0 home win against Purdue which easily covered the -29 point spread. It was a cupcake end to a cupcake-heavy Indiana schedule.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-1, 10-2 ATS) are coming off a 49-35 road win over USC, which covered the -7 spread. The Irish covered against the spread in eight-straight games to end the year.

I loved watching Indiana this year. Their offense was flashy and their defense made big plays when it counted. Unfortunately, they had a very easy schedule this year. Their toughest tests came at the end of the year by winning against Michigan and losing at Ohio State. I would place the Hoosiers in the ‘happy to be here’ category. Notre Dame is battle-tested and are better all-around. I’m taking the Irish to cover at home.

SMU Mustangs at Penn State Nittany Lions (-9) – My pick is SMU Mustangs +9

The SMU Mustangs (11-2, 8-5 ATS) are coming off a close 34-31 loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship game. It fell short of the -2.5 spread as the favorite.

The Penn State Nittany Lions (11-2, 6-7 ATS) are coming off a 45-37 loss to Oregon in the Big Ten Championship game. It was also a loss against the +3 spread.

This one might be the sleeper game of the first round. I think SMU defense could step up and play better than expected. They are very good against the run, but their pass defense has been very inconsistent. Penn State will most likely win, but I think it will be within a touchdown, so give me the points.

Clemson Tigers at Texas Longhorns (-12.5) – My pick is Clemson Tigers +12.5

The Clemson Tigers (10-3, 6-6 ATS) are coming off a 34-31 win against SMU in the ACC Championship game. It also was a win against the +2.5 spread. If Clemson lost that game, they would not have received an at-large bid into the CFP.

The Texas Longhorns (11-2, 7-6 ATS) are coming off a 22-19 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship game. They failed to cover the -3 spread. The Longhorns were 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games.

I’ve been down on Clemson for most of the season, but this betting line had gone a bit too far. Texas has been a heavy public team this year and it’s clear it’s affected this line. Texas may win this outright, but I think Clemson will keep it within double-digits, so I’m taking the points.

Tennessee Volunteers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-7) – My pick is Tennessee Volunteers +7

The Tennessee Volunteers (10-2, 7-5 ATS) are coming off a 36-23 road win over Vanderbilt to end the regular season. They covered the -10 point spread in the win.

The Ohio State Buckeyes (10-2, 6-6 ATS) are coming off a 13-10 home loss to rival Michigan. They weren’t even close to covering the -19.5 spread. It was a shocking outcome due to Michigan’s down season.

I expect this game will be extremely close. There are a lot of question marks coming into this game. The biggest being how will Ohio State fare after the upset loss to Michigan at The Shoe. Both teams have stout defenses and this could be a lower-scoring affair than anticipated. I’m taking the points in this game.

Sweetbob’s college football picks against the spread record in previous seasons:

2013: 134-79-8
2014: 148-118-4
2015: 149-118-3
2016: 196-145-6
2017: 183-159-13
2018: 177-157-6
2019: 187-141-8
2020: 170-160-5
2021: 167-151-8
2022: 185-150-5
2023: 155-144-10
2024: 183-164-11

Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) @Sweetbob & ‘LIKE’ us on Facebook!

About the Author…

Bobby Roberts (otherwise known as Sweetbob) is the creator of ‘America’s White Boy’ and contributor at Project Shanks. I opened the year with some big weeks, but the tail-end of conference play has been rough.

We only have a handful of games this week, so we will pick every single game against the spread.

There were a lot of teams that shuffled to new conferences last offseason. Will any of those new teams take home their conference trophy?

We at ‘America’s White Boy’ pick EVERY college football games against the spread for Conference Championship Weekend of the 2024-25 NCAA Football season (November 30th, 2024).

Iowa State Cyclones vs Arizona State Sun Devils (-2) – My pick is Arizona State Sun Devils -2

The Iowa Cyclones (10-2, 7-5 ATS) are coming off a 29-21 home win over Kansas State, which covered the -2 spread. Their running game was too much for Kansas State to handle. They didn’t rack up an absurd amount of yards, but they extended drives. The negative was the play of QB Rocco Becht, who only completed 13 of 35 attempts, which is unacceptable.

The Arizona State Sun Devils (10-2, 10-2 ATS) are coming off a dominant 49-7 win over Arizona, which easily covered the -7.5 spread. ASU were underrated going into the season, so they’ve been a solid betting team all year. The Sun Devils defense has been playing well. Also, QB Sam Leavitt has been smart with the ball and will land on draft boards next year.

The Sun Devils continue to be underrated, the betting line is the evidence. Becht will have issues against ASU’s defense. I’m taking Arizona State to cover at this neutral site game.

Georgia Bulldogs vs Texas Longhorns (-2.5) – My pick is Texas Longhorns -2.5

The Georgia Bulldogs (10-2, 3-9 ATS) are coming off a close 44-42 win over Georgia Tech, which wasn’t close to the -17 spread. QB Carson Beck has regained his elite form after a midseason turnover spell. He hasn’t thrown an interception in his last three games. I feel like I need to point out that two of those three teams don’t have a great defense.

The Texas Longhorns (11-1, 7-5 ATS) are coming off a 17-7 win over Texas A&M, which covered -4.5 spread. It was a good win over a very good A&M squad. RB Quintrevion Wisner has been outstanding the last two weeks. He’s a big reason why they escaped A&M with the win. The defense gets the biggest share of the win.

The first time these teams met, Georgia won 30-15 on the road. Beck had a horrid game, but it still wasn’t enough to lose the game. The Longhorns defense had a bad first-half, but played much better the rest of the game. I expect this game will be much closer. I think Texas will avenge that loss. I’m taking the Longhorns to cover at this neutral site.

Penn State Nittany Lions vs Oregon Ducks (-3.5) – My pick is Oregon Ducks -3.5

The Penn State Nittany Lions (11-1, 6-5 ATS) are coming off a 44-7 home win over Maryland, which covered the -26.5 spread. Penn State has beaten up on low-tier Big Ten teams this year, but has failed to cover against any above-average conference foes. QB Drew Allar has stepped up to narrowly outright win in those contests.

The Oregon Ducks (12-0, 6-6 ATS) are coming off a 49-21 home win over Washington, which covered the -17 spread. It was a nice rebound after escaping Wisconsin with a 16-13 win. This year’s Oregon squad is different than some of their other great squads since their defense is legit.

It looks like Oregon could win the Big Ten in their first year in the conference. They are clearly the best in the group and will be able to cover in Indianapolis. I’m taking the Ducks to cover at the neutral site.

Clemson Tigers vs SMU Mustangs (-2.5) – My pick is SMU Mustangs -2.5

The Clemson Tigers (9-3, 5-6 ATS) are coming off a 17-14 loss to South Carolina, which also failed to cover the -2.5 betting line. The Gamecocks are an underrated team and I don’t view the loss as that big of a negative. The Tigers have won a lot of games outright in the ACC, but they had trouble covering against many of those teams. QB Cade Klubnik regained some of his past top QB prospect juice, but this Clemson team is the most-flawed teams under Dabo Swinney.

The SMU Mustangs (11-1, 8-4 ATS) are coming off a 38-6 home win over California, which covered the -12.5 spread. The Mustangs seemingly came out of nowhere in the ACC. They were perfect in conference play with their only loss coming at home against BYU. SMU’s defense has gotten better as the season moved along.

We are getting some value in the SMU line. The Mustangs continue to be underrated and it’s not surprising going against a public team like Clemson. It wouldn’t surprise me if SMU limited Clemson like South Carolina did last week. I’m taking SMU to cover at this neutral site game.

Ohio Bobcats vs Miami (OH) RedHawks (-1.5) – My pick is Ohio Bobcats +1.5

The Ohio Bobcats (9-3, 8-4 ATS) are coming off a 42-21 home win over Ball State, which covered the -17.5 betting line. QB Parker Navarro has been a solid dual-threat quarterback this year. He lacks a little in the passing part, but he’s an elusive quarterback. Ohio has been able to take care of business in the MAC as they have won and covered in five-straight games (their last lost was at Miami (OH) in mid-October.

The Miami (OH) RedHawks (8-4, 5-6-1 ATS) are coming off a 28-12 win at Bowling Green, which was also a win against the +2.5 spread. It was a nice upset win over a very good BGSU squad. QB Brett Gabbert has been a mainstay at Miami and it would be great for him to end his collegiate career with a MAC Championship.

I believe this is going to be a very un-MAC-like game. These are two of the best defenses in the conference. It wouldn’t surprise me if the first team to 20 points will win this game. I’m betting on Ohio’s defense forcing Gabbert into some bad throws. I’m taking the points in this game.

QUICK HITS

Western Kentucky at Jacksonville State (-5) – My pick is Jacksonville State -5

Tulane at Army (+5) – My pick is Tulane -5

UNLV at Boise State (-4) – My pick is Boise State -4

Marshall at Louisiana (-5.5) – My pick is Marshall +5.5

Sweetbob’s college football picks against the spread record in previous seasons:

2013: 134-79-8
2014: 148-118-4
2015: 149-118-3
2016: 196-145-6
2017: 183-159-13
2018: 177-157-6
2019: 187-141-8
2020: 170-160-5
2021: 167-151-8
2022: 185-150-5
2023: 155-144-10
2024: 177-162-11

Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) @Sweetbob & ‘LIKE’ us on Facebook!

About the Author…

Bobby Roberts (otherwise known as Sweetbob) is the creator of ‘America’s White Boy’ and contributor at Project Shanks. Obviously, not every team can get an invite.

These teams were all on the bubble, but failed to make it into the field of 68.

There were a few upsets in conference tournaments this year. Many deserving teams were left out of the field of 68. I was surprised a few times during the Selection Show, but I feel good about the field overall.

How many SEC bubble teams missed the cut?

Here is a list of bubble teams which had their bubble burst.

BYU Cougars (22-10) – The Cougars needed to win the West Coast Conference tournament to get in. There were just too many good-to-great teams in their conference and the WCC weren’t going to get four teams in the Big Dance.

SMU Mustangs (23-8) – The Mustangs were undefeated at home, but they were just average on the road this season. They really needed at least one more big win. Had they beaten in Houston late in the season, maybe they would have needed to beat Memphis in the AAC Conference Tournament to earn a bid.

Xavier Musketeers (18-13) – Xavier started the year looking like they were destined to be playing in some big games in March, but they stunk up during Big East Conference play. They were only 8-11 and were just 2-5 against ranked teams this season.

Oklahoma Sooners (18-15) – The Sooners were another team that played great to start the season, but they were only 7-11 in Big 12 play. You just can’t lose 15 games and earn a place in the NCAA Tournament.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (23-9) – The ACC had a handful of teams that were near-automatic to make the field, but Wake Forest didn’t make it. They just didn’t consistently beat the best teams in the ACC to be considered. Losing in overtime to Boston College in the second round of the ACC Conference Tournament was just the nail in the coffin.

Dayton Flyers (23-10) – The Atlantic 10 had some good teams with Davidson and Richmond earning NCAA Tournament berths, but they just weren’t going to get three teams in the field.

Saint Louis Billikens (23-11) – The Atlantic 10 was top-heavy with good teams, but like Dayton, they needed to win their conference tournament to earn a spot. The A-10 will have a big showing in the NIT Tournament.

Texas A&M Aggies (23-12) – A&M was playing their best at the right time, but they needed to take care of business earlier. They had a stretch near the start of the SEC schedule that they lost eight-straight games. Many SEC teams had some bad losses in non-conference play, so they didn’t help their cause by losing to team with average resumés.

North Texas Mean Green (24-6) – North Texas lost to a defensive-minded Louisiana Tech in the Conference USA Tournament. They would have been an interesting team in the Big Dance, but they were just strangled by a tricky team.

Towson Tigers (25-8) – Towson lost to Delaware in the Colonial Conference Tournament. They handled their business in the regular season by sharing the regular season title with UNC Wilmington, but the Colonial just isn’t going to get an at-large bid.

Purdue-Fort Wayne Mastodons (21-11) – Honestly, the Mastodons had a near-zero chance of making the NCAA Tournament, but I had to acknowledge my alma mater. The Horizon League had five 20-win teams and Purdue-Fort Wayne shared the regular season title with Cleveland State. I started the season with a couple rough-to-average weeks, but have been racking up wins more down the stretch.

The Big Ten has some big games this week. Michigan at Michigan State, Penn State at Ohio State and Iowa at Wisconsin are all must-watch games.

I’m keeping an eye on Florida State at Clemson. It’s a must-win for Clemson as they’re struggling right now. I think Florida State has a shot at the upset.

We at ‘America’s White Boy’ pick 25 college football games against the spread in Week 9 of the 2021-22 NCAA Football season (October 30th, 2021).

Michigan at Michigan State (+4.5) – My pick is Michigan State Spartans

Michigan is 7-0 outright and 6-1 against the spread this season. They are coming off a dominant 33-7 home win against Northwestern. The Wolverines are much better than last year, but their overall record has been helped by a light schedule. We will know more about the talent level of this team over the next few games. Michigan State is 7-0 outright and 5-0-2 against the spread. They are coming off a bye week, and in their previous game, they beat IU 20-15. MSU RB Kenneth Walker III didn’t have a great game against the Hoosiers, but should bounce-back this week. The Wolverines defense looks great on paper, but Walker will be the best running back they’ve faced so far this year. If Walker can crack 150+yards, I think the Spartans have a shot to win this game outright, so I’m taking the points.

Texas at Baylor (-3) – My pick is Baylor Bears

Texas is 4-3 outright and against the spread this season. They are coming off a 32-24 home loss to Oklahoma State. It was the second-straight game the Longhorns lost after having a double-digit lead in the second-half. I really don’t know what to say about them or than their defense needs to step up this week. Baylor is 6-1 outright and 5-2 against the spread. They are coming off a 38-24 home win against BYU. OSU RB Abram Smith carried the team with 188 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The Bears can hang with any team in the country when their defense stuffs the run. I think Baylor will limit Texas RB Bijan Robinson and cover at home.

Iowa at Wisconsin (-3) – My pick is Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa is 6-1 outright and 5-2 against the spread. They are coming off a bye week, and in their previous game, they were upset 24-7 at home against Purdue. Iowa QB Spencer Petras threw four interceptions and no touchdowns, by far his worst performance at Iowa. Wisconsin is 4-3 outright and 3-4 against the spread this season. They are coming off a 30-13 road win against Purdue. The Badgers have turned into a run-first team since some early disastrous games from QB Graham Mertz. It has been a smart decision and have turned their season around. Iowa has maybe the best defense in the Big Ten and their run defense is among the best in the country. Purdue upset them with an up-tempo passing offense, which exploited some cracks in their defense. Iowa will bounce-back and could win this game outright, so I’m taking the points.

Georgia vs Florida (+14) – My pick is Florida Gators

This game is being played at a neutral site, TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida. Georgia is 7-0 outright and 5-2 against the spread. They are coming off a bye week, and in their previous game, they beat Kentucky 30-13. QB J.T. Daniels is still dealing with a bank injury and his status is in the air. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart will have a difficult decision if Daniels is healthy enough to start. Backup QB Stetson Bennett has been great in his absence. My gut says that Bennett will get the start in this game. Florida is 4-3 outright and 3-4 against the spread this season. They are coming off a bye week, and in their previous game, they lost to LSU 49-42. The Gators have been a little too loose with the football lately. Florida has a pair of talented quarterbacks, but they combined for four interceptions against LSU. Georgia may have the best defense in the country and those kinds of mistakes will destroy any shot of keeping this game close. Georgia is the better team, but I think Florida will keep it within 14 points with a garbage-time score. I’m taking the points.

Minnesota at Northwestern (+7.5) – My pick is Minnesota Golden Gophers

Minnesota is 5-2 outright and 4-2-1 against the spread. They are coming off a 34-16 home win over Maryland. The Gophers started the year a bit rough with losses to Ohio State and Bowling Green, but they’ve fixed their issues on offense. They’ve been able to move the ball better in their last two games. Northwestern is 3-4 outright and 2-5 against the spread. They are coming off a 33-7 road loss to Michigan. The Wildcats haven’t been able to hang with good teams this year. They were embarrassed in their 56-7 loss to Nebraska earlier this month. Minnesota should be able to run the ball through Northwestern’s front-seven all day. I’m taking Minnesota to cover on the road.

Florida State at Clemson (-10.5) – My pick is Florida State Seminoles

Florida State is 3-4 outright and against the spread this season. They are coming off a 59-3 blowout home win against lowly UMass. The Seminoles have won three-straight games for the first time in a few years. FSU QB Jordan Travis is mobile and can make throws when needed. Clemson is 4-3 outright and 0-7 against the spread. They are coming off a 27-17 road loss to Pitt. Their offense just seems broken right now. They benched QB D.J. Uiagalelei in that game, but backup QB Taisun Phommachanh wasn’t much better. Clemson may squeak out a win here, but Florida State could upset them outright, so I’m taking the points.

SMU at Houston (-2) – My pick is SMU Mustangs

SMU is 7-0 outright and 5-2 against the spread. They are coming off a 55-26 home win over Tulane. Southern Methodist QB Tanner Mordecai is putting together a pretty good season. He has thrown 29 passes with just 7 interceptions. Houston is 6-1 outright and 4-3 against the spread this season. They are coming off a 31-24 overtime home win against East Carolina. If you can force Houston to become one-dimensional, they are beatable. Houston has also given up a couple big passing games to opposing quarterbacks this season. SMU matches up well against Houston and I think they could win outright, so I’m taking the points.

Kentucky at Mississippi State (+1) – My pick is Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky is 6-1 outright and against the spread this season. They are coming off a bye week, and in their previous game, suffered their first loss of the year losing 30-13 at Georgia. Most thought Kentucky would be in the running for a secondary SEC bowl game this year, but they have been better than even the loftiest of expectations. Their defense is among the best in the conference, but they are usually a bit overmatched on offense. Mississippi State is 4-3 outright and 3-4 against the spread this season. They are coming off a 45-6 road win over Vanderbilt. They live and die by the pass under head coach Mike Leach. It’s not unusual for QB Will Rogers to throw the ball 50+ times in a game. Kentucky’s pass defense is outstanding and could force Rogers into some bad throws. I’m taking Kentucky to cover on the road.

North Carolina at Notre Dame (-3.5) – My pick is Notre Dame Fighting Irish

North Carolina is 4-3 outright and 3-4 against the spread. They are coming off their bye week, and in their previous game, they beat Miami (FL) 45-42. The Tar Heels offense was expected to be pass-heavy this season with star QB Sam Howell expected to forego next season to enter the NFL Draft. That may still happen for the young man, but they’ve handcuffed him a little since their loss to Florida State. They are running the ball more and I expect RB Ty Chandler and Howell to combine for 200+ yards on Saturday. Notre Dame is 6-1 outright and 4-3 against the spread this season. They are coming off a 31-16 home win over USC. Irish QB Jack Coan played smart football against the Trojans. Also, RB Kyren Williams had his best game of the season. I expect this game will have a similar outcome. I could see the Irish winning by ten points at home.

Hawaii at Utah State (-5.5) – My pick is Utah State Aggies

This is the section where I pick a smaller conference game. I usually pick a MAC conference game here, but I changed it up and went out West. Hawaii is 4-4 outright and 3-5 against the spread. They are coming off a 48-34 home win over New Mexico State. The Rainbow Warriors had their best game on the ground which saw RB Dedrick Parson rushing for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Utah State is 5-2 outright and 4-3 against the spread this season. They are coming off a 26-24 home win over Colorado State. They’ve had a knack for winning close games, but other than their 48-24 win over North Dakota, their biggest victory has only been four points. These teams are close on talent, but Hawaii hasn’t played great on the road this year. I’ll have a great week that is followed by one that’s around .500. I feel pretty good about my picks this week and to get back on track.

There are a handful of marquee games this weekend. Georgia at Florida might be the most relevant in the big picture when it comes to the College Football Playoff. I would even say that SMU at Memphis could even be seen as being more relevant as SMU is still undefeated this late into the year.

We at ‘America’s White Boy’ pick 25 college football games against the spread in Week 10 of the 2019-20 NCAA Football season (November 2nd, 2019). We also pick some smaller conference games.

Michigan at Maryland (+21) – My pick is Michigan Wolverines

Michigan has made me eat my words. I was right about them early this season, but last week’s beating of Notre Dame really made me change my mind. Their running game is something to fear. Unfortunately for Maryland, the Terrapins are pretty bad against the run. They lost to Minnesota 52-10 last week and the Golden Gophers gained 321 yards on the ground. Michigan should cover against Maryland this week.

Virginia Tech at Notre Dame (-17.5) – My pick is Virginia Tech Hokies

Last week’s 45-14 loss at Michigan is a huge eye-opener for Notre Dame. They were ran on all game and they just couldn’t stop Michigan’s running backs. This isn’t exactly a new issue as they also had trouble against Georgia in their loss earlier this season. The Hokies are on a three-game winning streak and they have a pretty darn good running game. They may not be as good as Notre Dame in many other areas, but I think they are good enough on the ground to be within the point spread on Saturday, so I’m taking the points.

Georgia at Florida (+6.5) – My pick is Florida Gators

Georgia is one of the best teams in college football. They aren’t among the top-of-the-rankings due to an overtime loss against South Carolina two weeks ago. They rebounded and shutout Kentucky 21-0 the following week. Florida has really got more than they bargained for from QB Kyle Trask. He seems to be getting better every week. Their only loss was against LSU and their defense failed them in that contest. If Florida’s defense shows up, I think they can keep this game close, so I’m taking the points in the Swamp.

Miami (FL) at Florida State (-3) – My pick is Florida State Seminoles

Neither team has had a season that will go down in the annals of either team’s storied histories. They have both been inconsistent and have been difficult to handicap. One thing Florida State have going for them is that they play much better at home than they do on the road. The Seminoles have used a two-quarterback system in recent weeks with James Blackman and Alex Hornibrook coming in for various drives. Both quarterbacks have had success, but they both have their limits. The Hurricanes saw QB N’Kosi Perry go down with a shoulder injury. Freshman QB Jarren Williams finished the game and secured the win. Williams had some success playing early this season, but he has struggled in recent weeks. It appears that Williams will start against the Seminoles…and that isn’t a good thing in my eyes. I’ll take Florida State to cover at home.

Rutgers at Illinois (-20) – My pick is Illinois Fighting Illini

Rutgers may have beaten Liberty by 20 last week, but don’t let that sway your betting decision. They are getting their cheeks clapped in Champaign, Illinois on Saturday. Illinois has played well the last three weeks and they are coming off a 24-6 win at Purdue. Illinois is a run-first team and Rutgers don’t do that well (along with many other things). I’m taking Illinois to cover at home.

Utah at Washington (+3.5) – My pick is Utah Utes

The last time Washington faced a good defense, they lost 23-13 at Stanford. They have mostly played against soft defenses this year. Utah has the best defense in the Pac 12 and if they beat Washington, they are one step closer to a Pac-12 Championship game. I think you are getting a bargain with this point spread since I think they will win by more than a touchdown on Saturday.

Ole Miss at Auburn (-19.5) – My pick is Ole Miss Rebels

Auburn is coming off a 23-20 loss to LSU. I thought LSU would come out with the win, but it was closer than I expected. I think LSU is one of the best teams in the country and a field goal loss isn’t anything to hang your head about. That being said, favorites in SEC conference play don’t have a great record against the spread. Bottom tier SEC teams like Ole Miss tend to have a good record against the spread at the end of the year. The public will bet this up and it’s already a tad bloated. Ole Miss is good enough to hang with the Tigers and it will be within the points spread, so I’m taking the points.

Northwestern at Indiana (-11.5) – My pick is Northwestern Wildcats

The last time Indiana beat Northwestern outright was in 2008. The Wildcats are having a down year and this appears to be the year the Hoosiers get a win against them. That being said, this point spread is awfully big. Indiana are on a three-game winning streak, but they faced three of the worst teams in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are a good team and will likely get the win at home, but I don’t see that win being more than ten points, so I’ll take the points in this contest.

Oregon at USC (+4.5) – My pick is Oregon Ducks

Oregon QB Justin Herbert is one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. He was smart to withdraw his name from last year’s draft because he should be one of the top three picks in the 2020 NFL Draft. USC has dealt with a lot of injuries this month and will be without a lot of role players in this game. Oregon won’t run away with this contest and the final score could be close to the point spread, but I’ll take Oregon to cover this week.

Northern Illinois at Central Michigan (+1.5) – My pick is Northern Illinois Huskies

This is where we pick a game between smaller conference teams. Central Michigan gained some betting caché by beating bad MAC teams, but they were smoked 43-20 by Buffalo last week. They are good enough to beat MAC teams like Bowling Green, but they will have trouble against teams like Northern Illinois. The Huskies have beaten some of the better MAC teams and faced tough competition early this year by facing Utah, Nebraska and Vanderbilt all away from home to start the year. We can probably write off Michigan being any sort of Big Ten championship contender after that poor performance.

We are also making a shortlist of potential Heisman candidates. No one is running away with it yet, but conference play is just getting started. We should be able to cross off a few guys after this week.

We at ‘America’s White Boy’ pick 25 college football games against the spread in Week 5 of the 2019-20 NCAA Football season (September 28th,, 2019). We also pick some smaller conference games.

Duke at Virginia Tech (-2.5) – My pick is Duke Blue Devils

The Hokies are starting a rebuild and don’t have a ton of impact players that you’ll see play at the next level. They lost to the bad Boston College squad early this season and played low level teams the last two weeks. Duke started the year out getting trounced by Alabama 42-3, but have looked much better the last two weeks. Duke QB Quentin Harris has a pretty good arm and can do damage with his legs. The Blue Devils are a bit underrated due to a lopsided 42-3 defeat on their record. Duke is a better overall team than Va Tech and should keep this close or upset the Hokies, so I’m taking the points.

Northwestern at Wisconsin (-24) – My pick is Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin is coming off a huge win against Michigan. They spanked them and the Wolverines needed a couple late scores to make the final score look less embarrassing. Northwestern is far from the same team that competed for the Big Ten championship last year. They don’t get any consistency from their quarterback and their defense is below average in the Big Ten. This line does seem a bit inflated due to the Michigan win, but I’ll still bite on it.

Rutgers at Michigan (-27.5) – My pick is Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Speaking of Michigan, they are licking their wounds after getting exposed by Wisconsin. Their offense is about at the same level as most Jim Harbaugh Michigan offenses (which is below average), but their defense is far from any other team Harbaugh has coached in Ann Arbor. The defense can’t bail out the offense and they aren’t starting out in favorable field position. Rutgers is usually a doormat for Michigan, but this game should be within 28 points as the Scarlet Knights will score a few times to keep it within range.

Middle Tennessee at Iowa (-24) – My pick is Iowa Hawkeyes

I love me some Iowa QB Nate Stanley. I’m higher on him than many of the projected quarterbacks in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Hawkeyes will bounce back from the close call against Iowa State. The Blue Raiders stacked their non-conference schedule with some good teams, but they will be overmatched in this game. I’m taking Iowa to cover at home.

USC at Washington (-10) – My pick is USC Trojans

USC is down to their third-string quarterback after Kedon Slovis was knocked out of last week’s game against Utah. Junior QB Matt Fink replaced Slovis and played pretty well. He threw for 351 yards and three passing touchdowns. The offense ran better under Fink than it did for most of the time Slovis was in the game. Washington has been pretty damn good so far this year. QB Jacob Eason had huge shoes to fill by taking over after QB Jake Browning graduated. He is a better athlete and has a higher ceiling than Browning. The Huskies should win the game, but I liked what I saw from Fink last week. I have to take the points.

Clemson at North Carolina (+26.5) – My pick is North Carolina Tar Heels

North Carolina is a middle-of-the-road ACC team. They should probably be 21-point underdogs, but due to their back-to-back losses to Wake Forest and Appalachian State, they aren’t getting any love from Vegas. A loss to App State isn’t embarrassing this year as they are a good team. I think no matter what number Vegas attaches to Clemson’s point spread, they will still get action on Clemson. They are right up there with Alabama as a public team. The Tigers should easily beat the Tar Heels, but this point spread is a handful of points too bloated. I’m taking the points.

Virginia at Notre Dame (-11.5) – My pick is Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Irish are coming off a tough loss to Georgia. They were in the game up until the end, but it just wasn’t meant to be. They just couldn’t stop Georgia’s running game. I was also impressed with Irish QB Ian Book. He held his own against Georgia’s defense, but made two mistakes. They should go back to covering against most ACC teams. Virginia is good, but the Irish defense should clamp down and secure the cover at home.

SMU at South Florida (+7) – My pick is SMU Mustangs

SMU is an improved team with Texas-transfer QB Shane Buechele under center for the Mustangs. It helps that this week he faces a bad South Florida team. They’ve been destroyed in both games against fellow FBS teams. The Bulls are going to have a rough year against most teams in their conference. I’m taking SMU to cover the point spread.

UConn at UCF (-43) – My pick is UCF Knights

UConn is one of the worst teams in the FBS. They are coming off a 38-3 loss to Indiana, which isn’t on par with the talent of recent Hoosier squads. UCF has way more weapons on offense and want to smoke UConn to forget their one-point loss to Pitt. This point spread could be met by halftime. Let’s hope UCF keeps the gas pedal to the floor all game.

Akron at UMass (+6.5) – My pick is Akron Zips

This is where we pick a game between smaller conference teams. These two teams are in the bottom twenty teams in the FBS. UMass is pretty bad at every facet of the game, but Akron can move the ball through the air. That should be the factor in this game. UMass’s secondary is beyond awful and Akron should cover on the road.

QUICK HITS

Arizona State at California (-4.5) – My pick is California

Wake Forest at Boston College (+6.5) – My pick is Wake Forest

FAU at Charlotte (+1) – My pick is Charlotte

Iowa State at Baylor (+2.5) – My pick is Iowa State

Cincinnati at Marshall (+3) – My pick is Cincinnati

East Carolina at Old Dominion (-2.5) – My pick is Old Dominion

UL-Lafayette at Georgia Southern (+3.5) – My pick is UL-Lafayette

Stanford at Oregon State (+3.5) – My pick is Stanford

Kansas State at Oklahoma State (-5) – My pick is Kansas State

Mississippi State at Auburn (-11) – My pick is Auburn

BONUS PICKS!

La Tech at Rice (+10) – My pick is Louisiana Tech

UAB at Western Kentucky (+3) – My pick is UAB

UNLV at Wyoming (-9) – My pick is Wyoming

Colorado State at Utah State (-23.5) – My pick is Colorado State

Washington State at Utah (-5) – My pick is Washington State

Sweetbob’s college football picks against the spread record in previous seasons:

2013: 134-79-8
2014: 148-118-4
2015: 149-118-3
2016: 196-145-6
2017: 183-159-13
2018: 177-157-6
2019: 54-43-3

Follow us on Twitter @Sweetbob & ‘LIKE’ us on Facebook!

About the Author…

Bobby Roberts (otherwise known as Sweetbob) is the creator of ‘America’s White Boy’ and contributor at Project Shanks. Jordan Adams, Kyle Anderson and Zach LaVine were all drafted while Travis Wear caught on with an NBA team after Summer League. That’s a lot of talent that has gone bye bye.

SMU and their head coach Larry Brown (who always looks like he can’t find his keys) have been nearly automatic since early-season losses. They have learned to be patient with the ball. The Mustangs finished the regular season in the top 25 in both assists per game and field goal percentage.

Can Alford quiet all the ‘UCLA shouldn’t be the tournament’ naysayers?

Who do you think will win? We help you fill out your bracket.

After starting the year out 2-3 with losses to Gonzaga, Indiana and Arkansas, SMU rallied and went 25-3 the rest of the year. They don’t have any elite marquee wins, but they do have wins against tournament teams like Cincinnati, Eastern Washington and Wyoming. Larry Brown has transformed the program in the short time he’s been there.

It’s really hard to put a case together why UCLA deserves to be in the tournament field. Their non-conference schedule was atrocious and their only win against a ranked opponent all season was against Utah. Also, let’s not forget that the Bruins lost to Kentucky by 39 points. Steve Alford lost a lot of talent to the NBA Draft and they just didn’t do enough to justify a spot this year. Colorado State should be in their place.

SMU is efficient with the ball while waiting for the best shot to take. UCLA doesn’t have that kind of ball movement. SMU’s Nic Moore is a dynamic guard that is surrounded by two large oak trees (Markus Kennedy and Yanick Moreira). UCLA won’t be able to stop them.

Prediction: #6 SMU Mustangs

**Check out the rest of our NCAA Tournament picks**

Follow us on Twitter @Sweetbob & ‘LIKE’ us on Facebook!

About the Author…

Bobby Roberts (otherwise known as Sweetbob) is the creator of ‘America’s White Boy’ and contributor at Project Shanks.
