2013 March Madness: #4 Saint Louis vs #13 New Mexico State

Sim+Bhullar+New+Mexico+StateDo you want to watch a chubby, Canadian 7’5 basketball player run around?

You’re in luck.

The game between #4 Saint Louis and #13 New Mexico State has one of those. NMSU’s 7’5, 355 lb. Sim Bhullar, who is destined to have a sideshow-like appeal.

After winning the A-10 Tournament, Saint Louis is getting a lot of buzz to be a sleeper pick to win the Midwest bracket. The buzz is warranted, but they have a huge, very huge mountain of a man to climb.

2013 March Madness: #5 Oklahoma State vs #12 Oregon

Marcus+Smart+Oklahoma+State+2013If you’re looking to pick an upset, look no further than when a #5 seed meets a #12 seed in the first-round. These matchups are the most common upsets in the history of the NCAA Tournament.

#5 Oklahoma State (24-8) vs. #12 Oregon (26-8) could be a special game.

In December, it was unthinkable that Oregon would barely make the NCAA Tournament. They were 18-2 through January before hitting the heart of their Pac-12 schedule.

Can Oregon join the long list of #12 seed upsets?

2013 March Madness: #8 Colorado State vs #9 Missouri

Alex Oriakhi, Tony CriswellMany of the most entertaining first-round games in the NCAA Tournament have been when the #8 seed faces the #9 seed.

#8 Colorado State (25-8) vs. #9 Missouri (23-10) will be a good one.

Both teams were locks to make the tourney after having winning records in their respective conferences.

This game will be debated back and forth, but I explain why this game won’t be as close as many believe.

Mad+Rick+Pitino+White+Suit+LouisvilleThe lead game in the Midwest bracket has #1 seed Louisville (29-5) playing the winner of the play-in game between North Carolina A&T and Liberty to determine the #16 seed..

No matter who wins the play-in game, they face an uphill battle. Louisville’s roster is one of the best Rick Pitino’s has recruited while at the school.

My pick will not surprise anyone.

This play-in game is the most interesting in this year’s tournament. The winner of the game could be in line to upset Memphis. Middle Tennessee and St. Mary’s are the two teams not in the power six conferences that basketball analysts argued back and forth whether or not they should be in tournament field. March Madness: Which Bubble Teams Didn’t Get In?

Sad+John+CapilariThere are 340 Division-I teams in college basketball eligible for the postseason NCAA Tournament. Obviously, not every team can get an invite.

These teams were all on the bubble, but failed to make it into the field of 68.

There were some big upsets (Middle Tennessee State) and a few teams that deserved a nod, were passed over.

Here is a list of bubble teams that had their bubble burst.

Hint: John Calipari is sad. Continue reading

The Laettner Shot: The First Time Sports Made Me Cry

LAETTNERThe Christian Laettner shot.

It has been 21 years since it happened, so I think I can finally talk about it.

I have yet to go a month of March without seeing the replay over and over again.

What did I do to deserve this cruel and unusual punishment?

I know I’m not the only person that feels this way. Kentucky basketball has a big following. I doubt Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley or Laettner could step foot in the state of Kentucky without having personal security by their side.

I describe the days before and after the tournament that changed my view of sports. Continue reading

Review: “The Power of Negative Thinking” by Bobby Knight

Bobby+Knight+The+Power+Of+Negative+Thinking+BookIf you asked a group of 100 college basketball fans to write down their top-five college basketball coaches of all-time, Bobby Knight will appear on every fan’s list.

Knight is memorable for accomplishing great things (three national championships and eleven Big Ten titles) and some of the most controversial moments in college basketball history.

The Power of Negative Thinking bundles all the negativity you sense in Coach Knight and explains how you can push yourself into achieving great things in life. It’s an odd method, but Knight’s “realist” common sense approach is refreshing in a book in this genre.

Knight shares anecdotes about his time coaching against Michael Jordan in college, what he learned during his time at Texas Tech and memories of Keith Smart’s shot that won Indiana a National championship in 1987. Continue reading

2013 March Madness: Bubble Teams

John+Caliperi+Kentucky+Bubble+Team+2013+NCAA+TournamentThe NCAA Tournament is right around the corner and teams pushing to win their conference tournaments and assure a spot in this season’s ‘Big Dance’.

There were a few smaller conference upsets that limited the number of at-large bids the larger conferences usually dominate.

Many of the teams on the “bubble” are perennial favorites, like Kentucky who want to defend their title. A few newcomers are also on the bubble, like La Salle who haven’t made the NCAA Tournament since 1992.

Which current bubble teams are safe to receive at-large bids and which teams still have work to do? Continue reading
