They traded for the best power hitter in the Majors and only gave up Starlin Castro and some ‘okay’ prospects. The Marlins just wanted to get rid of Giancarlo Stanton’s massive contract and the Yankees obliged.

Youth is a huge key to the Yankees success. They need their future stars like Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez to keep improving. Judge was making hard contact with every ball that met his bat, but strikeouts were a huge issue down the stretch. Can he cut down on strikeouts and keep his power stroke?

Here is the 2018 MLB season preview for the New York Yankees.

2017 Win/Loss Record: 91-71

Key Additions: OF Giancarlo Stanton, 3B Brandon Drury, 2B Neil Walker, RP David Hale, SP Wade LeBlanc & 2B Jace Peterson

Key Losses: 2B Starlin Castro, SP Michael Pineda, 3B Chase Headley, 3B Todd Frazier, SP Jaime Garcia, OF Matt Holliday, 3B Garrett Cooper & SP Bryan Mitchell

Interleague Schedule: NL East

Projected Starters: Gary Sanchez, Greg Bird, Ronald Torreyes, Brandon Drury, Didi Gregorius, Brett Gardner, Aaron Hicks, Aaron Judge & Giancarlo Stanton

Projected Starting Rotation: Luis Severino, Sonny Gray, Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia & Jordan Montgomery

Closer: Aroldis Chapman

Fantasy Sleeper: 1B Greg Bird – Bird was one of the most coveted young players going into last season. He struggled mightily and was sent down to the minors for quite awhile. He also struggled with injuries and just couldn’t stay healthy. He has power upside, but he could also fall flat on his face again. The Yankees have a ton of power in the lineup, so maybe they could place him somewhere in it that would protect him. I fear he could end up in a platoon if he struggles again. The upside is still hard to ignore.

Prospect To Keep Your Eye On: SP Chance Adams – The Yankees have some homegrown talent in the minors that are almost ready to be called-up. Unfortunately for the position players, there aren’t many at-bats available. There are some spots in the bullpen and starting rotation that could open up throughout the season. Adams is their best pitching prospect and was very good in Triple-A last season. He had an ERA of 2.89 and batters couldn’t get hard contact off of him. He did walk a few too many batters, but due to the lack of hits, his WHIP was still under 1.10. He should start the year back in Triple-A as he works on his off-speed stuff.

Team Analysis: The Yankees could set a record for most home runs by a team in a season. They are just loaded with 20+ homer guys, plus they have monsters like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Pitchers will have a hard time keeping the ball inside the park against the Bronx Bombers this season.

The Yankees kept their starting rotation intact this offseason and didn’t do anything to upgrade it. I would have loved to have seen them sign someone like Lance Lynn or Jake Arrieta to bolster the back-end, but they are keeping Tanaka and Montgomery in those spots.

The bullpen has two talented, former closers breathing down the neck of Aroldis Chapman. Dellin Betances and David Robertson could both step into the role if Chapman struggles as much as he did late last season. They have one of the best bullpens in the league, so even if the back-end of the rotation struggles, they could go to the bullpen early and still be okay.

The AL East is basically the Yankees and Red Sox again. The Blue Jays and Orioles are still competitive, but I don’t see them sticking around in the playoff race. The Yankees/Red Sox rivalry is as hot as ever as they are currently in an arms race. Both teams are spending loads of money. I have Boston ahead of them at the end of the season due to their experienced and talented starting rotation.

2018 Wins Over/Under Betting Line: 94.5 (Prediction: UNDER)

2018 Projected Win/Loss Record: 94-68 (2nd in AL East)

Contrary to popular belief, Jay-Z only owns less than 1% ownership in the Brooklyn Nets. He is more of a figurehead than someone with any power. The majority owner is Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov.

He recently partnered with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to create his own company, Roc Nation. He hopes to complete the sell by the end of the season so he can sign upcoming players in this June’s NBA Draft.

It’s hard to say who used who between Jay-Z and the Nets. The then-New Jersey Nets eyed a marquee name to attached themselves. It helped Jay-Z had New York ties to help create a buzz about push the team’s future move to the area in motion.

On the other hand, Jay-Z is using his experience as a small (very small) minority ownership and parlaying that into a job as a sports agent. It’s a win-win for both parties.

Since Roc Nation is partnered with CAA, they will have extra leverage in signing prospective athletes, since he will have ties to Hollywood. Athletes with aspirations to do more than just play a sport, will have an experienced team to help them do so.

I expect Roc Nation to be a major player in the NBA, NFL and MLB. Young players will fall in love with the idea of being represented by Hova. No other sports agency has that kind of appeal.

First, you have a New York Post picture of an overweight Derek Jeter. Second, you have a report linking Alex Rodriguez to BioGenesis PED scandal.

The Blue Jays and Rays improved their rosters with big trades and the Yankees, besides signing Kevin Youkilis, they did not sign any top free agents.

Can the Yankees win another AL East crown?

Here is the 2013 MLB season preview for the New York Yankees.

2012 Win/Loss Record: 95-67

Key Additions: 3B Kevin Youkilis, DH Travis Hafner, 1B/OF Juan Rivera, P Shawn Kelley, OF Matt Diaz, C Bobby Wilson, 1B Dan Johnson

Key Losses: OF Nick Swisher, C Russell Martin, OF Andruw Jones, OF Raul Ibanez, P Rafael Soriano, P Pedro Feliciano, OF Chris Dickerson, 3B Casey McGehee, 3B Eric Chavez, P Freddy Garcia, P Derek Lowe

Interleague Schedule: NL West + New York Mets

Projected Starters: Chris Stewart, Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Kevin Youkilis, Derek Jeter, Juan Rivera, Brett Gardner, Ichiro Suzuki, Travis Hafner

Projected Starting Rotation: CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Andy Pettitte, Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes

Closer: Mariano Rivera

Fantasy Sleeper: 2B/3B David Adams – Due to Alex Rodriguez’s injury, Adams could find himself in the Majors. Kevin Youkilis should play a lot at third base with Jayson Nix as his primary backup. If Travis Hafner doesn’t pan out as the DH, Youk could DH or play 1B and have Teixeira split DH duties with him. If that happens, Adams will be an automatic call-up. He spent the first few years at second base, but spent half of the season at third base in Double-A. He has hit over .300 at every level so far, but the highest level he’s played is Double-A. Finding a keeper on the Yankees is quite difficult. They have been very patient with their prospects and try not to rush them in fear of them struggling early, like Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain. The Yankees usually trade for need, but with them wanting to cut payroll, bringing Adams up is more plausible.

Team Analysis: The Yankees plan to cut payroll over the next few seasons to avoid the higher luxury taxes. They were picky this offseason with their signings and let Nick Swisher, Russell Martin and Rafael Soriano walk. The Yankees aging stars are becoming more of an issue. They didn’t get any younger by signing Travis Hafner and Youkilis. Robinson Cano is the only position player I can confidently say will play like an All-Star this season. There are too many question marks on this team. I like CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda, but the rest of the pitching staff are inconsistent. We don’t even know if Mariano Rivera will back as dominant as he was. I still think this team will be .500, but with an improved Orioles and Blue Jays, the usual doormats will make the AL East race the talk of sports talk radio the entire season.

Sportsbook.ag’s 2013 Wins Over/Under Line: 87.0 (Prediction: UNDER)

2013 Projected Win/Loss Record: 84-78 (3rd in AL East)

I love being able to having different voices on this blog. It enhances what we are trying to do, to give interesting takes on sports and entertainment. Rebecca Wilcox is the latest person to guest blog on our site. Her take on major league ballparks is an opinion that we both share.

She takes aim at PETCO Park, the new Marlins’ stadium, and Comerica Park. She points out how a team could benefit and gives statistics to back up her opinion.

I know you will enjoy her take. Do you agree with her opinion? Let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment.

Over the past few years there have been several new Major League Baseball ballparks constructed and opened. The New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins and Miami Marlins have all opened new stadiums in the past few seasons. Some of these new stadiums have come under scrutiny due to how far from home plate the outfield fences were built. Some, however, have gained reputations as too home run friendly.

Ballparks, such as Comerica Park in Detroit, have shortened the fences, while others, such as Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia have lengthened theirs. Are Major league Baseball park fences not friendly to theHomeRun Monkey? If Giancarlo Stanton has his way, Marlins Park’s outfield fences would be moved in. “Balls that you feel should go out are barely scraping by,” Stanton told ESPN. Yet there has been only a slight decrease in home runs per game from the old stadium, 1.56 in 2011, to the new stadium, 1.24 through May 1, 2012.

Weather could have just as much a factor as the warmer more humid summer months tend to help balls travel further. Another notoriously difficult park for the HomeRun Monkey is PETCO Park in San Diego. With some of the deepest fences in MLB, PETCO Park has averaged at or near the bottom of MLB in home runs hit per game for four years running and in 2012 PETCO has by far the lowest count, averaging only one home run per game played in the stadium.

However another recently built stadium has seen a sharp rise in home runs, the new Yankee Stadium. In 2008, the last year the Yankees played in old Yankee Stadium, hitters averaged 1.98 home runs per game. That average leapt by almost a full point, to 2.93, in the first year of operations at new Yankee Stadium. So far this year Yankee Stadium is by far the most home run hitter friendly park with an average of 2.95 dingers per game. It seems to stand to reason that shorter fences make for more home runs.

The top ten stadiums with the shortest fence dimensions in right and left fields are among the top 15 stadiums each year in home runs per game. However, other factors do contribute to those numbers. Indoor versus outdoor stadium, number of power hitters on the home team, number of slowpitch pitchers versus fireballers faced are all factors that need to be considered. However, empirical evidence certainly seems to support Mr. Stanton’s position.
