2014 March Madness: #5 VCU vs #12 Stephen F. Austin

Stephen F Austin Lumberjack Cheerleader mascot 2014 NCAA TournamentWe are picking every NCAA Tournament game in an effort to help you fill out your bracket and win your office pool.

VCU seems to outperform their seeding in every NCAA Tournament. Head coach Shaka Smart has had every opportunity to leave town, yet it stays in town.

Stephen F. Austin could be a popular upset pick since they are coming into the tournament with only two losses. The Southland Conference isn’t exactly the Big Ten, so their undefeated conference record should be taken with a grain of salt.

Does VCU have another deep run left or will the Lumberjacks find themselves in the second round?

Who do you think will win? We help you fill out your bracket.

2014 March Madness: #8 Colorado vs #9 Pittsburgh

Talib Zanna Pittsburgh Panthers 2014 NCAA TournamentThis is the first of many NCAA Tournament games we are picking to help you fill out your bracket.

The Big 12 and ACC were both strong conferences this season. Colorado and Pittsburgh faced elite competition and have a few marquee wins to hang their hat on.

Colorado is a different team than the squad they dressed in November. Injuries have caused players to step up.

Pittsburgh is playing great right now. They didn’t look like a NCAA Tournament team for a period of time, but turned this around late.

Who do you think will win? We help you fill out your bracket.

2014 March Madness: Which Bubble Teams Didn’t Get In?

Missouri Tigers NCAA Tournament Bubble Teams 2014There are 345 Division-I teams in college basketball eligible for the postseason 2014 NCAA Tournament. Obviously, not every team can get an invite.

These teams were all on the bubble, but failed to make it into the field of 68.

There were some big upsets (NC State) and a few teams that deserved a nod, but were passed over. I honestly can’t believe the Wolfpack made it into the tourney.

Here is a list of bubble teams which had their bubble burst.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles (27-6) – Southern Miss was on the bubble last season as well and didn’t get in. The were the Conference USA regular season champions, but the 2/3rds of the conference was horrible. The don’t have any marquee wins and had a cake non-conference schedule.

2013-14 College Basketball – All-Name Team

god-sgift-achiuwa-funny-names-college-basketballI’m a little late this year with my college basketball ‘All-Name Team’, but it’s been a busy football season.

We have many new entries this season, but I’m sad many of the great names like Chief Kickingstallionsims have graduated.

We picked through every Division-I college basketball roster and a few smaller schools for our list. This year’s class isn’t as solid as in years past. We are in a rebuilding year in hopes that next year’s class will be filled with gold.

My name is Bobby Roberts, so I am often jealous of people with unique names. The most unique thing about my name is that I was not born ‘Robert Roberts’, Bobby is my given name. I don’t know too many grown men named Bobby.

This list consists of names that we wished he had and ones we find humorous.

NBA Draft: Early Entry List & International Players

trey-burke-nba-draftThis year’s NBA Draft is a little light on stars, but it is filled with many rotation players who can contribute right away.

We all know the potential NBA Lottery picks (Nerlens Noel, Alex Len, Otto Porter), but the list of other underclassmen is very long.

Many early entries will just participate in the process and find out their draft stock is not where they want it to be. They will go back to school in hopes of having a breakout season in college.

Not to be outdone, the international prospect pool is filled with potential. Teams could find some real steals this year if they want to draft and stash players overseas.

Here is a list of early entries and international players currently available to be selected in the 2013 NBA Draft. Continue reading

NBA Draft: Anthony Bennett to have surgery

Anthony+Bennett+UNLV+NBA+DraftAnthony Bennett, the best power forward prospect in this year’s NBA Draft, will miss the entire draft process to have shoulder surgery.

The UNLV freshman decided to forego his college career and enter the NBA Draft after they were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.

Bennett is still set to be a top-five selection, since he’s one of the most-skilled power forward prospects to enter the draft in some time. He has a vast array of post moves, which is something a big man usually doesn’t already possess before they enter the NBA.

Bennett is not the only prospect that will miss the draft process. Centers Alex Len (Maryland) and Nerlens Noel (Kentucky) will also miss draft camp and summer league. In Noel’s case, he will most likely miss most of his rookie season due to his ACL injury last season.

Sports Crush: Amanda Marcum

Amanda+Marcum+Florida+Gulf+Coast+HeaderWe’ve profiled various women in our “Sports Crush” series. Our favorites were UFC’s Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate & U.S. soccer’s Alex Morgan. This is the first time we’re dedicating a post about a lady who isn’t actually an athlete.

Amanda Marcum is the wife of Florida Gulf Coast’s basketball coach Andy Enfield. You may have seen a few pictures of Amanda Marcum before the NCAA Tournament, but did not know her name. She was a model who appeared in Maxim, Stuff and various other magazines.

Due to the current Mrs. Enfield being highlighted in the NCAA Tournament coverage, we’re pulling the trigger and featuring her in a Sports Crush post. We’ve attached a photo gallery to show you why she deserves to be included. Continue reading

March Madness: All-White Boy Team

Marshall+Henderson+White+BoyWe love the NCAA Tournament. We actually launched our site five years ago, right after Kentucky lost in the first round.

The name “America’s White Boy” comes from a term I coined for the white basketball players CBS focuses on during the tournament.

I don’t believe this yearly ritual is intentionally racist. Think of the movies “Hoosiers” or “Rudy”. These players aren’t the most athletic guys and CBS uses them to tell the story of the underdog.

The “Cinderella” aspect of the NCAA Tournament is what brings in the casual sports fan.

Here is our list of the best white basketball players in this year’s tournament. I’m sure CBS will use this as a cheat sheet for their coverage.  Continue reading

Well, the analysis is officially over and it’s time to put on our sweatpants, open up a few beers and enjoy the games.

We scoured the internet to scout all 68 teams in the tournament field…wait, not the team, but the cheerleaders. We’ve picked the ten schools that have the hottest best cheerleaders in the tournament.

March Madness: West Region Picks

AaronCraftOhioStateJerseyThe West region is top heavy.

#1 Gonzaga and #2 Ohio State are coming into the tournament as two of the hottest teams in the country. The rest of the bracket is filled with question marks. Do we really know if Steve Alford’s New Mexico team is good? They excelled in a tough Mountain West conference, but they are the biggest mystery in the West region.

We pick the winners from probable matchups after the (second) first-round of the tournament.

Who do you have representing the West in the Final Four? We help you fill out your bracket. Continue reading

March Madness: Midwest Region Picks

CoachKNetDukeThe Midwest Region is loaded with inconsistent teams and a few that are very underrated.

Michigan State did not get any favors from the selection committee. They are a #3 seed in a bracket with Louisville and Duke (a team that would be a #1 seed if Ryan Kelly was healthy all season).

We go through the bracket and pick potential matchups from the second round until the Final Four.

Who do you have making the Final Four from the Midwest Bracket? We pick our winners and help you fill out your bracket. Continue reading

2013 March Madness: #7 Illinois vs #10 Colorado

brandon-paul-illinois-2013#7 Illinois (22-12) vs. #10 Colorado (21-11) will have the lowest combined assist total of all the first round games. Neither team moves the ball well and you will see many sloppy possessions.

This game should be re-named ‘The Inconsistency Showdown.” You never know which version of the teams will show up.

Will an Illinois win truly validate the strength of the Big Ten Conference?

Who do you think will win? We help you fill out your bracket. Continue reading
