He was a reliever that often pitched multiples innings to get saves. The Hall of Fame was late to the game when it came to voting in relievers. He was a member of some good teams and he was a large part in maintaining those wins. He held the title of Most Career Saves for thirteen years, until Trevor Hoffman surpassed him in 2006.

Harold Baines has never been a Hall of Famer in my eyes. The only achievement worth noting is that he was voted into six All-Star Games and won the Silver Slugger Award once. He bounced between the White Sox and Orioles throughout his career and wasn’t the best player on his team at any point in his career. He did win one World Series ring, but it came as a coach in 2005.

Since Baines is now a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, it’s now time to vote in DH Edgar Martinez. He was a much better overall player than Baines. This will be Martinez’s final season on the ballot and it would be a shame if Baines made it before Martinez.

The bar for the Hall of Fame has slowly been lowered over the last decade due to the true stars of the 90’s aren’t getting voted in due to steroids. We have to dive a little deeper and vote players in that were ‘good’ and didn’t have the steroids stench on them…which turns the Hall of Fame into the Hall of Okay.

If the writers just voted the players in without worrying about steroids, then guys like Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Roger Clemens and others should get in, but we were left with guys like Jim Rice, Jack Morris and Burt Blyleven. The Hall of Fame is being hurt by steroids as it is, so just vote the tainted guys in now before more marginal players stink up the joint.

Follow us on Twitter @Sweetbob & ‘LIKE’ us on Facebook!

About the Author…

Bobby Roberts (otherwise known as Sweetbob) is the creator of ‘America’s White Boy’ and contributor at Project Shanks. This year’s show will feature some of the best wrestlers in the world and they even got a legend like Goldberg to come back.

A lot happens the weekend of Wrestlemania. Many indie promotions run shows in the area since there are tens of thousands of fans in that area, so why not? WWE also runs an Axxess fan festival, NXT Takeover show and the WWE Hall of Fame.

A few people have already been announced to be in this year’s Hall of Fame class (Kurt Angle, Rock N Roll Express & Teddy Long) and a few are strongly rumored like Rick Rude, Diamond Dallas Page and William Regal, so I will not include them on this list.

There are a lot of reasons why a person who deserves to be in the Hall of Fame gets passed over. It’s mostly political or depends on a person’s willingness to sign a Legends marketing deal in order to sell merchandise at the show.

Many stars that have been on the outs with WWE for various reasons have made their way back to the WWE in recent years. All-time greats like Bruno Sammartino, the Ultimate Warrior and Macho Man Randy Savage have been inducted the last few years.

Here are ten wrestlers (or tag teams) that should be in the WWE Hall of Fame (in no particular order).

Owen Hart – In 1999, Hart passed away at a pay-per-view in Kansas City after a harness malfunctioned that was supposed to carry him from top of Kemper Arena down to the ring. His widow Martha has been vocal about not having any sort of relationship with the WWE since they settled a wrongful death lawsuit. She has been at odds against many of Owen’s brothers and sisters since this tragedy. Many got their hopes up in 2016 that maybe Martha and the WWE started a dialogue since WWE released an Owen Hart DVD/Blu-Ray.

“British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith – He’s another member of the famed Hart family. He married into the family, but would be a Hall of Fame without those ties. He was a member of the British Bulldogs and then had a nice solo career. His biggest match was when he won the Intercontinental title at Wembley Stadium in London at Summerslam 92. He passed away in 2002 after years of drug use weakened his heart. It’s only a matter of time before he is in inducted. His family is currently in good standing with the WWE.

Chyna – There are a lot of issues that need to be resolved before Chyna finds her way into the WWE Hall of Fame. I’m not sure which problem is the biggest, since there are three huge ones that stand out. First, she appeared in hardcore pornography. Secondly, she had a very public drug issue and appeared on various rehab reality shows didn’t help her out. Lastly, she is a former girlfriend of Triple H, who is now married to Vince McMahon’s daughter. Chyna died from an accidental overdose in 2016. It may take awhile before she gets inducted since the WWE is extremely PG right now.

Big Van Vader – Vader is a well-traveled pro wrestler that had success in just about every promotion on the planet. Not only did he have success in the WWF and WCW, but he may have had his best years in Japan. He was a big man who laid his stuff in stiff. WWE should try to get him inducted this year since he announced that he has less than two years left to live due to congestive heart failure. I wish him the best and hope he outlives his prognosis.

Lex Luger – Luger may not have been a good choice to receive a top babyface push during WWF’s New Generation, but he ended up having one hell of a career. He was never a great worker in the ring, but the dude could get over. Yes, he didn’t get over to the level WWF wanted him to, but if they pulled the trigger and gave Luger the title at Summerslam 93, he could have been the man for many years to come. The count-out finish felt like a weak orgasm. There’s no denying he was over in WCW, but drugs cut his career short. I think it’s time to put the Total Package in the Hall of Fame.

Miss Elizabeth – I placed Elizabeth immediately after Luger because they will always be tied together. Many blame indirectly blame Luger for her death due to accidental overdose in 2003. I don’t think it would be in good taste to have them in the same Hall of Fame class, but both deserve to be in the WWE Hall of Fame. Miss Elizabeth put valets on the map in pro wrestling. I realize she didn’t invent the valet role, but I doubt Macho Man would have been as over if he was without her. She was so sweet and innocent, he was brash and cocky, so it brought intrigue to his character. People started to ask themselves if there is a different side to him that we didn’t see.

Bam Bam Bigelow – Just like Vader, Bigelow made a name for himself in nearly every major wrestling promotion. He is best known for his time in WWF and WCW, but I would argue that his most important time was in ECW. He helped establish the renegade promotion. He never held a title in the WWF, but he did headline Wrestlemania XI by facing NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor. Bigelow was an innovator in the ring. He was quite agile for his size and helped pave the way for big guys like Kevin Owens to jump off the top rope.

Demolition – Demolition held the record for the longest continuous reign as tag team champions before the New Day passed their mark last year. Ax and Smash deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, but wrestlers who sue the WWE don’t usually end up in there. They first sued the then-WWF after they were let go and they tried to use the Demolition name in Japan. The WWF argued that they came up with the gimmick, but they Ax and Smash argued against that. They are now suing the WWE in the class-action concussion lawsuit, which has little-to-no merit.

The Steiner Brothers – Rick and Scott were one of my favorite tag teams growing up. Actually, Scott Steiner wrestled at the first ever live wresting event I attended. It was WWA event with him, Dick the Bruiser, Bobo Brazil and many other greats. Scott eventually deserves to be in the WWE Hall of Fame as a singles wrestler, but it is doubtful due to his past issues with the WWE. I hope the Steiners eventually make it into the Hall of Fame as a tag team while they are alive. Current WWE tag team American Alpha are clearly fans of the Steiners due to their matching singlets and move-set.

The Midnight Express – You can’t put the Rock N Roll Express in the WWE Hall of Fame and leave out the Midnight Express. Jim Cornette was the perfect heel manager to go with ‘Beautiful’ Bobby Eaton and Dennis Condrey. Stan Lane later filled in for Condrey, but the duo of Eaton and Condrey was the best version of the Midnight Express. These guys sold out arenas and armories all over the South when they faced the Rock N Roll Express. It’s time some more NWA tag teams get their due in the Hall of Fame.

Follow us on Twitter @Sweetbob & ‘LIKE’ us on Facebook!

About the Author…

Bobby Roberts (otherwise known as Sweetbob) is the creator of ‘America’s White Boy’ and contributor at Project Shanks. This is his fourth alcohol-related arrest in six years.

He went to Twitter this morning and vowed to seek the help he needs and to enter rehab. He added, “I can beat this” and we hope he does as well.

The timing of Angle’s arrest couldn’t come at a worse time professionally. He is set to be the second inductee into the ‘TNA Hall of Fame’ in October and is currently in the middle of a major storyline on Impact Wrestling television program. He has a large role in a stable called the ‘Main Event Mafia’ which is feuding with another stable, ‘Aces & Eights’. It is unknown at this time if he will be going into an inpatient or outpatient rehab program.

We breakdown some of the events in Angle’s life that started his downward spiral.

In 2006, Angle was granted an early release from his WWE contract. He stated that he had health issues he needed to get straighten out and couldn’t take the necessary time off if he was contracted with WWE. The exact health problem was never released, but all rumors point to painkiller addiction. He did have several neck issues dating back before he wrestled in the 1996 Olympics with a broken neck. The rumors have never been confirmed, but other WWE talent have hinted the rumors were true.

In 2007, in a Sports Illustrated investigation in a clinic that supplied human growth hormone and anabolic steroids to professional wrestlers, Angle’s name appeared in the findings along with ten other professional wrestlers. Based on client records, Angle received prescriptions for Trenbolone (steroid used on livestock) and nandrolone, both anabolic steroids. He denied ever receiving them, but WWE admitted he did once fail a drug test for steroids, but due to an expired prescription for steroids. He never failed a drug test for pain medication.

After his WWE release, Angle signed with TNA Wrestling. He started off strong winning the NWA Championship soon after his signing and was very ‘over’ with their fans.

His first alcohol-related arrest came in 2007 when he was pulled over after a woman claimed he almost hit her while leaving a local restaurant. He denied the charges and was later cleared of the charge in 2008.

Later in 2008, his marriage failed. His wife Karen, who was a personality in TNA, filed for divorce. She went on to be in a relationship with fellow TNA wrestler Jeff Jarrett. I’m not saying this would lead to his future arrests, but this had to be difficult.

While under a contract with TNA, his other arrests came in early-2011 and late-2011, both alcohol-related. He was fined $250 (plus $225 court fees) for his second arrest and $1500 for his third.

Angle has since remarried and had a child with his new wife. His life appears to be much better after his divorce. This could be one poor decision after straightening himself out. We hope that is the case. Alcoholism isn’t treated by changing your surroundings or relationships, it’s something you need to seek professional help to cope with day-to-day life with the disease.

Before last night’s arrest, there has been some buzz that Angle could end up signing for one last run in the WWE, once his TNA contract expires, and would later be inducted in their Hall of Fame at a much later date. Due to WWE’s ‘PG Era’, this could hurt his shot at ending his career there.

The post Kurt Angle Arrested for DWI…Again first appeared on America's White Boy.
<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">6436</post-id>

The Best Player Nicknames in Baseball History

Bobby Roberts

Features

hall of fame

Jose Bautista

lance berkman

mlb

nicknames

ryan braun

sports

Adam Dunn

Hall of Fame

Joe Dimaggio

Lou Gerhig

Mickey Mantle

Nicknames

Pete Rose

Reggie Jackson

Ryan Braun

Ted Williams

Ty Cobb

Willie Mays

Anyone can have a nickname, it’s easy. See how easy it is?

Well, people have gotten very lazy with nicknames in my generation. Alex Rodriguez is “A-Rod” and Derek Jeter is often referred to as “Jeets.” You see how lame we’ve become?

We scoured the list of players who have ever played in the Majors and we picked the best of all-time.

Here is our baseball player nicknames ‘Hall of Fame”.We have a criteria for a nickname to make this list. If the nickname includes “The” at the beginning, it has a better chance at getting on the list. Mick Foley, Bob Backlund, Trish Stratus, and most importantly, Bruno Sammartino are set to be inducted in Madison Square Garden before Wrestlemania 29.

Sammartino is the biggest name in the upcoming class. He has been dead-set against being inducted, but finally accepted the induction. He believes the current state of professional wrestling feeds the bottom denominator. He has been vocal about the vulgarity in “sports entertainment” and vowed to never accepted an induction invitation. I don’t know what changed, but I’m glad he will finally be in.

Here is a list of ten wrestlers, or wrestling factions, that need to be in the WWE Hall of Fame and the likelihood of their inductions happening in the next five years.

The likelihood number of these wrestlers being inducted in the next five years is rated between 1 to 10 (10 being a sure thing and 1 being extremely unlikely).

The Steiner Brothers – I’m not sure how likely it is that the WWE will make this happen, but they deserve to be in. Scott Steiner is a wildcard and has a strained relationship with both WWE and TNA. Rick and Scott Steiner brought the tag team division into the next generation. They took the baton from tag teams like the Rock N Roll Express and the Midnight Express. They won championships in WWF, WCW and New Japan Pro Wrestling. (3)

New World Order – The NWO faction revolutionized sports entertainment. When Kevin Nash and Scott Hall appeared on WCW Nitro no one could figure out if it was scripted or the two wrestlers sabotaging the television show. The left the WWF where they were known as Razor Ramon and Diesel, so them going by their real names was a kayfabe moment. Hulk Hogan’s transformation into “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan will go down as one of the biggest heel turns into history. The NWO deserves to be in the WWE Hall of Fame, but since most of the WCW roster was part of the faction at some point, they will need to narrow the entrants down to a handful of the original members. Since this induction would involve Hogan, it isn’t likely anytime in the near future. (1)

Rick Rude – As one of the early members of the New World Order and Degeneration X, he helped push professional wrestling into the next generation. Before being a part of those factions, he was one of the best technical wrestlers in the business. His “Rude Awakening” finisher was one of the best moves at that time. He was a great heel with a gimmick of being a ladies’ man. I could see this happening soon. (9)

“Macho Man” Randy Savage – The Macho Man’s induction is long overdue. Vince McMahon and Savage had a long-standing beef rumored to involve his daughter and/or his departure to WCW. He suffered a heart attack while driving and we lost him too soon. His posthumous induction is in limbo, since his father said Randy wanted the entire Poffo family inducted, instead of just putting by himself. McMahon is rumored to be against that idea, so I don’t see it happening unless he warms up to the idea. (1)

Owen Hart – The last of the famous Hart family to jump into pro wrestling, he died in an accident occurred in Kansas City while entering the ring from the rafters. The line failed and he fell and died instantly. He was an innovative wrestler and made a name for himself outside the shadow of his family name. Owen’s widow came out and said she will never agree to a WWE Hall of Fame invite, but would leave it up to their children to decide much later. After watching the Hart Family documentary, Owen’s death is a divisive issue in their family to this day. (0)

Ultimate Warrior – Even though the WWE released a very anti-Warrior DVD in the mid-00’s called “The Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior”, they now seem warm to idea of inducting him. He was a beast in the late 80’s and most of the 90’s, but will never be known as a good wrestler, but he was entertaining as hell. Most of his matches would last a minute, but the way he sprinted to the ring and insanely ramble during his promos, will make him infamous. He defeated Hogan for the WWE Championship is his most iconic match at Wrestlemania 6. (7)

John “Bradshaw” Layfield – JBL didn’t have much success in his first act as a professional wrestler, but after he joined Ron Simmons and formed “The Acolytes”, his path to success in the WWE was easier to see. The Acolytes, later known as the APA, was the most entertaining tag team during “The Attitude Era.” After Ron Simmons retired, Bradshaw went on his own. He embraced his real-life success in the stock market and created a “Texas Billionaire” character called “JBL”. He had a nice run on Smackdown winning the championship on many occasions. A back injury cut his career short, but he kept his name in WWE fans mouths by turning into one of the best color commentators in recent memory. JBL’s induction is a lock. (10)

Lex Luger – Luger is the only wrestler who was once a member of the Four Horseman and the New World Order. He had most of his success outside of those factions. The negative on Luger is that he never fully embraced being a professional wrestler. He is a former football player and many ponder if he felt disappointed that he ended up in wrestling. The other major knock on him was his prescription drug arrest in the early 00’s and is often blamed indirectly for the death of Miss Elizabeth. If Sting was retired, I would like him more than Luger, but since he’s not, Luger should be in. Luger was a big part of his era and he deserves a nod. (7)

Jake “The Snake” Roberts – If you asked me if he deserved to be in the Hall of Fame immediately after watching “Beyond the Mat”, I would have said, “Hell no!”…but a lot of time has passed. He was one of the most methodical wrestlers in wrestling history. His demons have over-shadowed his wrestling ability over the years, but it has finally come full-circle. He has cleaned up his life and is currently living with Diamond Dallas Page while doing his DDP Yoga program. I see his induction happening in the next couple years and I hope he stays clean. (8)

William Regal – Regal is regarded as one of the best pure wrestlers in history, especially by guys like CM Punk and Daniel Bryan. He had some of his best work before arriving in the WWF/WWE, but was great at enhancing younger wrestlers. He is still employed by the WWE, so the likelihood of this happening is plausible, but it could be much later. He is still dabbling in wrestling, so he may need to be officially retire for a few years before he’s considered. You will not get that with Baseball Fantography by Andy Strasberg. This is a collection of photographs from fans that capture the intimate and personal lives of your favorite baseball players from the past and present. Strasberg began this project when he found an old picture of him with Roger Maris at Yankee Stadium in 1966. He hadn’t seen the photo in decades and a nostalgic feeling came over him. He knew that there were other people who had old baseball photos that would have a similar feeling. This is a timeless record of the fans’ baseball experience…by the fans, for the fans.

It has been a long off-season for me. I’m a Chicago Cubs fan and having to endure the St. Louis Cardinals winning the World Series, was quite taxing. I put up a wall between MLB news and myself. Saying all of that, as soon as I opened Baseball Fantography, I fell back in love with the game.

My knowledge of baseball would rival men decades older than me. I would always read as much about the game as possible, buy baseball cards from the 50’s & 60’s as often as I could find them, and I have watched the Ken Burns Baseball series more than I should be allowed. We have all seen the same footage and read the same stories about baseball players, but this group of candid photos reaches you in a different way. This book helps show a personal side of players like: Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle, Derek Jeter, and Roberto Clemente.

The one thing that sets Baseball Fantography apart from other baseball photo collections is the back-story behind every picture. Every picture has a description or a small caveat about what was taking place during the picture. The lone picture that stands out is the candid photo of Eddie Mathews drying off with a towel while he’s still in the shower. The oddest chapter is called “Graves,” that was dedicated to fans’ pictures of the headstones of the sports’ greatest players.

You get iconic, absurd, and thought-provoking photos in this collection. It is worth the $19.99 price and I suggest that you head to your local bookstore (if those still exist) or go to Amazon and buy this book.

Strasberg was a San Diego Padres executive from 1975-1996 and now offers marketing expertise to baseball personalities, teams, leagues, and the Baseball Hall of Fame. Let’s face it, baseball’s Hall of Fame has turned into “the hall of very good,” and Blyleven deserves in. He fell 5 votes shy today for being an inductee, but he is a sure money bet of making it next year. Andre Dawson is the lone candidate and the entire ceremony will be dedicated to the former great of the Montreal Expos and Chicago Cubs. In the following article, I try to make my case for Bert Blyleven to be inducted in baseball’s Hall of Fame.

Blyleven played during a time, when multi-channel ESPNs and regional Fox Sports Net channels did not exist and MLB Extra Innings packages on DirecTV wasn’t even invented, you may not have caught Bert Blyleven’s best work. Unless you caught the highlights on Sportscenter where Chris Berman used a nickname of Burt “Be Home” Blyleven, you would just think that he was an average pitcher. His career ERA was 3.90, but his early career was his peak, but he kept a roster spot on small-market teams. His record was 287-250, just 37 games over .500, but from 1982 until the end of his career in ’92, his ERA was over 4.00. If a pitcher wins nearly 300 games, it nearly negates this feat once a pitcher reaches his 250th loss, like Blyleven.

An argument that Blyleven has for his induction is that his numbers are measurable to Nolan Ryan’s. Blyleven does not have Ryan’s no-hitters or his dominance of one-hit games either. Blyleven’s win-loss record has a lot to do with Blyleven’s teams not scoring many runs, thus having him lose many one-run games. He pitched in a different era than what today’s pitchers will be held up to. Middle-relief pitching was approached as need-based, rather than a necessity, Blyleven pitched in almost 300 career complete games.

Let’s crunch some numbers, in his 22-year career, Blyleven pitched a complete game in over 40% of the games in which he has started. He has never ranked higher than third in the Cy Young voting and has only played in two All-Star games in his 22-year career.

Bert Blyleven will be immortalized into the Hall of Fame. Sometimes players start racking up statistics just cause longevity and not exactly superb play. Blyleven’s 3701 strikeouts are amazing, but his K/9 statistic of 7.4 per 9 innings isn’t super spectacular, but nothing about Blyleven really is. It’s a solid number and Blyleven was a solid pitcher and long-term performance needs to be rewarded with an induction in Cooperstown.

A Sports & Entertainment blog that focuses on absurdity in sports, snarky banter, updates on Tim Tebow’s virginity, and decent sports gambling advice.

The post Bert Blyleven Deserves To Be Hall Of Famer first appeared on America's White Boy.
<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">337</post-id>

It’s Official: Dawson Is in Hall Of Fame

Bobby Roberts

andre dawson

chicago cubs

hall of fame

montreal expos

sports

The verdict is in and Andre Dawson will be the lone inductee into baseball’s Hall of Fame. It was his 9th year on the ballot and the publicity campaign worked for “The Hawk.” Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven were close, but weren’t able to get 75% of the votes to join Dawson.

I have been a huge fan of Andre Dawson since I was about seven years of age. When he appeared on the Cubs, I was unaware where he came from. I was very young and I only kept tabs on the Cubs since I watched them every day on WGN. It wasn’t until later that I found out that he was a star in Montreal for many years. When he arrived in Chicago, he was a home run machine and the clean-up hitter that Chicago needed to finally win a pennant in 1989. He was a nice player to lineup near Ryne Sandberg, but he turned out to be much more for Chicago, since he won the NL MVP in 1987 and lead the league in home runs.

Dawson was clearly a shell of himself later in his career because he played on the very bad turf in Montreal that messed up his knees. He used to have a lot of speed and stole a lot of bases with teammate Tim Raines leading the league many seasons. The Expos were a very fast team, but after playing so many years there, players were plagued with various knee problems. The turf was basically carpet on top of cement.

I will surely be watching the induction of “The Hawk” as I did when Ryne Sandberg was inducted. When you think about the 1987 season for the Cubs, they had Dawson, Sandberg, Rafael Palmeiro, Greg Maddux, Jamie Moyer, and Lee Smith. They had six players that will either be in the Hall of Fame or will be very close. It’s hard to believe that the team finished last place in the NL East that year with a record of 76-85.

It was a shame that Bert Blyleven fell 5 votes of getting into the Hall of Fame. Every pitcher who gets near 300 wins, even if he had nearly as many losses, deserves to get in. He has two more years of eligibility and he should get in next season. Roberto Alomar also fell short in his first year of eligibility. He is another player that should get in and they both faired well in a year with not many stars becoming eligible. Jack Morris also saw an increase in votes, but he still has a long way to go, his name was on about 50% of the ballots.

A Sports & Entertainment blog that focuses on absurdity in sports, snarky banter, updates on Tim Tebow’s virginity, and decent sports gambling advice.

The post It’s Official: Dawson Is in Hall Of Fame first appeared on America's White Boy.
<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">338</post-id>

Review – "Baseball Americana" by Harry Katz

Bobby Roberts

baseball

baseball cards

book review

hall of fame

reviews

Harper Collins has published a great coffee table book entitled “Baseball Americana.” It’s by Harry Katz, Frank Ceresi, Phil Michel, Wilson McBee, and Susan Reyburn, it’s a lot of people’s names, but it’s a big book. There are so many great pictures and information in this book from the Library of Congress. There’s even a panoramic picture of the first Black World Series in 1924. Here is my review of “Baseball Americana”…

I’m a huge baseball fan and when I can read a book about the historical past of baseball, I jump at the opportunity. Some of the things in “Baseball Americana” are things that aren’t shown in any other book. Some of the material that this books includes are a picture baseball being played in 1787, the first ever baseball card, a rare color photograph of Satchel Paige, and even a lithograph of the first ever professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1869.

The book goes in a chronological order that is easy to follow. If you are more interested in the period of 1900-1920, it’s easy to find all of the information and pictures that go along with that time period. One of my favorite things in the book are old rate advertisements that the baseball players were in. There’s even one of Jackie Robinson endorsing Chesterfield cigarettes, I doubt that would go over well these days. No matter what team you follow, you will find something in “Baseball Americana” that you will enjoy.

This huge coffee table book is a conversation piece and a great book to pick up and instantly start thumbing through. I sat down and read the entire book in about a day, but when you start looking at the magnificent photography, it could last you weeks.

If you are a fan of baseball, you will find things in this book that aren’t even in Baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. It’s an amazing collection of pictures, stories, old cartoons depicting baseball, and much more. It’s a must read and at $29.99, it’s a steal. Here is a Youtube video with some of the pictures from the book.

A Sports & Entertainment blog that focuses on absurdity in sports, snarky banter, updates on Tim Tebow’s virginity, and decent sports gambling advice.

<a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share_save addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Famericaswhiteboy.com%2F2009%2F10%2F21%2Freview-baseball-americana-by-harry-katz%2F&title=Review%20%E2%80%93%20%22Baseball%20Americana%22%20by%20Harry%20Katz" data-a2a-url="https://americaswhiteboy.com/2009/10/21/review-baseball-americana-by-harry-katz/" data-a2a-title="Review – "Baseball Americana" by Harry Katz">
The post Review – "Baseball Americana" by Harry Katz first appeared on America's White Boy.
<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">358</post-id>

Review: "Munson" by Marty Appel

Bobby Roberts

book review

boston red sox

hall of fame

new york yankees

reviews

Thuman Munson was a great catcher and team captain for the New York Yankees. He was tragically killed in a plane crash during the prime of his career. He had a great rivalry with Boston Red Sox catcher, Carlton Fisk, it even got personal a few times. Marty Appel has written a book about Munson and I decided that my brother, a big Red Sox fan should read it and write a review. It’s a great book and I knew that he couldn’t say anything bad about it. It proves that Munson’s greatness can unite people, even if they bleed Red Sox crimson.

I am a Red Sox Fan.

I usually run away from anything having to do with George Steinbrenner and his hated “Evil Empire” in New York. However, as painful as it is to admit, I liked Marty Appel’s Munson published by Doubleday. My reasons for liking this book had nothing to do with Munson’s career as a Yankee. I could have cared less about his “American League Rookie of the Year” honors in 1970, his seven All-Star Game appearances, three Gold Gloves awards, 1976 American League Most Valuable Player Award or anything even slightly associated with the pin-stripe wearing Yankee captain. My reasons for loving this book had nothing to do with baseball at all. I liked it because of Appel’s insight on Thurmon Munson the husband, father, friend and man.

Red Sox Nation may frown upon this but I have to be honest with myself about this book. This was a great read, and I enjoyed the insight and anecdotes that have never been told since the Yankee captain perished over 30 years ago. This book could not have been written by anyone else, and could only have been told by Appel who was a friend and biographer for Munson, and former Yankee PR director. Who better to give an inside look at the man, than someone who was there with him and who had direct access to his family, friends and teammates?

After reading Munson I have to admit that while I don’t want to see another Yankee enter the Baseball Hall of Fame, but I do feel that the Hall needs more Thurmon Munson’s in it. His love of family, friends and community kept pulling him home to Canton, Ohio, and in the end he died far to short in the town he loved so much. His whole reason for taking up flying was to allow him more time at home with his family and friends that he loved so much. Why did I pick this book up and read it? As a Red Sox fan I am not sure, but I am glad I did. I came away from it with a huge respect for him as a man, husband and father. I just wish number 15 had not worn the pin stripes for those years and had made his wish for playing with the Indians become a reality. Maybe that would have made reading this book about a Yankee captain a little easier for this Red Sox fan, and the world may still have this beloved captain.

-Gran Roberts

A Sports & Entertainment blog that focuses on absurdity in sports, snarky banter, updates on Tim Tebow’s virginity, and decent sports gambling advice.

<a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share_save addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Famericaswhiteboy.com%2F2009%2F08%2F31%2Freview-munson-by-marty-appel%2F&title=Review%3A%20%22Munson%22%20by%20Marty%20Appel" data-a2a-url="https://americaswhiteboy.com/2009/08/31/review-munson-by-marty-appel/" data-a2a-title="Review: "Munson" by Marty Appel">
The post Review: "Munson" by Marty Appel first appeared on America's White Boy.
<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">438</post-id>

Review: The Class Of Football by Adam Shefter

Bobby Roberts

book review

espn

hall of fame

nfl

nfl network

reviews

NFL Hall of Fame speeches are great to listen to and everyone can take something from them. Former NFL Network, and currently ESPN football analyst, Adam Shefter knew this and he compiled a book of some of the best excerpts from speeches given in Canton, OH at the NFL Hall of Fame inductions throughout the years. Inductees always talk about the principles of life and lessons learned while playing the game and growing up within it. Check out the review of the book, “The Class of Football” edited by Adam Shefter, published by Harper Collins.

Listening to a Hall of Fame speech in any sport is great theater. They have spent hours, days, and weeks prepared his Hall of Fame speech and he knows that what he says at that podium will resonate with their fans. They talk about their mentors, their childhood, the history of the game, family, and teamwork. It’s as if each inductee has a checklist that every speech must have to ensure a great moment. They always dream of this very moment and is probably one of the first foe (nervousness) could get the very best of them.

“The Class of Football” is such a great book to have if you love the history of the NFL. All of the players that you grew up watching is in this book, in their own words, describing some of the principles of life and the game of football.

Mike Singletary’s speech was one of the best. He spoke about growing up poor in Houston, TX. Two of his brothers passed away and his mother sat him down and told him that “there was a greatness in him.” He ended up going back to his room and wrote down a set of goals. He described that that day, his life began. Harry Carson took the stage and pleaded for the NFL to take care of the players on the field, after their careers were over. John Mackey took the stage to tell people and players to make sure that you have “your feet on the ground.” Bill Walsh’s speech was about how not only does teamwork bring players together, but could help unite the city in times of need. Each of these speeches read like a “Bartlett’s Book of Quotations for NFL fans.” It’s a great book for fans of the NFL or any sport and is a go-to book for those who coach teams and need to get a few lessons through to your players.

You should go out and buy this book. Even if you aren’t an avid reader, it reads very fast, since most of the speech excerpts are just a few pages long. Shefter had a great idea with this book and carried out his plan with perfection. He just started at ESPN and I’m sure he will help the company with great ideas like “The Class of Football.”

For more exclusive audio and video of these speeches, go to ClassOfFootball.com.

A Sports & Entertainment blog that focuses on absurdity in sports, snarky banter, updates on Tim Tebow’s virginity, and decent sports gambling advice.

The post Review: The Class Of Football by Adam Shefter first appeared on America's White Boy.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">451</post-id>

A Cubs Fan’s Perspective: Sammy Sosa

Bobby Roberts

chicago cubs

chicago white sox

Features

hall of fame

peds

sammy sosa

sports

I have been a Cubs fan for as long as I’ve been alive. I am 28 years old and some of the earliest memories involved my dad and I watching afternoon games on WGN. I remember Jody Davis, Leon Durham, Rick Sutcliffe, and Lee Smith all fighting the Chicago summer heat. The times were special and moments that I wouldn’t change at all. The teams were bad and most of the crowd didn’t care, and I didn’t care too much either. I was a little kid who idolized the players with dreams of one day playing professional baseball too. Those dreams never came true, but I am still a Cubs fan, although I am a little confused of how happy I am about that today.

I was in middle school when the Cubs traded George Bell to the White Sox for a young outfielder, Sammy Sosa. I liked Bell for the few seasons that he was with the Cubs, but I kind of understood that they needed to get younger. I didn’t know much about Sosa, other than owning a few of his rookie cards. My lone opinion was that he looked extremely happy. Almost immediately, the trade for Sosa started to pay off. He was stealing bases and hitting more homers than I expected. The first season, I thought that he may be a better version of Shawon Dunston, since he didn’t strike out as much, which didn’t say much.

The Cubs didn’t win many games the first few seasons that Sosa was around. I can still hear Harry Caray yell out Sosa’s name after he jacked a 400+ foot home-run. Those moments gave me joy, about as much as an actual Cubs victory. Sosa’s home-run total kept creeping up, but the whispers of the ball being juiced calmed my fears of anything fishy going on. It wasn’t until the summer of ’98 that the homers were getting out of hand. I have to admit, I still didn’t care. Mark McGwire was hitting just as many homers as Sosa and he looked noticeably huge. I didn’t suspect much about steroid use, the only thing that was written was something new to me called “Andro.” I read about it and saw that it wasn’t illegal. I didn’t think anything was wrong, but I wanted Sosa to beat him. I think most people wanted Sosa to beat McGwire, if not for the fact that he was more likeable.

Every time that Sosa took the field in the first inning, he would run out into right field like a perfectly choreographed play. Everything Sosa did was more of a show for the fans. After 9/11, he hit a homer and ran around the bases with a little American flag.

Sosa’s numbers stayed the same as McGwire began to breakdown. Sosa’s average took a hit, since he looked like he was wanting to knock it out of the park with every swing. Finally, his behavior the last year with the Cubs was too much for the club to handle. They dealt him to Baltimore for a few young players. Sosa’s career was never the same, mainly because the cloud of suspicion was too great. To this day he denies all claims of using PEDs, but the revelation of a failed test in 2003 makes it all clear. Sosa apparently cheated, it doesn’t surprise many, but I’m just confused.

I believe that a large number of players used some sort of performance-enhancing drug during the same period of Sosa’s career. I believe he wanted an edge and once he had a taste of success, he couldn’t leave it alone. If he didn’t do it for himself, he did it for the fans. As I said before, my first opinion of Sosa was his smile. He didn’t lose his smile until the end of his career. He didn’t have his smile when he was testifying in front of Congress. If Sosa’s number isn’t retired and he doesn’t make the Hall of Fame, Sosa may never smile again. A decision to forgive and forget has to be made at some point. Some purists still have a big problem with “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and the Black Sox. I say that we still need to decide on what kind of punishment would suit the crime.

My opinion is for the Baseball Writers of America to have a conference. Everyone should take sides and maybe come to a conclusion. I would like to see all the alleged steroid users, that have Hall of Fame numbers, be inducted in the same class. You would be able to put that on Pay-Per-View and it would have a high buyrate. I don’t think it’s right that they used PEDs, but enough is enough. I want to move past this. It may take the player’s union to allow blood testing, it would be a step in the right direction.

A Sports & Entertainment blog that focuses on absurdity in sports, snarky banter, updates on Tim Tebow’s virginity, and decent sports gambling advice.

The post A Cubs Fan’s Perspective: Sammy Sosa first appeared on America's White Boy.
<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">511</post-id>

A Thigh Is Chipper’s Kryptonite

Bobby Roberts

atlanta braves

hall of fame

I have a vested interest in the success of Chipper Jones. No, he is not on one of my fantasy teams (I wish!), I own nearly every one of his rookie cards and I hope he can tack on a few more amazing seasons so he’ll be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Jones was batting over .400 for most of the season, but he re-injured his quadricep a few weeks ago and has dropped down to .394 (it’s still like 2 1/2 Tulowitzkis).

The Braves could end up being sellers at the trading deadline, which would mark the first time in over a decade that they will be attempting to build for the future before the deadline. They have been plagued by injuries to Yunel Escobar, Brian McCann, and John Smoltz. The Braves disabled list looks like an all-star team, so it would be smart for Bobby Cox to get thrown out of some more games to at least pad his already staggering record of tosses.

The Braves are an older team, but they have some young players that could step in and be competitive in the coin-flip that is the NL East. They will most likely lose Mark Teixeira at the end of the season if they don’t try to trade him. Tom Glavine and John Smoltz are mostly likely going to the Hall in five years and I don’t know how many more seasons Bobby Cox has left in him.

It would be great to see Chipper Jones on a contender again. He was like Derek Jeter in his earlier days, always in the post-season and doing things to win games. If the Braves aren’t a contender within two seasons, look for Jones to either go somewhere else to win or the Braves may have to deal him to build for the future.

If Chipper ends up batting .400 this season, imagine the effect he would have on my baseball card collection?!

A Sports & Entertainment blog that focuses on absurdity in sports, snarky banter, updates on Tim Tebow’s virginity, and decent sports gambling advice.

The post A Thigh Is Chipper’s Kryptonite first appeared on America's White Boy.
<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">621</post-id>
