Many of you will soon be drafting your fantasy football teams for the 2023 season. It’s nearly impossible to win a league these days without a stud quarterback. The days of owning LaDanian Tomlinson and plowing through the league are long over.
We all know the studs in fantasy and if you own a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen, barring an injury, you have a great head-start on the year. Unfortunately, not everyone can have those two men on your team, especially in a deep league.
In a fantasy draft, you usually don’t roll the dice and take a deep quarterback sleeper, unless you’re in a twenty-team league. I accrued a list that gets progressively more sleeper-ish as you read. There’s a mix of talent of guys who should be drafted in all standard leagues and, “I’ve never heard that name before” sleepers.
Daniel Jones (New York Giants) – Jones dealt with so many injuries to his pass catchers last year. It’s impressive that he had such a big bounce-back year with most of his wide receivers and tight ends landing on the injury report for long stretches of the year. I like that the Giants added TE Darren Waller and WR Parris Campbell to help him. Also, Jones is sneaky quick and will acrue plenty of yards with his feet.
Geno Smith (Seattle Seahawks) – At the start of last season, no one expected Smith to entrench himself as Seattle’s quarterback. He had a big year and earned himself a new contract. He was already loaded with receivers and then added WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba to the fantastic wide receiver duo of D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Seattle may end up with a top-six passing offense this year.
Russell Wilson (Denver Broncos) – Wilson was awful last year and much of the blame was put on first-year Nathaniel Hackett, who didn’t survive the year. Veteran head coach Sean Payton took over this offseason and he knows a few things about running an elite passing offense with a shorter quarterback. Wilson will see an uptick in fantasy production across the board.
Brock Purdy (San Francisco 49ers) – Was Purdy a late-season anomaly or is he the franchise quarterback? We will know the answer to that question by midseason. I always liked him at Iowa State, but was still shocked by how well he played in relief last year. He’s only owned in roughly a quarter of leagues and could be a solid QB2 right out of the gate, or better.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson (Cleveland Browns) – Thompson-Robinson improved every single year at UCLA. He wasn’t a skilled quarterback early in his college career, but he morphed into an accurate passer with athletic abilities. He has looked fantastic this preseason, but there is no quarterback controversy in Cleveland. Thompson-Robinson is a handcuff if you own Deshaun Watson in a deeper league.
Tyson Bagent (Chicago Bears) – This is the sleeperest of all quarterback sleepers. Bagent was an undrafted free agent out of Division II Shepherd University. He balled out in college, but he faced low-level talent. He impressed the Bears staff enough this preseason that they cut presumed QB2 P.J. Walker paving the way for Bagent to backup Justin Fields. There’s a chance that he will leapfrog backup Nathan Peterman and become QB2 in Chicago. Fields plays a physical style and I would have Bagent as a handcuff if you own Fields in a deep league.
