Will the Jacksonville Jaguars go 0-17 this season?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of two winless teams left in the NFL (the Detroit Lions is the other). Expectations weren’t very high going into the season, but it’s been worse as rookie QB Trevor Lawrence and new head coach Urban Meyer have struggled.

The possibility of the Jaguars going 0-17 started when they lost to the Houston Texans in Week 1. You could easily say that the Texans are the worst team in the league, but you can’t really rank them there if they hold a win over the Jaguars.

The Jaguars have a lot off issues, but they start at the top. The front office spent $90 million on free agents this offseason, but that money was not wisely spent. They need more depth and didn’t need to spend big money for CB Shaquill Griffin or WR Marvin Jones. They jumped to sign those guys a little too early. Griffin is great, but a guy at the talent-level of Jones could have been had for half the price later in free agency. The reason I don’t think Griffin is worth the price is because that’s a move made by a contending team. They needed to spread the money around for depth at multiple positions.

The next step down in the hierarchy is head coach Urban Meyer. He made a huge mistake this preseason by splitting first-team snaps between rookie QB Trevor Lawrence and third-year QB Gardner Minshew. Everyone knew the Jaguars were going to start Lawrence in Week 1, but Meyer decided to still play it up as a real QB competition. The Jaguars traded Minshew to the Eagles at the end of the preseason, so he stunted Lawrence’s growth for nothing. Also, Meyer’s situation didn’t get any easier as he was videotaped groping a blonde woman in a Dublin, Ohio bar this weekend. He apologized for his actions, but that’s such a bonehead move by a guy the entire team looks to for guidance.

Injuries are also piling up and their first big loss was this preseason when rookie RB Travis Etienne injured his foot and was put on season-ending IR. They also lost WR D.J. Chark for the season just this week when he broke his ankle. They already ranked #27 in passing yards, so that loss will sting.

When will the Jaguars get their first victory this season?

If you look at their upcoming games, a win against the Dolphins in Week 6 is their first real chance. Miami QB Jacoby Brissett has been unimpressive and leaves his defense with horrible field position. A few 50/50 balls could go the Jaguars way and it wouldn’t shock me if this is when they get their first win…plus weird things happen in London games.

If they don’t get the win against Miami, it may be awhile. I could see them being competitive at home against Atlanta in Week 12, at home against Houston in Week 15 or on the road against the Jets in Week 16.

In closing, I don’t think Jacksonville will be the first team to go 0-17. Their overall schedule isn’t horrible and the AFC South is a weak division. I also think QB Trevor Lawrence is smart enough to learn on the job and should be much better in the second-half of the season. As far as Urban Meyer is concerned, if the Jaguars only win two games this season, it wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up at USC next season.
