2020 NFL Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 4

We saw some new, young faces make a name for themselves last week. A few rookie wide receivers lead that list with Vikings rookie WR Justin Jefferson catching seven balls for 175 yards and a touchdown.

Texans QB Deshaun Watson started the season out against the Chiefs, Ravens and Steelers…can you name three worse teams to face to begin a season? Can he reverse course against the Vikings?

Will Bucs QB Tom Brady have a big game against the Chargers?

Here is our Fantasy Football Sit/Start for Week 4 of the 2020 NFL season…and enjoy our awesome MS Paint masterpiece of QB Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans.

I want to explain what I mean by “sit” and “start.” Of course you are going to start some of the guys i say to bench this week, because you probably used high draft picks or a lot of money in an auction for them. My ‘sit’ players are guys I am just not completely sold that they will have good weeks. If you have a guy that you are on the fence about, maybe this will help you pick between the players.

START’EM

  • QB Deshaun Watson (Houston Texans) – The Texans faced three of the best teams in the AFC in their first three games (Chiefs, Ravens & Steelers). Watson hasn’t looked great in any of those games, but he wasn’t horrible. He’s clearly learning the NFL without WR DeAndre Hopkins. He has some talented receivers, but there has been a learning curve (against very good teams). He faces the Vikings this week, who has been vulnerable on defense. The Texans will bounce-back and Watson will look more like his old self.
  • RB Carlos Hyde (Seattle Seahawks)Seahawks RB Chris Carson sprained his knee last week and he’s likely that he will miss Sunday’s game against the Dolphins. There’s still a chance that he could recover by then, but this injury usually keeps players out a week or two. Hyde does have risk involved, even if Carson misses the game. Seattle seems confident in both Hyde and RB Travis Homer, so he could split the carries. Hyde has the most experience and is better at pass-blocking, so he should be in the game more. Keep an eye on the injury report and if Carson is due to miss this game, pick up Hyde.
  • WR Kenny Golladay (Detroit Lions) – Lions QB Matthew Stafford is a below-average player without Golladay. He just has trouble hitting smaller targets. It has been a problem for much of his career. Golladay returned from injury and made his season debut on Sunday. He had six receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown. He was only targeted seven times and I expect a larger total against the Saints this week.
  • TE Mo Alie-Cox (Indianapolis Colts) – I’ve watched Alie-Cox since his rookie season. The Colts viewed him as a long-term project, as he was a college basketball player. He’s a big guy and has become a pretty decent blocker with good hands. The Colts let TE Eric Ebron leave via free agency and signed TE Trey Burton this offseason to be their TE2 behind Jack Doyle. Well, Burton got injured in camp and Doyle soon followed him. Alie-Cox has been a very good tight end in Doyle’s absence. He played so well last week that he still played more than Doyle, who suited up against the Jets.
  • Indianapolis Colts Defense & Special Teams – The Colts are coming off back-to-back games with a safety. I can’t remember that ever happening in franchise history, if so, it has been extremely rare for any team to do that. They also had two pick-six interception touchdowns against Jets QB Sam Darnold. The Colts face the Bears on Sunday, who will start QB Nick Foles in place of QB Mitchell Trubisky. Foles is the better quarterback, but he will be without RB Tarik Cohen, who just tore his ACL. The Colts defense is young and fast and will cause Foles to make a couple mistakes.
  • RB Jeff Wilson Jr. (San Francisco 49ers) – The Niners are banged up beyond belief and they still blew out the Giants 36-9. They are without RB Raheem Mostert (knee injury), backup RB Tevin Coleman is on IR (knee sprain), and third-down back Jerick McKinnon was knocked out of last week’s game with a rib injury. Keep an eye on the injury report because McKinnon is currently day-to-day, but if he can’t go, Wilson should be a solid pickup this week. He isn’t super flashy as a running back, but if he can get into the second-level, he could do some damage in the passing game.
  • WR Justin Jefferson (Minnesota Vikings) – As I mentioned earlier, Jefferson had a breakout game against the Titans. Many thought that he was behind WR Bisi Johnson on the depth chart, but that all changed last week. Keep an eye on any COVID-19 test failures on Minnesota this week. A few players on Tennessee failed, so if the same happens on Minnesota, their game could be postponed. It’s early in the week, so keep your eyes on the story. Also, Jefferson has two very favorable matchups in the following weeks, Seattle and Atlanta.
  • TE Dalton Schultz (Dallas Cowboys) – It appears that Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is looking for Schultz more and more. He has racked up 16 targets in the last two games and had 13 receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown during that span. They should pass often against the Browns this week and Schultz will be a large part of their gameplan.
  • WR Allen Lazard (Green Bay Packers) – Packers WR Davante Adams missed last week’s game due to a hamstring injury. Lazard slid into the WR1 role and caught six passes for 146 yards and a touchdown against the Saints. Adams could be healthy enough to play this week against the Falcons. Atlanta’s pass defense is poor, so even if Adam plays, there should be enough work for Lazard to stay among the top 25 wide receivers this week.
  • RB Myles Gaskin (Miami Dolphins) – Gaskin may not be the best volume running back, but when you add in what he can do in the passing game, he’s dynamic. He wasn’t really on my radar heading into Week 1. I expected him to play a third-down back role behind running backs Matt Breida and Jordan Howard. Gaskin is clearly doing the most with his touches and has jumped ahead of them on the depth chart. Gaskin should have a good game against the Seahawks as they’ve allowed a couple RBs with good hands to do some damage in the passing game.
  • Los Angeles Chargers Defense & Special Teams – I know it almost feels sacrilegious to start a defense in fantasy against QB Tom Brady. I’m rolling the dice here because I like the Chargers secondary and think they can get some pressure on Brady up front. The Bucs are coming off a 28-10 win in Denver on Sunday. They had a very good first-half, but failed to score a touchdown after the second-quarter. I wouldn’t be afraid to start the Chargers D/ST this week.
  • WR Brandon Aiyuk (San Francisco 49ers) – I mentioned earlier that the Niners have more players in triage than they suit up on Sundays (I’m being a tad hyperbolic here, but it’s close). The Niners wide receiving corps were also hit with the injury bug. Aiyuk was activated in Week 2 after missing the first game due to a hamstring injury. He didn’t do much against the Jets in his debut, but he had a very good performance in their blowout of the Giants. Aiyuk had five receptions for 70 yards and added a rushing touchdown. There’s a chance that TE George Kittle could play this week, but I still think Aiyuk will get a handful of targets against the Eagles.
  • QB Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns) – Okay, hear me out here…this matchup against the Cowboys is the best chance of Baker Mayfield having a big fantasy week. I expect the Browns will go down early and he will need to pass often to keep them within striking distance. The Cowboys have a crazy pass rush, so Mayfield will need a strong performance by his offensive line. I like his chances of putting up some big numbers this week.

SIT’EM

  • RB Joe Mixon (Cincinnati Bengals) – Mixon averaged less than three yards per carry in back-to-back games. He has yet to score a touchdown and has been below average this season. I thought he was due to a big game against the Browns in Week 2, but the dude just didn’t show up for that game. I’d drop him and pick up a running back like Myles Gaskin or Adrian Peterson.
  • QB Nick Foles (Chicago Bears) – Foles is the better quarterback in Chicago, but he is facing an underrated Colts defense. Indy has been great against the pass and Foles will be without RB Tarik Cohen. I’d shy away from starting Foles this week.
  • WR D.J. Moore (Carolina Panthers) – Moore is a match-up play for me. He will have a few great fantasy games this week, but there will be some stinkers. I don’t like him against the Cardinals. I don’t think the Panthers will throw the ball enough to make WR Robby Anderson or Moore top receivers this week.
  • RB Devonta Freeman (New York Giants) – I mentioned Freeman in this section last week. I just knew it would take him a few weeks to get into ‘football shape’. Also, he will need to learn the offense (blocking schemes) to stay in the game during passing plays. Freeman only ran the ball five times and gained just ten yards. It wasn’t like RB Dion Lewis stole carries, the Giants were just behind all game and needed to attempt to throw a lot. They face the Rams this week, which is bad news for the backfield.
  • QB Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers) – Herbert is expected to start again this week for the injured QB Tyrod Taylor (lung). He has a tall task against the Bucs, who has some great talent in their secondary. This should be the first week that Herbert will look like a rookie. I don’t expect another 300-yard game this week.
  • WR T.Y. Hilton (Indianapolis Colts) – It’s clear that Hilton isn’t the first option QB Philip Rivers looks for in games. Through the first three games, he only has 10 receptions for 133 yards with no touchdowns. I thought he would have his best game last week with WR Parris Campbell out with a knee injury, but that didn’t happen. On the flipside, the Colts had that game in the bag early in the game, so passing wasn’t a huge part of their game. I still think I would rather have WR Zach Pascal, although I wouldn’t rush to go pick him up. I’m just not high on Hilton at the moment.
  • TE Logan Thomas (Washington Football Team) – Thomas has had a lot of targets in Washington’s offense, but he has only caught 12 passes on 24 targets. He hasn’t even done much with those 12 receptions as he only has a total of 94 yards combined. I was lukewarm on Thomas to start the year, but he just is doing much with his touches.
  • New Orleans Saints Defense & Special Teams – The last two weeks, the Saints allowed the Raiders and Packers to gain yards at will. They face the Lions this week, who are a better offensive team with WR Kenny Golladay back. The Saints pass defense made Raiders QB Derek Carr look like Kenny Stabler out there. The Lions offense should have a good week against the Saints.
  • WR Tee Higgins (Cincinnati Bengals) – Higgins is a trendy pick to add on the waiver wire, but it’s a bit premature. He is still behind wide receivers A.J. Green and Tyler Boyd on the depth chart. Higgins will be a good wide receiver, but he won’t get nine targets every game. He’s a match-up play and maybe someone you could add if you’re thin on talent due to bye weeks, but not right now in Week 4 against the Jaguars.
  • RB Macolm Brown (Los Angeles Rams) – I wasn’t high on Brown coming into the season due to the Rams backfield being rather crowded. He started the year with a two-touchdown performance, but has shared carries with running backs Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson Jr. ever since. Brown had surgery on his pinkie almost two weeks ago. Akers missed last week with an injury, so it was just Brown and Henderson sharing time (they played in the same amount of snaps). Brown only averaged 2.7 yards over his seven attempts against the Bills. Henderson received 20 carries and gained 114 yards with a touchdown. The Rams running back situation in fantasy is similar to the Patriots. They have a few talented running backs and you never really know which one will have the best week.
  • QB Tom Brady (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – Yes, you should think about benching Brady against the Chargers. He just isn’t smooth right now, but he’s still very good. The Chargers pass rush will force Brady to throw underneath to get the ball out of his hands. Brady will fall outside of the top 15 QBs in fantasy this week.
