2020 NFL Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 2

Since we didn’t have any preseason games, we really had to watch the Week 1 games to really see the rank and file of all the players. We now know where some of these players fall in their teams offensive plans. There are a few former elite players that may find themselves on the waiver wire soon.

There was a game of musical chairs this offseason and there are a ton of new starting quarterbacks around the league.

Can Tampa Bay QB Tom Brady (that’s still strange to type) start the season off strong against  New Orleans?

Here is our Fantasy Football Sit/Start for Week 2 of the 2020 NFL season…and enjoy our awesome MS Paint masterpiece of QB Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills.

I want to explain what I mean by “sit” and “start.” Of course you are going to start some of the guys i say to bench this week, because you probably used high draft picks or a lot of money in an auction for them. My ‘sit’ players are guys I am just not completely sold that they will have good weeks. If you have a guy that you are on the fence about, maybe this will help you pick between the players.

START’EM

  • QB Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills) – I’ve been down on Allen since he was in college, so I really had to see something in Week 1 for me to change gears so hard. He was able to move the ball with his arm and most importantly, with his legs. He faces he the Dolphins this week and they allowed Patriots QB Cam Newton to run all over them last week. As long as Allen avoids interceptions, I think he should be a top-six fantasy quarterback this week.
  • RB Malcolm Brown (Los Angeles Rams) – I thought Brown would play a lead back in a RB committee situation for the Rams. I thought that running backs Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson would vulture touchdowns and redzone work. Brown actually did most of the redzone work last week and he did way more with his touches than Akers and Henderson. The Rams face the Chiefs on Sunday. Kansas City allowed Texans RB David Johnson to get in some work last Thursday. Brown shouldn’t be hindered by the Chiefs defense.
  • WR Robby Anderson (Carolina Panthers) – Anderson could be a frustrating wide receiver to have on your team. He has historically been a boom-or-bust wide receiver that has been extremely touchdown-dependent. He’s with Carolina now and in his first game, he was used as a deep threat and in the normal flow passing routes. He finished with six catches for 115 yards and a touchdown. Most of his yards came from a 75-yard touchdown. He faces Tampa Bay on Sunday and QB Teddy Bridgewater may not have as much time in the pocket due to the Bucs pass rush. Since Anderson is being used as more than a deep threat, I think he should still be a solid fantasy WR2 this week.
  • TE Logan Thomas (Washington Football Team) – Thomas led Washington in targets last week with eight. He only caught four of those targets for 37 yards, but one of those was a touchdown. It shows that they are really trying to showcase Thomas in their offense. They face Arizona on Sunday, a team that has been known to give up solid yards to tight ends in the past. If Thomas can get the same amount of targets again this week, he should have continued success. He should be a top-ten fantasy tight end.
  • San Francisco 49ers Defense & Special Teams – Did the person who owned the Niners defense in your league happen to cut them after a somewhat disappointing Week 1? Well, jump on that waiver wire claim right now. The Niners will bounce back against the Jets, who put Le’Veon Bell on IR with a torn hamstring. Jets QB Sam Darnold didn’t look good and they will need more than just RB Frank Gore from their running game to keep the the Niners linebackers from just falling back into coverage on every snap.
  • RB Nyheim Hines (Indianapolis Colts)Colts RB Marlon Mack ruptured his Achilles last week and Hines stepped up and had a lot of success for the Colts. Rookie RB Jonathan Taylor was named the starter, but Hines will still get a ton of action. The pair combined for 14 receptions last week. QB Philip Rivers loves to check-down to his running backs. Hines has the best hands of the pair. I expect Taylor will get most of the between-the-tackles work and Hines will be used on most passing downs.
  • WR Scotty Miller (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – Tom Brady may have found his true love in Tampa, a short, white possession receiver. Miller had five receptions for 73 yards. He was the only Buccaneers receiver that did better than expected. You don’t have to be the most athletic receiver to become Brady’s #1 target, you just have to run sharp routes and get open. Miller did just that in Week 1 and I expect him to continue this weekend against Carolina.
  • TE Jared Cook (New Orleans Saints)Saints WR Michael Thomas is expected to miss their game on Monday night (and maybe a few more). The Saints will use their running backs more in the passing game and Cook will get more targets. he led the team in targets last week and he will do it again against the Raiders. Cook is talented as hell and could carry an offense if needed. I expected a healthy dose of RBs Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray as well.
  • WR Jalen Reagor (Philadelphia Eagles) – Eagles QB Carson Wentz was running for his life from Washington’s pass rush, but he still managed to connect with Reagor for a 55-yard reception. The Rams have a stout pass rush as well, but I think Reagor will get a few more looks on Sunday. The Rams will have their hands full with the Eagles pair of stud tight ends. Reagor will see single coverage all game.
  • RB James Robinson (Jacksonville Jaguars) – I don’t know how Robinson went undrafted. Maybe it was due to the unique issues teams had bringing in talent for workouts due to COVID-19. The guy is explosive and athletic as hell. I think we will see him breakout once teams start to defend the pass more. Jacksonville has some sneaky weapons on the team.
  • Washington Football Team Defense & Special Teams – Washington sacked Philly QB Carson Wentz eight times last week. Some of that may have been the Eagles perceived weak offensive line and a lot of that has to do with rookie DE Chase Young. The guy is going to be a superstar. I know Arizona put up some crooked numbers against the Niners, but San Francisco just couldn’t get their pass rush going against QB Kyler Murray. Washington are fast enough at the line and will double-team WR DeAndre Hopkins.
  • WR Parris Campbell (Indianapolis Colts) – I listed Campbell here last week and he didn’t disappoint in last week’s contest. Colts QB Philip Rivers targeted him nine times and Campbell had six receptions for 71 yards. He had as many targets as WR T.Y. Hilton and was second on the team with six receptions (RB Nyheim Hines had eight receptions with eight targets). The Colts will need to throw to succeed against the Titans on Sunday.
  • QB Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons) – Atlanta loaded the team with some elite receivers for Falcons QB Matt Ryan. He targeted his top three receivers 12 times each and they all caught nine passes. He even tried to get new TE Hayden Hurst into the game with five targets. Atlanta’s defense failed Ryan and they lost to Seattle 38-25 on Sunday. He will pass often against the Cowboys.

SIT’EM

  • RB Adrian Peterson (Detroit Lions) – Peterson will probably be the most-added running back this week after his unexpected performance last week against the Bears. The 35-year-old running back enjoyed a second-act in Washington, but is a shell of the same player he was in his prime with the Vikings. He had good games with Washington, but back-to-back good performances were quite rare. I also expect the Lions to use running backs Kerryon Johnson and D’Andre Swift more and more. Peterson had the hot hand in Week 1, but if the Packers crowd the box early when Peterson is in the game, he will struggle.
  • QB Deshaun Watson (Houston Texans) – Watson really missed WR DeAndre Hopkins on Thursday night against the Chiefs. He was just looking for WR Will Fuller V all game and just couldn’t find WRs Brandin Cooks or Randall Cobb. He needed a second-option and none was found. My guess is that Watson will adjust, but that will take time. He faces Baltimore this week and that’s just a bad matchup for him. The Ravens made Browns QB Baker Mayfield look awful. I would rather start Cam Newton or Aaron Rodgers over Watson this week.
  • WR Jarvis Landry (Cleveland Browns) – Landry suffered a setback with surgically-repaired hip. He didn’t practice on Tuesday, which isn’t a great outlook on his availability for Thursday night’s game against the Bengals. If he’s banged up, I’d rather not risk playing him right now. I’d be more comfortable with WRs Parris Campbell, Darius Slayton or Diontae Johnson.
  • RB Leonard Fournette (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – It doesn’t bode well for your future when you had less rushing yards on more attempts than Tom Brady. Fournette’s five attempts for five yards just didn’t cut it. I didn’t get the fantasy hype before last week’s game and it’s even more clear now. Fournette is a distant backup to Ronald Jones II.
  • QB Carson Wentz (Philadelphia Eagles) – Philly’s offensive line is going to be trouble for the often-injured quarterback. He was sacked eight times last week and he will need to get the ball out of his hands earlier. I wasn’t high on Wentz before the season and after last week’s game, I’d rather start QBs Gardner Minshew or  Ryan Tannehill over him.
  • WR Randall Cobb (Houston Texans) – It’s a bit taxing to pick some bad wide receiver fantasy plays that stand out. Any receiver can have a bad week and sometimes there’s just a stud defensive back that can eliminate a good WR from the gameplan. I’m going to piggyback on what I said about Texans QB Deshaun Watson. He just didn’t look for other receivers enough in last week’s game. Cobb was barely involved and maybe there’s no chemistry there. It could be a bad week, but I’m rolling the dice that Cobb and Watson may just not be a good fit.
  • TE Jimmy Graham (Chicago Bears) – I have a feeling Graham could be listed here often this year. He was overhyped this preseason like it was 2014 all over again (I wish, 2020 blows!). Graham did have a touchdown catch, but he could be touchdown-dependent this year. Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky did target him seven times, but many were just bad passes. This downgrade has a lot to do with Trubisky’s passing ability as much as it does Graham’s skills diminishing.
  • Houston Texans Defense & Special Teams – I feel like I’m beating up on the Texans a lot, but it’s just because they are facing Baltimore this week. They start off the season facing two of the best teams in the NFL. They are going to come out of this battered and bruised. I wouldn’t start the Texans defense against Ravens QB Lamar Jackson. I’m a big believer in streaming defenses, so I’d pick up New Orleans or Washington this week.
  • RB Frank Gore (New York Jets) – Now that Jets RB Le’Veon Bell has hit the IR with a torn hamstring, it could be tempting to add the ageless wonder. I don’t see him having a great game against the Niners. The Jets will also play running backs Josh Adams and the newly-signed Kalen Ballage as well. I think it will be more of a committee situation. I don’t see any of those backs doing much damage against one of the better defenses in the NFL.
