2019 NFL Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 5

The Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins are on bye during Week 5. Sadly, this means that you won’t have an easy team for a fantasy defense this week.

We are only through four games and we’ve lost around a 1/3rd of the starting quarterbacks due to injuries and ineffectiveness. We lost more last week with Mitchell Trubisky (injury) and Case Keenum (garbage throws) getting replaced during the games.

Which backup quarterbacks are worth a roster spot?

Here is our Fantasy Football Sit/Start for Week 5 of the 2019 NFL season…and enjoy our awesome MS Paint masterpiece of QB Philip Rivers of the Los Angeles Chargers.

I want to explain what I mean by “sit” and “start.” Of course you are going to start some of the guys i say to bench this week, because you probably used high draft picks or a lot of money in an auction for them. My ‘sit’ players are guys I am just not completely sold that they will have good weeks. If you have a guy that you are on the fence about, maybe this will help you pick between the players.

START’EM

  • QB Philip Rivers (Los Angeles Chargers) – The Chargers face the Broncos this week, who will be without LB Bradley Chubb for the rest of the season. Rivers will still have to deal with LB Von Miller and CB Chris Harris, but may stay upright for most of the game. The line can now double Von Miller and just have to deal with Harris draping WR Keenan Allen. I still think Rivers is an underrated QB and should have a lot of success checking down to slot receivers and running backs.
  • WR A.J. Brown (Tennessee Titans) – The Falcons allowed the Titans to throw all over them. They face a more difficult defense this week with Buffalo coming to town. I don’t see Mariota having a ton of time to get WR Corey Davis involved much, but they can run some short slants to get Brown the ball. If they can get him the ball, he could do some damage with his legs. He’s worth a stream this week.
  • RB Darrel Williams (Kansas City Chiefs) – Williams has creeped up the depth chart with RB Damien Williams nursing a knee injury. Williams has even battled RB LeSean McCoy for touches. Touchdowns will be hard to predict for the Chiefs as they share redzone work, but Williams should be owned, especially if you’re running back is injured or on bye.
  • QB Jacoby Brissett (Indianapolis Colts) – The Colts will need to throw to keep up with the Chiefs offense. My guess is that Kansas City will get the lead early and Indy will need to just keep up. Brissett should have WR T.Y. Hilton back from injury. The Chiefs have allowed some very nice fantasy numbers to pretty average opposing QBs.
  • Minnesota Vikings Defense & Special Teams – The Vikings have one of the best overall defenses in the NFL. They face a team with a rookie quarterback, a backup running back, and a slew of average wide receivers…the Vikings should be licking their lips
  • RB Austin Ekeler (Los Angeles Chargers) – A lot of people are bailing from Ekeler now that RB Melvin Gordon is back with the team. He’s still going to get a ton of touches, and especially targets this week against the Broncos. He’s still worth keeping on your roster.
  • WR Tyler Boyd (Cincinnati Bengals) – Boyd didn’t get his usual amount of targets last game, but the table is set for him to have a killer fantasy week against the Cardinals. Arizona is letting opposing QBs go off against them. Only the Miami Dolphins allow more fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. The Bengals lost WR John Ross last week to a shoulder injury, and they are still without WR A.J. Green. Boyd will be QB Andy Dalton’s #1 option and he should have a monster game against the Cardinals.
  • TE Dawson Knox (Buffalo Bills) – No one owned Knox at the start of the season. He is creeping up the rankings thanks to back-to-back weeks of three catches and 50+ yards. Knox may not be your guys in super shallow leagues, but if your TE is injured or on bye (i.e. T.J. Hockenson), Knox is worth a stream this week.
  • TE Will Dissly (Seattle Seahawks) – I’ve been on the Dissly bandwagon all season. His ownership is finally jumping over 60%, and should be near 100%. He has QB Russell Wilson’s eye and has scored four touchdowns the last three weeks. If he’s still available in your league, jump on him.
  • Baltimore Ravens Defense & Special Teams – Ravens aren’t usually an auto-start against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but their offense have looked pretty damn sad so far this year. RB James Conner is a shell of the back that took over for RB Le’Veon Bell last year. Teams are stacking the box and forcing QB Mason Rudolph to beat them.
  • RB Jordan Howard (Philadelphia Eagles) – The Eagles have used Howard in the redzone a lot the last two weeks. He’s a much better option there, even though he may not get the cumulative yards. He has scored four touchdowns the last two weeks and should get most of the redzone touches against the Jets.
  • WR Diontae Johnson (Pittsburgh Steelers) [DEEP LEAGUE SLEEPER] Johnson is benefiting from the quarterback change. QB Mason Rudolph has been looking for Johnson more than the receiver most thought he’d look for, James Washington. Johnson will be covered by Baltimore’s nickel corner and should have the advantage there.

SIT’EM

  • RB Latavius Murray (New Orleans Saints) – Many thought Murray would take over Mark Ingram’s role on the Saints, but he’s not the powerback they needed. His role has decreased over the last couple weeks and now he should only be owned in the deepest of leagues.
  • WR Will Fuller (Houston Texans) – I had high expectations for Fuller this season. He has great chemistry with QB Deshaun Watson, but it’s just not clicking this year. There will be a week or two this season that he will go off, but he’s a boom-or-bust receiver, like Jets WR Robby Anderson.
  • QB Gardner Minshew (Jacksonville Jaguars) – Minshew is a talented quarterback, but he’s still pretty much in ‘game manager’ mode. He has the skills to turn it up when needed, like last week, but don’t expect huge fantasy outputs going forward. He could be a decent streaming option, but I wouldn’t start him against the Panthers.
  • RB Miles Sanders (Philadelphia Eagles) – There’s a lot of buzz about Sanders, but I don’t see it right now. He isn’t getting the redzone work, even though he has the talent to handle that role. If he’s not getting touchdowns, Sanders is getting the work in-between the 20’s, but RB Jordan Howard will get nearly all the rushing touchdowns.
  • WR Phillip Dorsett (New England Patriots) – A ton of people added Dorsett last week thinking he would take over Antonio Brown’s role in New England…that shit didn’t happen at all. He only had two catches against Buffalo, but is expected to have a better game against Washington this week. He’s not worth a roster spot in a crowded wide receiver corps in New England.
  • RB Darrell Henderson (Los Angeles Rams) – Henderson is still owned in nearly 25% of all leagues…and he only has one carry way back in Week 1. The Rams have Henderson on the shelf as an insurance plan in case RB Todd Gurley breaks down by the end of the season. I don’t see the Rams using him much unless they absolutely need him. Drop him and pick up Darrel Williams or Jordan Howard.
  • TE Trey Burton (Chicago Bears) – Bears are travelling to London and teams usually look pretty bad early Sunday. QB Mitchell Trubisky is dealing with a shoulder injury and may not play. Chicago’s offense may look just as bland as they have all season. Some people thought QB Chase Daniel helped the Bears offense once he came in, but I didn’t see much improvement.
  • Arizona Cardinals Defense & Special Teams – The Cardinals defense are a longshot fantasy play this week against the Bengals. People tend to stream defenses against QB Andy Dalton, but it may not work well this weekend. The Cardinals may sack Dalton a few times, but they will likely give up some passing touchdowns while Patrick Peterson is out serving his suspension.
  • QB Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills) – I’ve been negative towards Allen since college. I’ve never thought to add him to any fantasy league. He’s just too inaccurate and I don’t see him ever being a big fantasy stud. I don’t know why he’s owned in 2/3rds of all leagues. The Titans has a stout defense and he will have another below average fantasy week.
  • WR Chris Conley (Jacksonville Jaguars) – Conley was targeted a lot the first two weeks, but he’s barely been thrown to the last two games. Jacksonville had a lot of success running the ball for the first time this year and they will go hard at it against the Panthers.
