2019 NFL Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 2

Gardner Minshew dotted final fantasyI am battling one hell of a flu bug this week. I actually started this post on Tuesday and had to quit due to everything spinning.

Now that I am feeling a little better, I’ve still only eaten saltine crackers since Monday, let’s crank out some fantasy football and betting posts!

I had a few studs and duds with my picks last week. I’m feeling better now that I’ve seen what roles from of the new players played for their teams in Week 1.

Can Gardner Minshew become a stud for the Jaguars?

Here is our Fantasy Football Sit/Start for Week 2 of the 2019 NFL season…and enjoy our awesome MS Paint masterpiece of QB Gardner Minshew of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

I want to explain what I mean by “sit” and “start.” Of course you are going to start some of the guys i say to bench this week, because you probably used high draft picks or a lot of money in an auction for them. My ‘sit’ players are guys I am just not completely sold that they will have good weeks. If you have a guy that you are on the fence about, maybe this will help you pick between the players.

START’EM

  • QB Gardner Minshew (Jacksonville Jaguars) – Minshew has an arm on him and after Nick Foles left with a broken clavicle, he hit 88% of his passes an threw for 275 yards against a solid Chiefs team. He faces the Texans this week and I expect him to have a better than expected fantasy output. If you’re on the fence about starting QBs with poor performances in Week 1 (Mitchell Trubisky or Jameis Winston), you may want to take a chance on Minshew on Sunday.
  • WR Marquise Brown (Baltimore Ravens) – I doubt Ravens QB Lamar Jackson will have an easier time throwing the ball than when he faces the Dolphins, but Brown should have a solid fantasy week against the Cardinals on Sunday.
  • RB Derrick Henry (Tennessee Titans) – The Chargers should have just kept feeding the ball to running backs Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson. The game wouldn’t have went to overtime. Henry should be able to smash the Colts D-line for a nice fantasy output.
  • QB Matt Ryan (Oakland Raiders) – Ryan pooped the bed against the solid Vikings secondary in Week 1. He still threw for 304 yards, but he turned the ball over twice. He should rebound this weekend against Philly.
  • Carolina Panthers Defense & Special Teams – Bucs QB Jameis Winston threw two pick-sixes last week. Neither were really his fault, as the ball just bounced the wrong way. I believe that sometimes teams can just be a bit cursed when it comes to that. I don’t have faith in Tampa Bay’s offense against Carolina.
  • RB Dalvin Cook (Minnesota Vikings) – Cook was a stud last week against the Falcons. The Packers have a younger defense, but I still believe Cook will have the blocks to have a big game.
  • WR John Brown (Buffalo Bills) – This was one of my best calls from last week. Buffalo QB Josh Allen doesn’t have an accurate arm, but speedy receivers tend to help inaccurate passers look a little better. Brown should do it again this week against the Giants.
  • TE T.J. Hockenson (Detroit Lions) – Hock was exactly what Lions QB Matthew Stafford needed. He missed having possession receivers for most of last season. You pair Hock with WR Danny Amendola and Stafford looked like he was back in his prime. He should have another good one this week against the Chargers.
  • TE Darren Waller (Oakland Raiders) – Oakland QB Derek Carr doesn’t have a lot of talent at receiver. Waller really works in their offense as he is an athletic tight end that can usually have the advantage against tight ends in coverage. The Raiders play the Chiefs this weekend and I have a feeling the Raiders will be playing from behind most game, so they will need to throw. I’m not sure how well the rest of the Raiders receivers/tight ends will do, but Waller might have the best match-up.
  • Chicago Bears Defense & Special Teams – The Bears should have a huge advantage against the lowly Broncos offense.
  • WR Michael Gallup (Dallas Cowboys) – Now that teams have to focus on WR Amari Cooper and TE Jason Witten, Gallup is getting some open looks. He should have many opportunities against Washington’s secondary.
  • RB Raheem Mostert (San Francisco 49ers) [DEEP LEAGUE SLEEPER] Niners RB Tevin Coleman will miss an unknown amount of time, and RB Matt Breida will still be splitting the carries with someone…and that someone is Mostert. He received some carries with Breida last week and I don’t expect RB Jeff Wilson Jr. to see much time on the field.
  • TE Jimmy Graham (Green Bay Packers) – Graham had six targets against the Bears last week. It was better than I expected and will face another tough linebackers/secondary versus the Vikings. He’s worth a start this week.

SIT’EM

  • RB Todd Gurley (Los Angeles Rams) – I mentioned last week that I loved Malcolm Brown over Darrell Henderson. I didn’t expect Brown to even trump Gurley when it came to red zone carries. The Rams must really be worried about wearing out their star running back before the playoffs.
  • WR Dante Pettis (San Francisco 49ers) – Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan was vocal about the effort Pettis showed during training camp. Many thought it was just a motivational tactic and it would spark something in him. Well, Shanahan didn’t even give him much of a shot to prove him wrong. It seems like he lost his spot in the receiver rotation, at least during Week 1. I’ll be surprised if Pettis has much fantasy output after a lackluster Week 1.
  • QB Jameis Winston (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – Some pointed to Winston as a breakout candidate since he’s on a contract year, and his new head coach is known as a quarterback guru. It didn’t work out for Winston in Week 1 and he has a tougher matchup this week. I’d rather go with Jags QB Gardner Minshew this week.
  • RB Saquon Barkley (New York Giants) – This is a bit bold, but I like the Bills front-seven. They did their job against RB Le’Veon Bell last week and Barkley didn’t impress me much last week either. The Bill will definitely stack the box in this one.
  • WR Antonio Brown (New England Patriots) – Brown is surrounded by drama right now. He’s just too risky to play because he could be suspended before kickoff (or something worse). If all works out for him, I still don’t think the ceiling is high for him. He will have spent just a week with the Patriots and they could look to just work him in slowly.
  • RB Adrian Peterson (Washington Redskins) – Redskins head coach Jay Gruden healthy-scratched Peterson last week. I have a feeling that he will give running backs Chris Thompson and Wendell Smallwood every opportunity to take over some of Derrius Guice’s role. Peterson should play, but I don’t see him killing it out there in fantasy.
  • TE Jordan Reed (Washington Redskins) – Reed is dealing with a concussion right now. We’ve seen during his career that the Redskins have been extremely cautious with him in the past. If he’s the least bit questionable, you might as well write him off. TE Vernon Davis will have a big role if Reed sits.
  • San Francisco 49ers Defense & Special Teams – The Niners benefited from a couple opportune bounces in their last game that resulted in defensive touchdowns. The face the Bengals this week, and even though they may end up with a turnover or two, there are better defenses out there to start in Week 2.
  • QB Derek Carr (Oakland Raiders) – Football Focus rated Carr as the #1 quarterback last week. I watched that game and I’d really have to pin a lot of that on the Broncos defense. He played very good, but I don’t see him having similar success this weekend against the Chiefs.
  • WR Robby Anderson (New York Jets) – Anderson is really only good in fantasy when the deep ball is there for him. He’s currently nursing a calf injury that could affect his speed. Jets WR Quincy Enunwa is out for the year and Anderson should get more targets, but the calf injury really affected his speed last week.
