2018 NFL Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 4

How are your fantasy teams doing this season? Are you prepared for the first week with byes?

The Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins are the first teams with a week off during the 2018 NFL season. You could be in the market for a streaming running back if you own running backs  Christian McCaffrey or Adrian Peterson.

Now that rookie quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen are set to start their first NFL games, which rookie quarterback is worth a roster spot?

Where do Bills QB Josh Allen and Jets QB Sam Darnold rank among the four rookie starting quarterbacks?

Here is our Fantasy Football Sit/Start for Week 4 of the 2018 NFL season…and enjoy our awesome MS Paint masterpiece of Cleveland Browns QB Bake Mayfield.

I want to explain what I mean by “sit” and “start.” Of course you are going to start some of the guys i say to bench this week, because you probably used high draft picks or a lot of money in an auction for them. My ‘sit’ players are guys I am just not completely sold that they will have good weeks. If you have a guy that you are on the fence about, maybe this will help you pick between the players.

START’EM

  • QB Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns) – Did you own Niners QB Jimmy Garoppolo and need a new QB1 or QB2? Mayfield would be a perfect replacement for him. Also, the Panthers and Redskins are on bye and Mayfield would be a good streaming option. Mayfield has a talented group of ball catchers at his disposal. WR Jarvis Landry and TE David Njoku are two huge targets. Also, WR Antonio Callaway is a speedy deep threat that was open deep often versus the Jets. Mayfield can make the throws QB Tyrod Taylor just can’t consistently make. Mayfield should have a solid fantasy week against the Raiders.
  • WR Antonio Callaway (Cleveland Browns) – This is the second week we listed Callaway in this section. Now that the Browns traded WR Josh Gordon, it opened up a ton of targets for the young receiver. He will get plenty of one-on-one coverage with Landry attracting double teams. Mayfield has a big arm and should target Callaway deep a few times per game. Callaway could creep into a WR2 spot, but he’s a solid flex play right now.
  • RB Javorius Allen (Baltimore Ravens) – Allen started the year out in a time-share with RB Alex Collins. Allen has outperformed Collins this season. Allen is also getting more work in the red zone. Another thing going in Allen’s favor is that he is the better receiver of the two backs. He’s the Ravens running back I’d want right now.
  • QB Andy Dalton (Cincinnati Bengals) – It’s been a long time since I’ve recommended Dalton. He has been pretty bad the last two years, but he’s off to a hot start. He’s limiting turnovers and has been letting WR A.J. Green win games for him. The Bengals face the Falcons this week, which has an average secondary. They don’t have much of a pass rush and Dalton should have plenty of time in the pocket.
  • RB James White (New England Patriots) – Now that running backs Jeremy Hill and Rex Burkhead are lost for the season with injuries, James White finds himself as the starter in New England. The Pats still have rookie RB Sony Michel, but White is the trusted back on the team. Head coach Bill Belichick doesn’t have a good track record when it comes to rookie running backs. White should get a ton of work. He faces the Dolphins who have allowed a lot of catches out of the backfield this year.
  • Los Angeles Chargers Defense & Special Teams – The Chargers defense hasn’t been as good as expected with DE Joey Bosa out. They are given a nice match-up this week with QB C.J. Beathard starting in place of the injured QB Jimmy Garoppolo. Beathard didn’t impress me when he has some starts last season. I can’t imagine he has improved much since. I don’t expect the Niners to score many points this weekend.
  • WR Will Fuller V (Houston Texans) – Fuller had huge numbers last season when QB Deshaun Watson was promoted. His numbers fell off when Watson suffered a season-ending injury. The pair started where they left off and Fuller is back as a solid WR2. He is getting some deep balls with WR DeAndre Hopkins becoming more like a possession receiver with Watson under center. The Colts secondary is young and Fuller should have another solid fantasy game.
  • TE Vance McDonald (Pittsburgh Steelers) – It took a long time for McDonald to get healthy, but he announced his return to form with a huge stiff arm to Chris Conte last week. He’s a big target and could be the most athletic tight end the Steelers have had in a long time. He’s still splitting playing time with TE Jesse James, but he could earn the larger share of the split soon. I still think he’s worth an add in twelve-team leagues.
  • TE Austin Hooper (Atlanta Falcons) – Hooper hasn’t been the poster boy of consistency, but he has a nice match-up against the Bengals. Cincinnati is allowing 70+ yards to opposing tight ends and above average PPR fantasy points. There are ‘sexier’ options out there on the waiver wire, but he’s a safe add this week.
  • Seattle Seahawks Defense & Special Teams – The Seahawks looked a little Legion of Boom-ish against the Cowboys last week. They had five sacks, two interceptions and a fumble receovery. The Cowboys offensive line is banged up, but it’s still a huge accomplishment. Seattle faces rookie QB Josh Rosen in his first NFL start of his career. He is a gunslinger and while at UCLA, he wasn’t afraid to throw into double coverage. Seattle’s defense should have another good fantasy week.
  • RB Kerryon Johnson (Detroit Lions) – Johnson started the year slow, but he played really well against the Patriots last week. It’s been a few years since Detroit has had dependable running back. He outperformed RB LeGarrette Blount and will be fighting for the larger share of the carries. I could see Johnson earning a larger role and Blount could go back to the role he had in New England, a goal line back.
  • QB Case Keenum (Denver Broncos) – Keenum faces the Chiefs on Monday Night Football this week. The Chiefs have put up a ton of offense this year, but they’ve need to do that as their defense has struggled this year. Keenum has the kind of arm that could do damage against their loose defense. He would be a solid streaming choice if you own the bye week’d quarterbacks Cam Newton or Alex Smith.
  • WR Quincy Enunwa (New York Jets) – Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold has taken a liking to WR Quincy Enunwa. He looks for him a lot and appears to have surpassed WR Robby Anderson as the go-to receiver in the offense. Enunwa is emerging as a must-own in all leagues, especially if he has another double-digit fantasy output.
  • RB Austin Ekeler (Los Angeles Chargers) – Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is in no threat to lose the starting job, but Ekeler is getting a lot of work as his backup. He is being used (sort of) like Bears RB Tarik Cohen. Ekeler is a third-down back, but he getting some work on different downs, and is being used in creative ways. The Chargers could get a lot of work out of him if their game against the Niners is out of reach.

SIT’EM

  • WR Robby Anderson (New York Jets) – Anderson may now the third-best fantasy wide receiver on the Jets. He was a really good fantasy wide receiver last year, but the pending suspension for his off-the-field issues is hanging over his head. It’s almost as if the Jets don’t include him in the gameplan since they are expecting a suspension to be handed down any day now.
  • RB Isaiah Crowell (New York Jets) – Crowell is on the lower-end of starting running backs and he faces the Jaguars, which is among the best defenses in the National Football League. He had success last week against his former team (Cleveland), but I’d put him on the bench this week. There are better options on the waiver wire.
  • QB Blake Bortles (Jacksonville Jaguars) – Bortles is coming off a bad start in a loss to the Titans. He has been without RB Leonard Fournette and the offense has been through the air in his absence. The Jets secondary has pretty pretty darn good this year. They have only allowed three touchdown passes this season. I wouldn’t pick up Bortles to stream this week.
  • RB Marlon Mack (Indianapolis Colts) – Indy eased Mack into the game last week. He was given about the same level of work as the two rookie running backs on the team. The Colts face the Texans this week and I don’t expect much from the rusty running back who has been out since early this preseason.
  • WR Marquise Goodwin (San Francisco 49ers) – Goodwin’s fantasy stock shot up last season when he had instant chemistry with QB Jimmy Garoppolo. Now that his star quarterback is out for the year with a torn ACL, Goodwin’s fantasy stock just bottomed-out. Also, he has a bad match-up this week against the much-improved Chargers secondary.
  • RB Jamaal Williams (Green Bay Packers) – Williams has been splitting time with RB Aaron Jones. He is now losing the battle with Jones getting more carries and is averaging significantly more yards per carry. The Packers face the Bills this week, who stymied the Vikings backfield last week.
  • TE Dallas Goedert (Philadelphia Eagles) – Goedery was a trendy waiver wire add this week. He had seven catches and touchdown against the Colts. Don’t fall for the one-game performance as he is only gets a small fraction of the playing time behind Pro Bowl TE Zach Ertz.
  • Minnesota Vikings Defense & Special Teams – The Vikings were torched by the Bills last week. That sentence was hard to right as it was so unexpected. They face the Rams this week and if the Vikings D plays anything like they did last week, the Rams may put up 50 points. I don’t see that happening, but there are better options to start this week.
  • QB Andrew Luck (Indianapolis Colts) – Luck may not be a very good fantasy quarterback this season. He is still shaking off the rust and he doesn’t have a ton of weapons around him. He faces the Texans this week and it’s not an ideal match-up. Luck is just a streaming quarterback option this year.
  • RB Rashaad Penny (Seattle Seahawks) – I was on the Penny bandwagon to start the season, but it looks like RB Chris Carson has a firm grasp on the starting job. At the very least, I thought Penny would get some third-down work, but he hasn’t done much with the touches he has received. It could be time to dump Penny if he doesn’t see a bump in touches against the Cardinals.
