No matter how well you think you did in your fantasy draft, there will always be a few fantasy studs that sneak through without being drafted.
Two of the best fantasy quarterbacks so far this season probably went without being selected.
Tampa Bay QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is slinging darts for the Bucs. He was expected to only play the first couple games during QB Jameis Winston’s suspension…but that could change if he stays hot. He has led the Bucs to a 2-0 start with a ton of fantasy production.
The other quarterback is Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes. He had a better chance of being drafted than Fitzpatrick, but if he was taken in your draft, he would have been someone’s QB2. He is putting up insane numbers for the Chiefs.
Will both surprise quarterbacks stay hot this week?
Here is our Fantasy Football Sit/Start for Week 3 of the 2018 NFL season…and enjoy our awesome MS Paint masterpiece of Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.
I want to explain what I mean by “sit” and “start.” Of course you are going to start some of the guys i say to bench this week, because you probably used high draft picks or a lot of money in an auction for them. My ‘sit’ players are guys I am just not completely sold that they will have good weeks. If you have a guy that you are on the fence about, maybe this will help you pick between the players.
I didn’t want to make this SIT’EM section very long since there’s no need to drop guys, because hey, it’s the last week of the season. Just make sure the guys you are playing aren’t getting rested and you should be okay this week.
START’EM
- QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – I would normally stay away from quarterbacks against the Steelers, but they let Browns QB Tyrod Taylor and Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes light them up in back-to-back weeks. Fitzpatrick may not match those performances in the first two weeks, but he is still a top-ten fantasy quarterback option this week. He has the most talented receivers he’s ever played with, so even if a ball is a tad off-taget, they will just go get it.
- WR Antonio Callaway (Cleveland Browns) – Now that the Browns traded WR Josh Gordon (maybe?), it opens up more permanent playing time for young WR Antonio Callaway. He has some Josh Gordon-esque risk, since he also has a tendency to be his own worst enemy off-the-field, but the guy is talented. He should be a nice deep threat when WR Jarvis Landry is double-teamed. I think he’s worth an add in all leagues.
- RB Austin Ekeler (Los Angeles Chargers) – Ekeler was one of my sleeper picks this preseason. I just liked the role he played last season. He has good hands and if Melvin Gordon is having ‘one of those games’, he can step right in and contribute. Gordon had ‘one of those games’ last week. Ekeler was still able to be a playmaker on the ground and through the air. He had 77 rushing yards and 21 receiving. It was his second week in-a-row with double digit fantasy points. He is one of the best fantasy back-up running backs in the NFL. He faces a tough Rams defense, but Ekeler has more options than just the ground game to be fantasy-relevant.
- QB Kirk Cousins (Minnesota Vikings) – There aren’t many quarterbacks I love this week more than Cousins. The Bills have been getting roasted through the air this season and lost their best cornerback to retirement. Cousins is already a top-tier fantasy quarterback and this is a really nice match-up for him.
- RB Tevin Coleman (Atlanta Falcons) – Coleman always seems to come up big when RB Devonta Freeman is out with an injury. He will share snaps with RB Ito Smith, but Coleman will be in the game 70% of the snaps. He will get a lot of volume against the Saints defense.
- Dallas Cowboys Defense & Special Teams – The Cowboys are 1-1 on the season, but have only allowed 29 points in two games. They are a good defense when they can get pressure on the quarterback. The Seahawks offense might be one of the worst in the league. Seattle QB Russell Wilson has already been sacked 12 games and has thrown three interceptions. The Cowboys defense is a smart play this week.
- WR Nelson Agholor (Philadelphia Eagles) – Philly will have their starting quarterback under center against the Colts. QB Carson Wentz has been out since late last season and watched from the sidelines the first two weeks of the year. Agholor was a popular target for Wentz last season. He’s always lining up against Colts CB Kenny Moore, who has been torched this season.
- TE George Kittle (San Francisco 49ers) – Kittle is a top-ten fantasy tight end and should have a productive day against the Chiefs. Kansas City has allowed the third-most fantasy points to opposing tight ends. Niners QB Jimmy Garoppolo needs to focus on reliable targets and Kittle seems to come through often.
- TE O.J. Howard (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – The Bucs has two quality pass-catching tight ends (Cameron Brate & O.J. Howard). They split time last season and both were productive. Brate’s inability to block hurt his shot of running away with the starting job. Howard’s blocking is above-average, which earns him more playing time. Howard has been productive in fantasy and is widening the gap over Brate. The Steelers have given up double-digits to opposing tight ends this season.
- New York Jets Defense & Special Teams – The Jets started the year out on fire. In Week 1 against the Lions, the defense had five interceptions and took one of those back for a touchdowns. The lost to the Dolphins last week, but still managed four sacks and two fumble recoveries. They face the Browns this week. The Browns have a lot of young players on offense and they could make some mistakes. I think the Jets are a top-ten fantasy defense this week.
- RB James Conner (Pittsburgh Steelers) – I know you spent $70 on Le’Veon Bell in your fantasy auction, but the dude hasn’t reported to the team. The Steelers basically just implanted Conner in their regular gameplan. I don’t think they changed a thing on offense without Bell. Conner has stepped in and has done enough to make Bell’s absence nearly unnoticeable. The Bucs have been scoring at-will this season, but their defense has allowed a ton as well. Conner should have another top-five fantasy running back performances.
- RB Javorius Allen (Baltimore Ravens) – The Ravens have used a two-headed backfield with running backs Alex Collins and Javoirus Allen. They have split time, but Allen appears to have crept into a slight playing-time advantage. He’s a better receiving back, but Collins has been more elusive on the ground. Allen should still be owned in all 12-team leagues.
- WR Quincy Enunwa (New York Jets) – Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold has taken a liking to WR Quincy Enunwa. He looks for him a lot and appears to have surpassed WR Robby Anderson as the go-to receiver in the offense. Anderson is now just a deep threat for the Jets. Enunwa is emerging as a must-own in all leagues, especially if he has another double-digit fantasy output.
- RB Corey Clement (Philadelphia Eagles) DEEP LEAGUE ALERT – Eagles RB Jay Ajayi is nursing a back injury. Clement took advantage of his injury and was a jack-of-all-trades against the Bucs last week. He split playing time with RB Wendell Smallwood, but Clement was the most productive. If Ajayi and Darren Sproles are both out against the Colts, Clement is worth an add.
SIT’EM
- WR Josh Gordon (New England Patriots) – Gordon is a trendy start this week. I don’t see Pats head coach Bill Belichick starting him right away. I think he will be a productive player for New England, but it may take a couple weeks before earning Belichick’s trust. He could be a Randy Moss clone for QB Tom Brady, but give it a few weeks.
- RB Derrick Henry (Tennessee Titans) – Most people thought Henry would be the #1 back this season. The Titans signed free agent RB Dion Lewis, so at the very least, Henry should play most of the game. The split is more even than expected…with Lewis playing more snaps last week. Henry isn’t a good start this week, as he faces a tough Jaguars defense.
- RB Ronald Jones (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – Jones was a healthy scratch again last week. Running backs Peyton Barger and Jacquizz Rodgers got the nod over him. He averaged less than a yard per rush attempt this preseason, so it’s not too surprising. They used the 38th pick overall for him, so they are taking the slow approach. I don’t expect Jones to be very productive (or get much playing time), unless an injury forces the Bucs hand.
- WR Allen Hurns (Dallas Cowboys) – Hurns was expected to take over the ‘Dez Bryant role’ in Dallas, but he hasn’t come close. WR Cole Beasley is the #1 receiver and Hurns is only getting 10% of targets so far. WR Deonte Thompson is even getting almost double that amount of targets. It’s time to drop Hurns.
- RB Royce Freeman (Denver Broncos) – It appears that Freeman is losing playing time to undrafted rookie RB Phillip Lindsay. Freeman appears to have used all his ‘speed burst’ this preseason. He looks flat and Lindsay is doing more with his snaps. It’s time to drop Freeman for Lindsay.
- TE Tyler Eifert (Cincinnati Bengals) – It’s been a long time since TE Tyler Eifert has been healthy for two games in a row. One would think Bengals QB Andy Dalton would take advantage of Eifert’s good run of health. Unfortunately, Eifert has only managed to garner seven targets through the first two weeks of the season. He doesn’t appear to be a big part of the offense right now.
- Miami Dolphins Defense & Special Teams – The Dolphins have been an underrated fantasy defense through the first two weeks of the season. They had three picks against the Titans in Week 1 and then followed that up with a three sack & two interception performance against the Jets. They face the Raiders this week. Oakland’s offensive line is pretty darn good and I don’t see the Dolphins penetrating it much to earn fantasy points. I would sit the Dolphins defense the next two weeks (they face the Patriots in Week 4).
- WR Mike Williams (Los Angeles Chargers) – Williams is a much-improved wide receiver so far this season. He’s a talented young receiver, but he faces a tall task this weekend. He will go head-to-head against Rams CB Marcus Peters. I don’t see Williams getting too many targets due to the match-up.
