The Indianapolis Colts did have the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, but traded down to sixth for a king’s ransom. They traded the Jets and received the 6th, 37th, and 49th overall pick in this year’s draft and a second-round pick next year.
The Colts are in a great position as they aren’t in need of a quarterback…but they need just about everything else. Their former general manager was horrible at evaluating college talent and most of his picks have already flunked out of the league.
There are four or five quarterbacks that teams have circled as potential top-ten picks. There are eight or nine teams that are in need of a young quarterback. The Colts sixth pick could end up being a valuable trade piece as they could move another pick to acquire many more picks.
Here are a few options the Indianapolis Colts have for the sixth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
DE Bradley Chubb – North Carolina State – This would be a best-case scenario for the Colts. They would have probably taken him third if they would have kept that pick. They are in desperate need of a pass rush. They are moving to a 4-3 defense and Chubb would move into a role that Dwight Freeney occupied during the Colts glory years. He could be a game-changer and make their inexperienced secondary look much better as quarterbacks would feel pressure.
RB Saquon Barkley – Penn State – The Colts also have a huge need at running back. Barkley is the best running back in the draft. It’s unknown if he will even be available as the Giants could take him at #2 or he could be attractive enough for a team to trade up ahead of the Colts to draft the young running back. If he is available at #6, the Colts will need to decide if Barkley is THAT much of a difference maker than a guy they could take in the early second-round. USC’s Ronald Jones, LSU’s Derrius Guice and Georgia’s Sony Michael could all be available when they draft at #36 & #37.
Trade Down – This would be an option if Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield drops and would be available #6 or if a team is very high on UCLA QB Josh Rosen. The entire league knows the Colts wouldn’t mind moving down again and gaining more picks. The Colts could clean up if Mayfield drops and have multiple teams bidding on the phone while time expires on their pick.
The Colts need a ton of picks as their depth is atrocious. Although, I think Chubb would be the best choice if they keep the pick. The Colts haven’t had a pass rush since Robert Mathis was healthy. They couldn’t take advantage of having talented cornerbacks as opposing quarterbacks had all the time in the world to throw the ball. Many of those cornerbacks have left, so a pass rush is important as every for the Colts.
