This is an interesting match-up. The team that comes out of this contest alive will be a tough out in this NCAA Tournament.
Kentucky missed out on a lot of the five-star recruits this past recruiting season, but they still managed to suit up a very good team. They are young and inconsistent at times, but they are long and can disrupt inside-scoring attempts.
Davidson was a long-shot to receive an at-large big and needed to win the Atlantic 10 Tournament. They cemented their spot by beating St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island on back-to-back days. Can they keep the upset train rolling?
Who do you think will win?
Do you have #5 Kentucky Wildcats or #12 Davidson Wildcats?
This is one of the most unpredictable teams Kentucky has had in the John Caliperi era. They lost out on a lot of recruits to Duke and other top programs, so Coach Cal doesn’t have the usual stacked roster full of NBA Lottery picks. He still has some future NBA players on the team, but they are less sure things like Anthony Davis or DeMarcus Cousins. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had an insane SEC Tournament and looks to be the most improved player down the stretch. Gilgeous-Alexander was a one-man offense in the SEC Tournament final against Tennessee.
Davidson is a dangerous team. They were winners of 11 of their last 13 games and upset both top teams in their conference tournament on their way to an automatic bid. The Wildcats have a streaky offense, but can put up points in a hurry. They rode their hot three-point shooting in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
The reason I brought up Davidson’s outside shooting threat is that Kentucky doesn’t really have the ability to match three-point shot for three-point shot. Their perimeter shooting is average at best, but Davidson may not be much of an inside-scoring threat against Kentucky. Davidson will need to live-and-die with the three-point shot. It could be an interesting game, but Kentucky’s defense should prevail.
Prediction: #5 Kentucky Wildcats
