With the NBA Finals now over, and the soccer season well and truly finished, many sports fans have retreated for the rest of the year, awaiting their favorites to return. This time of the year can seem like a bit of a drag when it comes to major sporting events. But look a little closer and you can soon see that the sporting calendar still has a lot to offer, especially for those who like to put their money where their mouth is.
One of the most popular times of the year for sports enthusiasts is during the Wimbledon tennis tournament in the U.K. from July 3rd -16th. People placing wagers for sports fans are on fire for these matches, as punters try to guess the match outcomes and the tournaments outright. This year’s men’s singles is set to be exceptionally close, with both Roger Federer and Andy Murray close favorites with 2/1 and 3/1, respectively. If you want to take a slight outside wager then Rafael Nadal is a good option.
If you want to watch or place a wager on a tennis game that is closer to home, then you’ll have to wait until September 29th to catch the U.S. Tennis Open in New York, which is also set to be an exciting event.
I know what some of you will be thinking by now. Where is the adrenaline? Without the NBA, how will you truly get your kicks? I recommend tuning in for the Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor fight on the August 26th. It should be legendary.
For anyone who hasn’t heard of this match-up, Mayweather is coming out of retirement to square off with UFCs McGregor, a man that has never actually had a boxing match in his life. Mixed martial arts trained McGregor will not be allowed to use kicks or groundwork, and will be bound by the rules of boxing, leading many to believe that Mayweather is a firm favorite to win, but if you want to take a chance on the outsider, then consider that McGregor is not to be taken lightly –he could pull it off!
Back to the green grass and relaxed atmosphere with a bit of golf. The next truly worthy event of the summer is the U.K. Open Championship on July 20th -23rd, the only major championship outside of U.S. soil, and the oldest in the world. The U.S. Championship is now finished, so this is the next best thing to place a wager on. Dustin Johnson is the current favorite with 17/2 odds on BetStars, but Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth are not far behind him. Additionally, many of the top golfers have similar odds, making for an interesting outright wager.
The U.S. PGA Championship will be the last of the four major tournaments and takes place in North Carolina on the August 10th.
You might be glad to know that soccer is back on the cards, too, with the 2017/18 Premier League season set to begin on the August 13th. Shortly after this, you can catch the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, starting with Group C matches between Malta and England and Lithuania and Scotland on September 1st. The regular NBA season starts once again on October 20th, and we can’t wait, but until then let’s kick back and enjoy the summer’s sporting events.
