Iowa State hung with some of the best teams in the country in the Big 12. They didn’t exactly stand out since Kansas and Baylor got all the press. The Cyclones will be a tough out in this tourney.
As a #12 seed, Nevada is automatically a popular upset pick. #5 seeds have fallen to a #12 seeds in bunches over the years. I’m not sure Nevada is in the same league as Iowa State, but anything is possible.
Can Nevada upset Iowa State in Milwaukee?
Who do you think will win? We help you fill out your bracket.
The Iowa State Cyclones come into the tournament as one of the oldest teams in the field. Most of their impact players are seniors, which I love. They have experience you can’t teach and they want to extend their collegiate careers. They won the Big 12 conference tournament after some early upsets. They have marquee wins over Kansas, Baylor, West Virginia and have a ton of close losses to the best teams in the country.
The Nevada Wolfpack pulled off one of the biggest upsets in recent NCAA Tourney history. In 2004 as a #15 seed, they beat the #2 seed Michigan State. They will be able to hang with Iowa State on the offensive end of the floor as well with Marcus Marshall, Cameron Oliver, Jordan Caroline and D.J. Fenner all averaging over 14 points per game. They aren’t as strong on defense, which could be the key to this game.
The Big 12 was one of the best conferences in the country and the fact that Iowa State won the conference tournament makes me question picking against them. Nevada is a very good Mountain West team, but I don’t think they can last an entire game matching buckets with Iowa State.
Prediction: #5 Iowa State Cyclones
