As a fan, you dread hearing “Player X visited Dr. James Andrews this morning”, because you know an athlete most likely suffered a major injury. He is the most famous orthopedic surgeon on Earth. He specializes in ulner collateral ligament reconstruction, otherwise known as Tommy John surgery, ACL reconstruction surgery, and other major procedures. He is also the team doctor for Auburn and Alabama universities and the NFL’s Washington Redskins.
Any Given Monday: Sports Injuries and How to Prevent Them, For Athletes, Parents, and Coaches – Based on My Life in Sports Medicine was written by Dr. Andrews with Don Yaeger. It’s an informative book on injuries in youth sports and methods to help reduce them.
Here is our review of Dr. Andrews’ book, Any Given Monday.Even though Dr. Andrews is best known for taking care of the world’s best baseball and football players, he is knowledgeable about injuries in a variety of sports. He breaks down common injuries in every major sports and ways to prevent them. He touches every sports from football to snowboarding to volleyball and wrestling.
This book is a must-have for any coaches of youth sports. It should be mandatory for every school to have a copy in its library.
After going through every major sport, he has a chapter about ways to prevent injuries in the future. He lists warm-up exercises and debunk myths about injuries. He personally changed my mind about doing proper warm-ups and cool-downs. It’s probably a reason why I always end up injuring myself after a few days in a row of cardio.
Former NFL players Junior Seau and Dave Duerson took their lives and their brains were studied. Both players suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition that causes dementia and other serious side effects. With the emphasis on former NFL players’ effected by CTE, the focus is not on youth sports. Dr. James Andrews makes it a priority to address concussions in youth sports. If they address it at an early age and teach them ways to prevent them, it may reduce the percentage of football players with CTE.
Like I said before, Any Given Monday is comprehensive handbook that every coach should own. If you want to buy a copy, Amazon has it at a very affordable price.
If you read this book, maybe you won’t be so scared when you hear his name on ESPN.
