Remember the Titans? If you don’t live in the state of Tennessee, it’s easy to do. They haven’t been good in awhile and honestly haven’t been on national television much either. They did select former Heisman trophy-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota with the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. That’s the biggest news since they gave Jeff Fisher the boot.
The Titans are in the unenviable position of being in the same division as the Indianapolis Colts. It’s hard to get into the playoffs when you’re getting lit up by Andrew Luck twice a year. They can’t blame the division much, since they do get to play Jacksonville twice as well.
How will Mariota fare in his rookie year?
Here is the 2015 NFL team preview for the Tennessee Titans.
2014 Win/Loss Record: 2-14
Key Additions: OLB Brian Orakpo, WR Harry Douglas, RB Terrance West, OT Byron Bell & S Da’Norris Searcy
Key Losses: QB Jake Locker, WR Nate Washington, TE Anthony Fasano, OT Michael Roos, OT Michael Oher, CB Perrish Cox, Bernard Pollard, KR Leon Washington & RB Shonn Greene
2015 Draft Picks: QB Marcus Mariota, WR Dorial Green-Beckham, OG Jeremiah Poutasi, DT Angelo Blackson, FB Jalston Fowler, RB David Cobb, OLB Deiontrez Mount, C Andy Gallik & WR Tre McBride
Non-Division Schedule: AFC East, NFC South & (Cleveland/Oakland)
Fantasy Sleeper: WR Dorial Green-Beckham – I loved him in college. He fell into some trouble off the field and he has been sitting on the sideline for over a year. He’s a huge target and has great hands. He could end up being a WR1 or WR2 by the end of the year. He’s most likely a bench player or flex option in deep leagues at the moment. He has major upside.
Offense – QB Marcus Mariota, RB Bishop Sankey, WR Kendall Wright, WR Harry Douglas, WR Dorial Green-Beckham, TE Craig Stevens, LT Taylor Lewan, LG Jamon Meredith, C Brian Schwenke, RG Chance Warmack & RT Jeremiah Poutasi
Defense – DE DaQuan Jones, DT Sammie Hill, DE Jurrell Casey, LOLB Derrick Mordan, ILB Avery Williamson, ILB Zach Brown, ROLB Brian Orakpo, CB Perrish Cox, CB Jason McCourty, SS Da’Norris Searcy & FS Michael Griffin
Team Analysis: The Titans have had an identity crisis since they fired long-time head coach Jeff Fisher. They aren’t quite sure who they want to be. It didn’t help they were without a good quarterback for most of that time. They whiffed on Jake Locker, so that put them back a few years. They hope this year’s #2 overall pick, quarterback Marcus Mariota, turns out to be a home run. He had a lot of success in college and they hope that translates to the NFL. The rest of the offense isn’t quite established either. So, Mariota could have a rough first year. They will most likely finish at the bottom of the AFC South again.
2015 Wins Over/Under Line: 5.5 (Prediction: OVER)
2015 Projected Win/Loss Record: 6-10 (3rd (tied) in AFC South)
