Have Extreme Sports Gone Too Far?

After the untimely death of extreme snowmobile athlete, Caleb Moore, due to complications from an accident suffered during the ESPN 2013 Winter X Games. We must ask ourselves if we have hit the bar where it is no longer physically safe to push the creativity any more.

Moore was one of the best riders and his accident couldn’t be chalked up to inexperience…but did ESPN dodge a bullet?

After news about Moore’s death came out, an ESPN representative said on “Outside the Lines” that all X Games athletes have extensive practice in their field and this is the safest games to date. Yet, before the X Games, extreme motorcycle athlete, Jackson Strong, was on ESPN promoting the fact he had only four hours of practice on a snowmobile. The video below is what happened during Strong’s snowmobile attempt at this year’s X Games. He crashes, throttle gets stuck on his snowmobile, it goes into the crowd and clips a fan. Should we second guess calling this a “sport” if they let anyone just jump on a snowmobile and compete?

NHL Talk: Yakupov’s OT Goal, Jackie Moon & Logan Couture

Two hockey guys talking hockey

It’s hard to have a site called America’s White Boy without covering a sport where most players look like an average person in street clothes.

If this goes well, I may need to start a sister site, Canada’s White Boy. I would need a maple syrup sponsor or a lifetime supply of Tim Horton’s “Timbits”…so it probably won’t happen.

Joe Pasquali and Eddie Theisen are two diehard NHL fans. They both watch every hockey game every night (almost). Neither have a girlfriend. This is their email conversation the following morning. Continue reading

10 Possible Surprise Entrants in the 2013 ‘WWE Royal Rumble’

Every year the WWE puts on the ‘Royal Rumble” pay-per-view with much fanfare. The 30-man battle royal is one of the most popular matches of the year. The winner receives a title match at wrestling’s biggest event, ‘Wrestlemania’. Over the past decade, many old WWE superstars have come back to appear in the event. Kevin Nash, Booker T., Honky Tonk Man and Mick Foley are some of the names who were surprise entrants.

The Rumble match itself has taken a backseat to the return of The Rock. He comes back to face CM Punk for the WWE Championship. It is expected that a few big surprises will happen in their match, since The Rock has already been slated to appear at this year’s ‘Wrestlemania’.

There is speculation who this year’s surprise entries will be. No need to speculate. Here are ten possible surprise entrants in this year’s WWE ‘Royal Rumble’. Continue reading

NBA teams can make trades before NBA Trade Deadline Week? Wait, do the other NBA GMs know this?

The Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers completed a four-person trade that will be written off as a salary dump by Memphis. Cleveland will be applauded for making this trade, since they’re not going anywhere.

Who was involved in th deal?

Will Zach Randolph have to slap Chris Wallace? Continue reading

Sweetbob’s Hipster Music – January 2013

Sweetbob+Hipster+Music1I keep an ear out for new music. I’m used to discovering new bands from my days as a music journalist. Even though this is mostly a sports blog, I still add quite a bit of music and pop culture content.

I received a lot of great feedback from my past hipster music playlists. A lot of emails came in from readers who recommended new tracks to me, which I love. I will keep posting these as long as I keep receiving all the feedback.

I have been called a hipster on more than one occasion. I like indie music more than any other genre of music. Don’t get me wrong, I can rock out to Bon Jovi or Carley Rae Jepsen (depending on the amount of alcohol in my system).

I’ve decided to write a monthly post dedicated to introducing twelve great, new indie songs I’m currently listening to. Most of the songs are fresh and have been released in the second half of 2012, with an exception of one or two that were released towards the middle of 2012.

America’s White Boy: The Podcast?

Hey guys,

I know what you’re thinking…did he just wake up from his New Year’s hangover? Well, sort of.

I’ve been working on launching a podcast. I’ve never worked with audio equipment at this level before, so it has been a learning experience. I’m very thankful my dog is not a parrot. He would have learned so many colorful words.

Before I ask you guys to email BobbyMcRib (at) Gmail or tweet me @Sweetbob, I want to explain what I want to accomplish with the podcast.

The podcast will be a mix between sports and pop culture. I have a lot of friends/acquaintances/colleagues who cover sports or music for a living. I want to share them with the world along with some of the characters I’ve met in my life. I’d feel very selfish if I didn’t share them with the world. The target demographic will be male 18-49, but I don’t want to be overtly chauvinistic. The podcast will be humorous, but I want to keep an option open to interview interesting people, even if the goal is to only inform.

Wait, if I have a bikini model on the podcast, will that help my iTunes podcast algorithm rank? No? Damn.

If you have any ideas, topics, sponsorship inquiries or advice, please shoot me an email or tweet. This podcast idea has been on my mind for a long time. It has taken the success of this blog (and experience gained from writing for print mags and other websites) to give me the confidence to pursue this. The first episode’s release date is TBD, but it will be here sooner than you know.

Speaking of Sooners…Hey, Oklahoma benchwarmers, are you excited for “The America’s White Boy Podcast”?

Calm down, fellas! You’re going to injure your beer pong arm.

‘America’s White Boy’ Introduces "The Nerd Gym"

We are announcing a new section of the site dedicated to health and fitness called, “The Nerd Gym”. We came up with that name because guys (and girls) often get intimidated by going into a gym filled with people in really good shape. This section will be an area where nerdy guys (and girls) can read fitness experiences from us…nerdy guys with average strength and athletic ability.

Everyone needs a few some tips on losing weight, gaining muscle and/or just feeling better. We will explore new products and workout plans to help educate the common man. Continue reading
